It is loved and hated for its “oddness” and “obscurity.” Its chances in the marketplace were martyred by its spotty availability, and Thompson has admitted to feeling wounded by the trashing it received. Attaining saintly lost-classic status won it a place in the hearts of many music geeks, but their esteem may have done further disservice to the album, as they tend to celebrate how “weird” it is, which preserves its rarification since, I imagine, a throng of potential listeners won’t spin it, fearing that they lack the patience to withstand its eccentricity. My head is full of storied albums, but Corky’s Debt to His Father is the only record I can think of that got so unjustly exiled by both its detractors and its celebrants.

I got 5 more albums for you all to enjoy.  I know some were posted but that was awhile ago and they should be reposted.  And I recommend that you blast the Bad Brains at a very very very loud volume.

Gang Of Four - Entertainment

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?kihrynyncxm
Quote
Entertainment! is one of those records where germs of influence can be traced through many genres and countless bands, both favorably and unfavorably. From groups whose awareness of genealogy spreads wide enough to openly acknowledge Gang of Four's influence (Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine), to those not in touch with their ancestry enough to realize it (rap-metal, some indie rock) -- all have appropriated elements of their forefathers' trailblazing contribution. Its vaguely funky rhythmic twitch, its pungent, pointillistic guitar stoccados, and its spoken/shouted vocals have all been picked up by many. Lyrically, the album was apart from many of the day, and it still is. The band rants at revisionist history in "Not Great Men" ("No weak men in the books at home"), self-serving media and politicians in "I Found That Essence Rare" ("The last thing they'll ever do?/Act in your interest"), and sexual politics in "Damaged Goods" ("You said you're cheap but you're too much"). Though the brilliance of the record thrives on the faster material -- especially the febrile first side -- a true highlight amongst highlights is the closing "Anthrax," full of barely controlled feedback squalls and moans. It's nearly psychedelic, something post-punk and new wave were never known for. With a slight death rattle and plodding bass rumble, Jon King equates love with disease and admits to feeling "like a beetle on its back." In the background, Andy Gill speaks in monotone of why Gang of Four doesn't do love songs. Subversive records of any ilk don't get any stronger, influential, or exciting than this.

Fuck. Yes. I'm so glad you uploaded this. I wish I still had their greatest hits with 2nd disc of remixes by other bands. It was so damn cool.

Anyway heres this,

Ravi Shankar - At the Woodstock Festival

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/download.php?4x9dnimvmti

For those who've never heard of him, he taught George Harrison to play the Sitar and is also the father of Nora Jones. But that aside, he's hella awesome on the Sitar. As the title implies this is from the original Woodstock, and I can't stress enough how great this is. Just download it, you'll be happy about it.

His nephew Ananda Shankar is also pretty cool, but more electronic. Though I don't have any of his music.

The Parable of Arable Land (1967) is the first album by the Red Krayola, then known as the Red Crayola. The album is self-described as a “Free Form Freak-Out,” and remains one of the most infamous in their catalogue. A “Free Form Freak-Out” segues each of the actual songs, often resurfacing again elsewhere within the songs. The songs introduce mainstay Mayo Thompson’s signature style of abstract lyrics wed to minimalist (and often avant-garde) melodies and rhythms. The album is also notable for instrumental cameos by label mate and 13th Floor Elevators frontman Roky Erickson.

CAT POWER AND MOGWAI HAD A BABY; THEY NAMED HER "DIXIE DIRT"

These are some dear friends of mine - I've known the singer/guitarist for around 10 years, even - who put out one of the best, most sad albums I know of.  Combining whisky-drunk cracked vocals courtesy of Kat Brock and long instrumental segments.  Track 3, "Bad Lights", is pretty close to the most perfect song I have ever heard in my life.  Download this or I will cut you.

I almost didn't upload it because my CD is fucked up and the last track, the 10-minute "Appetite", won't rip, but I decided to anyway because then maybe you would have incentive to at least buy that one track from Last.fm (but you should really buy the whole album if you like it, and their newer one, too; you can get it on Amazon).

they are on kill rock stars. sounds like somewhere between velvet underground and electrelane. the name of the album kinda hits it on the head, quite soft, psychedelic.

those are the first two albums they have two more if people give good feedback i will post the rest. i recommend starting with rock it to the moon more on the instrumental side lots of organ post rock/psychedelic heavy builds quickening pace, a simple drummer whose time changing fills are excellent. The Samuel Jackson Five - Easily Misunderstood

From Wikipedia : "The Samuel Jackson Five (or SJ5) is a four-piece band from Norway, which started out as a "failed drum'n'bass-project"[1], but later switched to playing Post-rock music with distinctive jazz influences. They describe their sound as ethereal, experimental, improvised, dynamic music." This is their second of two albums. I haven't been able to find the first yet. Supposedly going to come out with another album Fall '08. I highly suggest them, they make me very happy.

