the screwtapes i've been trying to upload are all over MF's 100 MB limit, so i compiled a best-of playlist to bring you guys some southern flavor. the tracks are mostly from 11-12-00 Disc 3 and 3 N Tha Mornin, the two strongest mixes in my opinion. All of these songs are excellent.
if you like heavy low-end in your music, if you enjoy hip-hop, if you enjoy southern hip-hop, you need to listen to these seminal tracks from a true originator, DJ Screw.

Not sure whether or not you've already considered this, but you could use Megaupload or even Rapidshare if you want to upload slightly larger files. mediaf!re's limit, for all of the website's advantages, is, comparatively, extremely small.

Put it in two zip/rar files if need be. Easiest solution.

Rules:
No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at
http://imageshack.us
.
Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.
Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to mediaf!re.com, in multiple parts if the album is over 100mbs. The reason for this is that we know mediaf!re is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.
Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.
Also, please do NOT request albums. This includes requests for re-uploads; if you miss it, try looking for it somewhere else.
Repost the rules at the top of each new page.

for some reason everywhere i tried uploading it was boned! i think it's an issue with my computer. anyways i think making a best-of playlist was a better end result because it covers a broader scope than any of the actual releases.

Oceans - Nothing Collapses
Mostly instrumental post-rock from Chicago. Imagine if Explosions in the Sky or Kinski took a chill pill. A thoroughly pleasing listen and an impressive debut.

You have to zip the files into a folder using Winzip or another archiving program. Then just upload that.

dude just use megaupload if you got a big file i mean it doesn't virus up your computer like sendspace does. the only thing is is that you can't download files in rapid succession, but that shouldn't be a problem if all the normal stuff is mediaf!re.

Problem is that I only get around 30-40kbps on Rapidshare and around 200-25okbps on mediaf!re. The fact that it allows multiple dl channels is a big help to people who don't have and don't want Rapidshare premium accounts.

Megaupload is the same as rapidshare and most of the others. Single download thread, no resume, Australians get shafted by the speed.

I have a funny story, does anyone want to hear a funny story? No? Well, tough.
I kept searching for Grizzly Bear's Yellow House, Grizzly Bear's Yellow House, Grizzly Bear's Yellow House, but my internet wouldn't let me. I gave up, and decided to start searching for the next artist to come to mind - Tom Waits. What is one of the first results to pop up when I search for Waits?
Grizzly Bear's Yellow House.
I fucking love this thread.

Grizzly Bear's Yellow House.
When you're searching for something, drop the "'s" and just type "Grizzly Bear Yellow House" instead. First result: Grizzly Bear - Yellow House.

Mt.St.Helens Vietnam Band - S/T

While I could care less about most PR releases telling me about the next great band for fans of Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Wilco, & The Beatles, every now and then, a story makes me want to hear the album right away. Such was the case with Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, whos name I had heard a couple times, and with a name like that, you kinda remember it quickly. So when I got hold of the full length album recently, I paid attention. And I am really glad I did, because this is quickly becoming one of my favorite new albums this year. its not ground breaking, but as far as indie rock goes, it hits the sweet spot. With some great guitar work and pleading vocals, there is no reason that these guys won’t be a blog darling before long.

