Help with Electronica
«
on:
September 21, 2007, 09:33:46 AM »
A plea for help. I just got teamed up for a slot on our new student radio station. The guy I got seems to know, and makes, pretty rad electronic music. He seems to know his stuff, and I'm a bit of a beginner. I'm loving Ellen Allien, Pantha du Prince, Booka Shade and Boxcutter. I'm scartching the surface of minimal techno/house and dubstep. I also love Daft Punk (who doesn't)
Basically I'm looking for artists/genres that I may not have heard of so this guy doesnt think I'm a total n00b.

Look for "the Fitness", and everybody loves "The sounds". Also "Ima robot" is pretty awesome "the knife" would also be a good place to start. Prettymuch anyone from sweden is awesome. If you are looking for older stuff "kraftwork" was one of the first electro bands

Are you looking to run a show for like...dancing too? Or just awesome electronica?
Because Mouse on Mars is pretty awesome, but I'm not sure if the general dancing populous would enjoy it too much.

You can't go wrong with Air... then there is also Fluke and Syntax (both are the same artist, the different names represent his different styles for the releases). And what Electronica station would be complete without a forray into Aphex Twin ? if you really want to blow their minds, toss in a little Talvin Singh... his songs Butterfly and Light are excellent Tabla-based Electronica (Yes, I said Tabla-based). You'd also be really surprised how well the Blue Man Group translate to radio !
My recommended albums to get are:
Air - Premiers Symptomes
Air - Moon Safari
Fluke - Risotto
Syntax - Meccano Mind
Orbital - In Sides
Orbital - The Alltogether
Underworld - Beaucoup Fish
Underworld - A Hundred Days Off
Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works - Vol II
Blue Man Group - Audio
Blue Man Group - The Complex
Future Sound of London - ISDN (any of them)
Future Sound of London - Accelerator
BT - Movement in Still Life (get the yellow-cover import with the baby on the cover, not the US release, it is put together WAY better)
The Prodigy - Fat of the Land
Album Leaf - In a Safe Place
Sound Tribe Sector 9 - Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace (Do not confuse them with Sound Tribe or Dub Tribe, this is STS9 or Sound Tribe Sector 9)
Banco De Gaia - The Magical Sounds of...
Banco De Gaia - Last Train to Lhasa
Godspeed you Black Emperor - Shalabi Effect
Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough
Telefon Tel Aviv - A Map of What is Effortless
Dirty Vegas - (Self Titled)
Nightmares on Wax - Carboot Soul
Jacknife Lee - Punk Rock High Roller
Gus Gus - Polydistortion
Gus Gus - Vs. T-World
Crystal Method - Legion of Boom
Crystal Method - Tweekend
Talvin Singh - OK
And this is all just off the top of my head, give me a more specific idea of what you are looking for and I can make more targeted suggestions.

I'll refine your suggestion down to "The Understanding". "Melody AM" is a great album, but I think "The Understanding" is more dance-friendly.

This is meant to be Shalabi Effect's Self Titled album.

There is gold in this here thread. Additional bands that no one has mentioned in this thread that deserve praise and attention:
Brazilian Girls esp. Self Titled
De-Phazz esp. Death By Chocolate
Gotan Project esp. La Revancha Del Tango
Mr. Scruff esp. Trouser Jazz
Orbital esp. The Blue Album
Thievery Corporation esp. The Mirror Conspiracy
And guys, I really like how Daft Punk rate a mention but The Chemical Bros. and Fatboy Slim are like some dark secret that we can't admit to liking. Get it out there. Don't be ashamed. You liked Block Rockin' Beats. You liked Weapon of Choice. It's OK if they appeared in a few commercials. Now Juno Reactor and Moby on the other hand . . . that's different.

this said, you didn't leave any indication you'd read through the thread at all, so it was easy to me to assume you'd forgotten your manners and not bothered. we're cool!

As already mentioned, anything by Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin and psuedonyms.
Also, off the top of my head:
Venetian Snares (IDMy/glitchy)
prefuse73 (IDMish)
Tipper (IDMy type stuff)
Aaron Spectre (Dubstep)
Drumcorps (Breakcore/IDM)
Monkfly
Hermitude (Instrumental hip-hop/jazzy electronica)
Unkle Ho (as above)
Mark Pritchard (IDM/dubstep)
Mala (Dubstep- Digital Mysticz!)
Benga (dubstep)
Sub Bass Snarl (Awesome)
Gauche (Electronic + real instruments)
DJ Krush (Downtempo/hip-hop stuff...)
DJ Scotch Egg (8-bit breakcore with obscenities yelled through a megaphone)
The Presets (Electroclash?)
Anything from 8-bit peoples
for 8-bit electronica, particularly Role Model, Random, Covox, and Lo-bat. Everything in the discography section is under the creative commons licensing, so you're allowed to download and play it.
If you want some linkage to dubstep mixes, let me know.
Edit: Oh yeah. I completely left out Industrial, Drum and Bass, Dub, Ragga/Dancehall etc. but I can reccomend some if you'd like. Didn't really seem like the type of music you were going for.

Links to dubstep remixes would be great. I know it's fairly 'trendy' to be into dubstep at the moment, but honestly, some of it is absolutely kickin! I've only really listened to stuff by Skream, Burial and Kode9 so will be checking out some of the other folk you mentioned!

Aaron Spectre is more towards breakcore than dubstep - the A-side off Amen, Punk (around 7mins to 10mins on the Life We Promote mix) is
intense.
Check out people's websites, a lot of them will have mixes up. Also, I'm recommending Herv. Breakcore mixed with Gameboy noises. Savage. Also Kid606. The music that turned my mates from metallers into electronic bunnies.

I saw him play two (?) months ago, he was just playing the heavy, dark dubstep, no breakcore in sight. Er, earshot. So he mixes it up a bit, I guess. And kid606 is fucking rad.

With cake ownership set to C and cake consumption set to K, then C + K = 0. So indeed as one consumes a cake, one simultaneously deprives oneself of cake ownership.

www.barefiles.com/
is your friend for dubstep mixes, there are plenty of good ones up on there. I also recommend checking out the Dubstep Allstars compilations, they're generally pretty great mixes. In fact, I'll throw Vol.02 up on the sendspace thread in a minute, it has Goat Stare by Loefah on it, possibly my favourite ever dubstep track.
Also, everyone should listen to
Scotch Egg
. Everyone needs DJ Scotch Egg in their mind. I love that man.
Dubstep Allstars Vol.02 and Vol.05 are now up in the sendspace thread.

Yes! I mentioned Scotch Egg, too, but it bares repeating. Ideally, repeating very loudly through a shit megaphone. I might put KFC Core up in the sendspace thread when I get home.

I noticed, which is what prompted me to write his name in big letters. There's no such thing as too much DJ Scotch Egg, the man is pure party. You should definitely upload KFC Core, as it may prompt people to go see him live which will spread the ridiculous dancing and fucked up Bon Jovi appreciation. I'd do the same for Scotch Hausen, but I have no means to rip from vinyl.

AUUUUUGH
I just started looking at that out of curiosity, with the intent of starting at the beginning and working outwards and I got stuck on fucking French Pop and basically am downloading everything I can find by Jean Jacques Perrey on dialup speeds.
AUUUUUUUUUGH.
I have a horrifying feeling this is going to end in a few months from now with me the spitting imagine of Mike from Diesel Sweeties.