The Black Lips have a reputation for crazy live shows that have included vomiting, urinating, nudity, band members kissing, fireworks, and a chicken. They have slowly built a fanbase that appreciates their energy and style that is a rough mishmash of blues, rock, doo-wop, country, and punk.

The Sword - Age of Winters

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/download.php?mtvyy2h5mcy

from allmusic
Quote
ot to be confused with the Canadian heavy metal band from the late '80s, named simply Sword, the Sword is a retro-metal four-piece hailing from -- of all places -- the singer/songwriter oasis of Austin, TX. First conceived in 2003, the Sword really hit their stride about a year later, when founding vocalist and guitarist J.D. Cronise joined forces with guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie, and drummer Trivett Wingo, and made a much raved-over appearance at Austin's famed SXSW festival.National touring stints with everyone from Clutch to indie rock darlings ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead followed, and by mid-2005 the Sword had been picked up by New York-based indie label Kemado Records, with their much-anticipated debut album, Age of Winters, appearing early the next year. Before completing their second album, they released an EP titled Amplified Heat in 2006 and contributed two songs (one original and one Led Zeppelin cover) to a split 12" EP with Swedish heavy rockers Witchcraft in November 2007. Gods of the Earth arrived in spring 2008.

Red Sparowes - Every Red Heart Shines Toward The Red Sun.

Code:

from allmusic:
Quote
Red Sparowes play a form of intensified, experimental post-rock with a notable use of pedal steel guitar. The Los Angeles act formed in 2003 and features current and former members of other bands: guitarist Bryant Clifford Meyer (Isis), guitarist Josh Graham (visuals for Neurosis), bassist Greg Burns (Halifax Pier), bassist/guitarist Andy Arahood (Angel Hair), and drummer David Clifford (Pleasure Forever).

Apocalyptica - When Worlds Collide

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/download.php?n4qmftwngtx

from allmusic
Quote
The Helsinki, Finland, quartet Apocalyptica comprised classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Max Lilja, Antero Manninen, and Paavo Lotjonen; formed in 1993, the group made waves internationally in 1996 with Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, which combined their formal background with their love of heavy metal. The album found favor with both classical buffs and metal heads alike, and two years later Apocalyptica resurfaced with Inquisition Symphony, which featured covers of material by Faith No More and Pantera. They added double bass and percussion to the mix for 2001's Cult, a collection of all-original material, and again on 2003's Reflections. 2005 saw the release of the eponymous Apocalyptica, followed in 2006 by the collection Amplified: Decade of Reinventing the Cello. The band returned to the studio the following year for Worlds Collide.

Thee More Shallows - A history of sport fishing

Code:

Quote from: AMG
Thee More Shallows' debut, 2002's A History of Sport Fishing, is a subdued affair, focused on precise arrangements and emotive songwriting rather than the studio-as-instrument bombast of their incredible 2005 follow-up, More Deep Cuts, which became the model for their subsequent releases. They hadn't yet delved into the lo-fi but huge-sounding dynamics that make Cuts such a unique and powerful album. But the tension, paranoia, and despair that characterize the Shallows' modus operandi are readily present, perhaps in their formative stages, even if you have to read between the lines to see them (as in the barely restrained anguish of "The 8th Ring of Hell"). Gentle melodies, hypnotic rhythms, deliberate pacing, and whispered/mumbled vocals create an atmosphere of ennui that's constantly teetering between hopelessness and resignation (as in "The Perfect Map" and the title track). The arrangements have a post-rock feel -- and there are a number of instrumentals included -- but the simple, clean, and often chiming guitar lines, accented by a muted rhythm section and touches of keys, strings, and samples, result in perfect angst-pop confections (as in "The Ballad of Douglas Chin" and "I Do So Have a Sense of Humor"). It's the unstrained subtlety and understatement of the songs collected here that make A History of Sport Fishing such a rewarding listening experience and set the stage for the albums to come.

