The new EP is available on iTunes and I actually spent money on it (gasp!).  It was totally worth it.  Has anybody else heard it/wants to share thoughts?

Is it just me who would anticipate the Yeah Yeah Yeahs being utterly wank playing acoustically, outside of a few songs?

It sounds like an awful idea on paper but Karen O's voice is surprisingly emotional and affecting when she turns down the volume and waxes pensive.

…waxes pensive.

What does this mean? I think I have a vague idea from the times I've heard this term used, and I'm fairly sure I know what 'wax' and 'pensive' mean, but I don't know what this means.

I wouldn't think The Yeah Yeah Yeahs would be good acoustic, but I have a thing for female vocalists so I will check it out when I get home.

i don't know how i feel about this...  i'd suggest putting a song or two on the QC gmail account, but damn itunes and their protected files.  i'd be interested in hearing what more people thought about it before spending money on it, but it intrigues me.

waxing pensive is like waxing one off, only you gotta use the power of your mind instead of pornography.

Quote from: Merriam Webster's

Main Entry: wax
Function: intransitive verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Old English weaxan; akin to Old High German wahsan to increase, Greek auxanein, Latin augEre -- more at EKE
3 : to assume a (specified) characteristic, quality, or state : BECOME

Hence, wax pensive means "become" pensive.  You'll find many "words" in resources called "http://www.m-w.com">dictionaries."

all the cool kids are reading the dictionary.

i think with iTunes songs, if you share it, you can do so i think 6 times? but you need a password. (or you could just burn the thing, put it back onto your computer and then put it on the gmail, because the protection goes away.)

just listening to the clips, cheated hearts and turn into sound really really good and diamond sea is good. gold lion doesn't sound good at all. what she does with her voice in the original doesn't really work well when toned down. it kind of loses it's power.

I'll take "literate" over "cool" any day of the week Smiley

iTunes protect format has an "m4p" extension.  To convert to "mp3" either download an app (there are tons that do just that, many are freeware), or burn to CD and then rip as mp3.  Warning: taking the latter route may result in major deterioration of sound depending on the album.

Better alternative:  never, ever buy something off iTunes.  Ever.  Just don't.

On the subject of YYYs acoustic, if you take the electric guitar away from Nick for Modern Age and give him an acoustic guitar, and keep Karen's vocals exactly the same, voila, you've got a perfectly good acoustic track.  I didn't like those tracks as much as the quasi-punk sound in songs like Tick and Art Rock, but I did enjoy them.  Seeking this sort of variety separates the YYYs from the sort of one album wonder they got pigeonholed as in the hiatus before Show Your Bones and gives them artistic room to devleop into a real, long-term band.  I'm all for it.

I didn't particularly like what I heard.  The thing that I really liked about Show Your Bones was that they really toned down the post-punk noise, but Karen still delivered solid, powerful vocals.  The acoustic EP just sounded anemic to me.

I really want to see them try to pull off an acoustic version of 'Date with the Night'.  Now that would be entertaining.

The sound is thin, but for me that makes it worth listening to.  Nick Zinner is one of my favorite guitarists and listening to someone play a guitar without the fuzz to hide behind really reveals thier idiosyncrasies and technique.  Also, I think that when Karen steps back from the scream, her voice takes on a vulnerable, damaged quality that I find very appealing.  Then again I'm a superfan of this band so a more intimate recording is exactly what I wanted to hear.