Most of my stuff is more leaning towards classic rock or folk, as well as some jazz, not really indie stuff. Here's what I can offer if someone really wants:
Jazz:
Bill Frissell - Blues Dream
Holly Cole - It Happened One Night
Melva Houston and Band - Black Coffee
Thelonious Monk Quartet - Misterioso
Folk:
Alice Gomez - Obsidian Butterfly (Aztec Folk)
Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek - The Story of Süleyman Soundtrack (Turkish folk, really good instrumental album)
Arlo Guthrie - Alice's Restaurant
Carole Edwards - Songs Demo (A friend of mine, only five songs, but four of them are crazy good)
Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman
The Corrs - Home
Bringing it All Back Home (Assorted bands doing Irish folk music)
Emmylou Harris - Portraits (Three Disc Best of)
Penny Whiskey - Half-Corked (Local band, mix of covers and originals, very good music)
Safka - About You
Tom House - All of his albums
The Chieftains - The Best of the Claddagh Years and the Best of the Chieftains
Narada World - Celtic Dance (Extremely, extremely good instrumental Celtic music. One of my favourite albums)
Country:
Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
Billy Joe Shaver - The Best of; Tramp on Your Street
Alison Krauss and Union Station - Lonely Runs Both Ways
The Highwaymen - The Road Goes on Forever
Blues:
Not too much here - mostly more common stuff, though I do have one best of Robert Johnson if anyone wants it.
Metal:
Again, mostly common stuff. I have a "Metal Zelda" album in which someone does covers of different themes in the Zelda games, only more metal.
Rock:
Allan Holdsworth - The Sixteen Men of Tain (Special Edition) [Prog-Rock]
Ashley McIsaac - hi™ how are you today? [Celtic-Rock]
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - The Return of the Manticore (Disc one and two) [Prog-Rock]
Focus - Hocus Pocus: The Best of Focus [Prog-Rock]
Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow; 2400 Fulton Street (The best of) [Psychedelia]
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (Sadly, most of my Tull is on record) [Prog-rock]
The Moody Blues - Voices in the Sky; Time Traveller (Discs 1-4) [Symphonic-rock; prog-rock; psychedelia; world influence]
The Rolling Stones - Welcome to the Jungle! (Live Bootleg)
Traffic - Smiling Phases (Disc One and Two) [Psychedelia; prog-rock; jazz-rock]
Melanie Safka albums:
Acoustic Blue
Crazy Love
Freedom Knows My Name
Live at Carnegie Hall
Her Best of
Old Bitch Warrior
Photograph (Double Exposure)
Precious Cargo
Live @ Borders
Ring the Living Bell
Long post is long, but these are some of the lesser-known albums I have just in case anyone wants me to up them.

There doesn't seem to be any Gentle Giant in this thread yet. I will correct that.
Gentle Giant - Octopus
Octopus is my favorite GG album and they never received any real attention in North America (with the exception of In A Glass House, which I can upload if people like this one.). Like most of their work it features more instruments then I can name and hints of renaissance sound. Standouts on this album are Knots and The Advent of Panurge. Knots is a must listen with its A Capella singing and overall jarring and twisting nature.
All Music Review
Quote
Gentle Giant often seemed more notable for its album art than its music. Octopus, however, marries the two seamlessly, with the cover speaking for itself, of course. And the mood continues within, the deliciously convoluted opening "The Advent of Panurge" itself riding waves of sonic tentacles as Derek Shulman's guitar shrieks short but so effective bursts around the thundering bass and, occasionally, churchy organ. Against the pulsating volume of the album's heavier tracks -- "Panurge" is joined by "A Cry for Everyone" -- the band's excursions into less excitable territory are never less than captivating. Twiddly though they are, the sometimes a cappella "Knots," the lilting "Dog's Life," and the Yes-with-fiddles-ish "Raconteur Troubadour" all have moments of sublime sweetness, while the instrumental "The Boys in the Band" is a succession of quirky showcases for, indeed, all the boys.

Julie Ocean - Long Gone And Nearly There.

This album makes me so happy, really it just has a fun enviroment and a lot of appeal. It's quick, upbeat, and has a summer feel to it.
Althought I think a lot of the reviews are a bit harsh, feel free to read them.
Quote
Taking their name from the nostalgic title of the classic 1981 single of the Undertones, Julie Ocean is almost reminiscent of The Ramones. Refreshingly up tempo, almost giddy, the lyrics are entertaining with bebop harmonizing in a retro sounding way. Mostly clean guitar with just a hint of distortion sprinkled in here and there, the only indication which points to Jim Spellman’s Velocity Girl roots. This album is mostly melodic two part harmonies, a little bit bubble gum and a whole lot of power pop.
“Long Gone and Nearly There” is a quick twenty five minutes of vintage ‘50s sounds with a ‘90s power pop flair. Upbeat and catchy, these tunes seem perfect for a beach party, frat party or a dance party. Julie Ocean’s catchy music, almost simplistically charming, moves along well, in a breathless, fast paced, Beach Boys sounding way from “Ten Lonely Words” to “At the Appointed Hour” to “Here Comes Danny” to the final cut, “Looking at Me/Looking At You.”
Julie Ocean's first album is a lot of fun to listen to with all light hearted power pop tunes that bounce along. Lots of do-wops and big round ahs done in a way that is refreshing, enjoyable and just in time for light hearted summer events when there are not enough minutes in the day to enjoy the things and people we love.

You pricks better appreciate that I even if you don't like this music, I'm pretty much operating on a 26k modem and don't get high speed until 3 AM
The following is Melanie's "Photograph" album, originally released in 1976 and almost immediately taken off the shelves. It was re-released a few years ago in some little European country with an extra CD of bonus tracks - the first CD feels like a solid album (with the exception of the last song), and the second just feels like an assorted bunch of songs stuck on a mixtape.
Because my connection decides to
fucking crash every thirty minutes
or so, the most I can manage is the first half (but it's still damn good).