Thee More Shallows - More Deep Cuts

Quote from:  Tiny Mix Tapes
This album is good. Really damn good. Thee More Shallow’s Dee Kesler spent nearly three years in the studio with More Deep Cuts before finding it ready for the masses. What we have been presented is a nearly flawless release, which remains faithful to the luminous roots of rock and roll while brilliantly expanding into other arenas in the spectrum of music.

Theirs is a wide reaching sound on More Deep Cuts. While Kesler’s vocals are immaculately clear, clean, and fit to be supported by a happy-go-lucky sound, TMS have decided to present their music tucked away behind the shadows, off in a corner of the room. From the weeping strings of "Int #1" (a la Godspeed You! Black Emperor), to the ominous surroundings of "Cloisterphobia," Kesler awkwardly fits the gloomy sound with his innocently maudlin presentation, introspective tales, and insightful descriptions. And the music is just so damn impressive.

Despite throwing in orchestral aspects, piano, bells, samples, keyboards, horns, drums, and guitars, More Deep Cuts has somehow managed to keep things simple and straightforward. While each individual track has its own unique sound — the languorous aspiration of "Walk of Shame," the beat driven rumble of "Freshman Thesis" — they all flow seamlessly together. The sequencing and spacing have made this an actual album rather than a collection of songs. The time Kesler and Thee More Shallows have spent with More Deep Cuts is apparent on the album. From the layering to the fine-tuning to the tweaking and the clarity, the production, mixing, and mastering are what make this record standout as one of the most original and best releases of 2005.

Thee More Shallows - Monkey vs Shark EP

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/download.php?ymztjlzzndz

Quote from: Tiny Mix Tapes
Looking at the cover art of this EP, one sees an illustration of a rambunctious monkey and shark in a bedroom setting. What does it all mean? Is it a pictorial allegory where the monkey represents evolution and the shark religion (Jesus fish)? Is it a visual description of the struggle between the sexes—the monkey, male; the shark, female? Masculinity emphasized by such statements as "monkeying around," "monkey wrench," and the monkey armpit scratch; femininity by the sniffing out of lifeblood, water birth (the womb tank), and that smooth, sexy, and sleek dorsal fin? The gender war has been well documented:

Mick Jagger: "I’m a flea-bit peanut monkey...I’m a monkey man!" ("Monkey Man", 1969)

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: "Sharks, they’re state of the art/ They’re top of the heap/ The T-Rex of the deep." ("Sharks", 2002)

T. Rex: "The sea beasts scull the waters." ("The Sea Beasts", 1969)

Then there was the following attempt made by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart at pacifying the situation, though ignored by the music industry:

The Monkees: "Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees/ People say we monkey around/ But we’re too busy singing to put anybody down." ("(Theme From) The Monkees", 1966)

And then there is the feather the monkey wields in the illustration. Is it for tickling—torture? Does it belong to Yankee Doodle? Has it been plucked from the plume of a peacock? The music on the EP is just as cryptic as the cover art. Thee More Shallows combine mature gadget noises with flimsy toy sounds. The band is playful, but deadly serious. As Buck 65 once said: "I like human contact, but I don’t like to play-fight." This animalistic bedroom romp is more than just touching and teasing—it’s a battle.

Dee Kesler, Chavo Fraser, and Jason Gonzales are clearly referring to an intimate struggle, as the lyrics of the title track indicate: "On creepy sheets in the dark / I was the monkey and you were the shark." The drone, percussive erraticism, eroticism, and siren squeals of the opening number even need the following track, "Int 3," to peter out completely. Peter, being a male, obviously.

The band’s spooky rendition of Al Green’s "I Can’t Get Next To You" is startling. Clear and coherent lyrics over the band’s occult music leave the listener numb with gummy flesh. Odd Nosdam and Yoni Wolf stop in to help their fellow San Franciscan performers with crunch and crunk production and lighthearted harmonies. From start to finish, the shark circles and the monkey swings. All that’s left in the bedroom is shark teeth and ape shit.

I got all homesick for Austin today, and decided to up some of my favorite under-appreciated Austin/Denton bands

Astroblast - This Will Help You On Your Way

They're essentially a perfect mix of twee and shoegaze.  Tweegaze if you will.

Ed Hall - Motherscratcher

Quote
Motherscratcher was the most focused, least whimsical Ed Hall album issued during the trio's career -- certainly more so than Albert and Love Poke Here -- and it was the first in which Gary Chester's exceptional Paul Leary meets Robert Fripp guitar playing truly sang out. Furthermore, the bottom end, provided by Will Shatter-esque bass player Larry Strub is the perfect architectural framework around which Chester's prickly riffs and trebly, note-driven leads can jab and dance. The opening "White House Girls," with its exaggerated backbeat, and laughing chorus, is a near-perfect example of this. Texturally, Ed Hall, with this album, was beginning to resemble a more cryptic and nuanced, less abrasive version of Flipper, one of the trio's most salient influences. What also distinguishes Motherscratcher from previous Ed Hall efforts is it's more rock-oriented rhythms, perhaps owing to new drummer Lyman Hardy; either way, the approach is more serious, straightforward, and memorable. It is with this album that Ed Hall fully found their voice, even if they had but one album left. "Satori in Manhattan, Kansas" is a strikingly beautiful instrumental, one eclipsed by very little in rock music. Ed Hall's finest album.

tl;dr They love the Butthole Surfers.

Transona Five - Melatonin Bullet EP

Sad, slow, and shoegazey.

(If you are picky about this sort of thing, the folder is named wrong because I got the name of the album wrong when i first ripped it.)

Paul Newman - Only Love Can Break Your Heart

Quote
Much like Frames Per Second, Only Love Can Break Your Heart tends to borrow a bit more from Tortoise's self-titled debut than one might wish. Fortunately, Only Love comes across as the more original of the two, if only because it contains a healthy Slint influence. Whether derivative or not, the results are appealing listening -- the record's shifting dynamics, rhythmic changes, ringing melodies, and solid composition are all lovely enough to keep listeners from caring about the (arguable) pointlessness of the band's sound.

Monroe Mustang - Plain Sweeping Themes For The Unprepared

Quote
Some four years in the making, Monroe Mustang's full-length debut was worth the wait -- the group possesses a finely-honed melodic sensibility put to excellent use on lo-fi pop gems like "Vinyl," "The Elephant Sound" and "We Aren't the Stars."

I know its been mentioned and discussed on these forums about ten quadrillion times, but for those who don't have it, here it is.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?gkmxdswat2y

Quote
By refining the song-oriented breakthroughs of Sister and developing their fascination with noise and alternate tunings, Sonic Youth created a masterpiece of post-punk art rock with the double-album Daydream Nation. Though the self-conscious sprawl of the album might appear self-indulgent on the surface, Daydream Nation is powered by a sustained vision, one that encapsulates all of the group's quirks and strengths. Alternating between tense, hypnotic instrumental passages and furious noise explosions, the music demonstrates a range of emotions and textures, and in many ways, it's hard not to listen to the record as one long piece of shifting dynamics. But the songs themselves are remarkable, from the anti-anthem of "Teen Age Riot" and the punky "Silver Rocket" to the hazy drug dreams of "Providence" and the rolling waves of "Eric's Trip." Daydream Nation demonstrates the extent to which noise and self-conscious avant art can be incorporated into rock, and the results are nothing short of stunning.
I'm in love with a lot of the contributions here. My library has at least doubled in size.

Right Away Great Captain!- The Bitter End LP

Quote
The Bitter End is the first release from Andy Hull's solo project, Right Away, Great Captain. The album was recorded in 3 days near Bastian, VA in August of 2006. It is a concept record focusing on a 1600's sailor at sea for 3 years. Each song being a journal entry to his family at home or his captain.

Andy Hull is quite possibly one of the best new songwriters in the past few years. Sure, he's not going to make Rolling Stone as the next Bright Eyes or Dylan, and Pitchfork would probably write him off quicker than they would eat up the new Of Montreal album. Hull is as quiet as Sam Beam and possibly as metaphoric while possessing the simplicity of his friends and peers Jesse Lacey and Kevin Devine. With his main project, Manchester Orchestra, most can tell how Hull and Co. take simple song structures and make it into something big and something real. Right Away, Great Captain! is not going to be Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea or The Microphones's The Glow Pt.2, but the raw underlining is present.

This album is some really awesome lo-fi indie minstrelsy from the frontman of Manchester Orchestra.

Quoting this from the top of the last page because the thread's moving so fast now - I really, really enjoyed this. Thank you for the upload and highly recommended to others.