My best friend in high school was really into Melanie. He found this album on vinyl at a flea market for like 2 bucks and was obsessed with it for an entire summer.

Your friend has good taste - it's rare to find other Melanie fans. It's a great album. I listened to it last night (after being away from it for awhile) and I, personally, gave most of the songs five stars on the first disc (and the rest got four). I really like the star ratings in iTunes.
My father's a huge Melanie fan, and I get a lot of my stuff through him - including the time we met her. Her son is one of the best damn guitarists out there, and I'm tempted to upload an album of hers from 2002 that has him on it, even if her voice (and the songs) aren't like they used to be. But who really wants a constant, stagnant force in music? I really like the change, personally.

Welp, that sucks. Oh well, as long as there's a working link available now, I'm happy. This album is pretty much my favorite thing ever right now.

Yeah, that album is pretty rad.
Does this mean they will be touring soonish? As in, not the US? I hope so.

I hadn't downloaded anything from this thread in a while but I'm really excited to listen to the new Black Moth Super Rainbow and Dirty Projectors. Here's some jazz.
Charlie Haden, Geri Allen and Paul Motian -
Etudes
Quote
The very democratic trio of bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Paul Motian and pianist Geri Allen perform sensitive yet often exploratory group improvisations on several originals, Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman," and Herbie Nichols' "Shuffle Montgomery." The communication between these three masterful players is quite impressive.

McCoy Tyner -
Echoes of a Friend
Quote
An obvious classic, this piano solo record (reissued on CD in the OJC series) features McCoy Tyner paying tribute to John Coltrane. Tyner not only plays three of Coltrane's songs ("Naima," "Promise," and "My Favorite Things") but two of his originals (a lengthy "The Discovery" and "Folks") which display how much the pianist had grown since leaving the saxophonist's group in late 1965. Few McCoy Tyner records are not easily recommended but this one even ranks above most.

Lee Morgan -
The Sidewinder
Quote
Carried by its almost impossibly infectious eponymous opening track, The Sidewinder helped foreshadow the sounds of boogaloo and soul-jazz with its healthy R&B influence and Latin tinge. While the rest of the album retreats to a more conventional hard bop sound, Morgan's compositions are forward-thinking and universally solid. Joe Henderson makes a major contribution to the album, especially on "Totem Pole," where his solos showed off his singular style, threatening to upstage Morgan, who is also fairly impressive here. Barry Harris, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins are all in good form throughout the album as well, and the group works together seamlessly to create an album that crackles with energy while maintaining a stylish flow.

Stan Getz and João Gilberto -
Getz/Gilberto
Quote
One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova's finest moment, Getz/Gilberto brought guitarist/singer João Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. Getz/Gilberto made bossa nova a permanent part of the jazz landscape not just with its unassailable beauty, but with one of the biggest smash hit singles in jazz history — "The Girl From Ipanema," a Jobim classic sung by João's wife, Astrud Gilberto, who had never performed outside of her own home prior to the recording session. Beyond that, most of the Jobim songs recorded here also became standards of the genre — "Corcovado" (which featured another vocal by Astrud), "So Danço Samba," "O Grande Amor," a new version of "Desafinado." With such uniformly brilliant material, it's no wonder the album was such a success but, even apart from that, the musicians all play with an effortless grace that's arguably the fullest expression of bossa nova's dreamy romanticism ever brought to American listeners. Getz himself has never been more lyrical, and Gilberto and Jobim pull off the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of the songs with a warm, relaxed charm. This music has nearly universal appeal; it's one of those rare jazz records about which the purist elite and the buying public are in total agreement. Beyond essential.

Freddie Hubbard -
Open Sesame
Quote
Freddie Hubbard's first recording as a leader, Open Sesame features the 22-year-old trumpeter in a quintet with tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks, the up-and-coming pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Clifford Jarvis. This set shows that even at this early stage, Hubbard had the potential to be one of the greats. On the ballad "But Beautiful" he shows maturity; other highlights include "Open Sesame" and a driving "All or Nothing at All."

I was looking into Mclusky reviews for Difference (which, incidentally, I really didn't care for), and one was something like: "This album is like a bag of rocks. Except the bag is sharp, and the rocks are lava. Moving lava with fast teeth."
So, no, not everyone can write a good review.
