So this is the new *super mysterious* Burial & Four Tet 12" that the internets are all in a frenzy about, though after listening I can understand why. Apparently both tracks (there's only two) are collabarations from the two artists so if you've heard , and enjoyed, either of them I'd say check it out.

This is the most piss-boring release i've heard in the last 10 years. Frankly, i'd expect this kind of humdrum crap from Four Tet, but Burial's clearly lost it.

Belonging

On Keith Jarrett's first recording with his "European" quartet — Jan Garbarek (sax), Palle Danielsson (bass), Jon Christiensen (drums) — he stakes out somewhat less abrasive territory than that which his "American" foursome was exploring at this time. Garbarek sports a neutral, vibratoless tone that occasionally reaches an emotional climax; the rhythm section is supportive and just loose enough. The record operates at its strongest level when Jarrett locks the quartet into his winning gospel mode on "'Long as You Know You're Living Yours" and the tense drive of "Spiral Dance"; the reflective numbers are less compelling. Still, this LP-turned-CD successfully bucked the powerful electric trends of its time and holds up well today.

The Köln Concert

With all the tedium surrounding jazz-rock fusion, the complete absence on these shores of neo-trad anything, and the hopelessly angry gyrations of the avant-garde, Jarrett brought quiet and lyricism to revolutionary improvisation. All of the gestures, intricate droning harmonies, skittering and shimmering melodic lines, and whoops and sighs from the man are spontaneous. But from the moment Jarrett blushes his opening chords and begins meditating on harmonic invention, melodic figure construction, glissando combinations, and occasional ostinato phrasing, music changed. This may have been the album every stoner wanted in his collection "because the chicks dug it." Yet it speaks volumes about a musician and a music that opened up the world of jazz to so many who had been excluded, and offered the possibility -- if only briefly -- of a cultural, aesthetic optimism, no matter how brief that interval actually was. This is a true and lasting masterpiece of melodic, spontaneous composition and improvisation that set the standard.

The Survivors' Suite

Survivor's Suite opens with Jarrett's aching, breathy sigh on the bass recorder, evoking the sound of a horn somewhere across a great expanse of fog. Percussion soon punctuates the melodic line to give the opening a more spiritual, ritualistic feel, which is only the first of many mutations that this album will go through. Divided into two parts, entitled "Beginning" and "Conclusion," this suite effortlessly flows between its movements which range from fiery free jazz to open, meditative atmospheric pieces showing heavy input from indigenous musics to instrumental solos that owe a sylistic debt to the music of the previous decade. Jarrett has strong solos in both the first and second track, but his performances rise to the surface frequently to add warmth to the suite. The greatest contribution that he makes on this album, however, is as a composer, as its complex components seem to nestle together seamlessly again and again, even if the solos occasionally rapidly expand and contract with kinetic energy. As strong a hand as Jarrett has in this album, however, he definitely owes a debt to his supporting players, especially the passionate Dewey Redman and skilled Paul Motian, but Charlie Haden plays an important role in the execution of the suite as well, even if only to provide a skeleton to hang the more fluid elements on. Like other albums of its time, this was beginning to show the brightness, lightness, and soft edges of contemporary jazz, but the solidness of Haden's bass helps keep it rooted and earthbound.

Standards

In January of 1983, Keith Jarrett returned to the trio format and his collaboration with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette resulted in three albums. The first release finds the trio digging into standards, including "God Bless the Child" being dragged out (although not unmercifully) for 15 minutes. The performances, which usually do not swing in a conventional sense, do have a momentum of their own. Jarrett is generous in allocating solo space to Peacock and it is obvious that the three musicians were listening very closely to each other. Jarrett, who has often taken himself a bit too seriously, is surprisingly playful at times in this format.

Yesterdays

Yesterdays is the third title ECM has released by Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette. This also marks a first in the pianist's career: the George Gershwin tune "You Took Advantage of Me" appeared on My Foolish Heart in a very different arrangement, making this the first time Jarrett has ever employed a single track on two consecutive albums. On My Foolish Heart Jarrett used a full-on ragtime intro to the tune. Here, he employs a denser harmonic construction based on its changes and melodic frame. When the band enters, the pop and swing in the tune become pronounced, standing in the same universe as ragtime (which is more than likely the reason Jarrett employed it before) but also much more sophisticated and harmonically complex. Other standouts on this fine set include the bop burners "Scrapple from the Apple" and "Shaw'nuff," the glorious ballads "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "You've Changed," and a deeply moving rendition of "Stella by Starlight." What is most remarkable about this band is its sense of balance between eloquence, interplay, improvisational communication, and swing.

The State was a comedy troupe on MTV in the 90s. They made an album and for some reason or another, it was never released. Hopefully you're a fan of the group already and if so this album should help tide you over until the full series is released in July.

PS - It's worth noting that apart from tracks 1, 5, 6, 9 and 24, none of the real titles of the sketches are known. Of course, I think a good number of them are most likely accurate, but you never know.

After a first listen I think it's great, it's ultra repetitive but that's exactly what I wanted from it. Maybe a bit of a letdown because I love both artists and it didn't blow my mind, but two really solid tracks in my opinion.

Neva Dinova

The Hate Yourself Change

The last thing we heard from the long running but little recognized Omaha band Neva Dinova was 2004's One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, a split EP with Bright Eyes. It seemed like Oberst was assisting a band he admired, one that would earn exposure and credibility by sharing an EP with him. Neva Dinova actually outshone Bright Eyes on the EP, as Jake Bellows's weary voice oozed over sepia-toned Americana that was clear and concise if occasionally a bit murky. Now that the group has become known outside of Omaha, here's its proper coming-out party, The Hate Yourself Change.

Neva Dinova has crafted a dreamy, slow-burning lament that is consistently pleasant, occasionally exceptional, and-- in inspired spurts-- aimed squarely at the FM band. This newfound directness from a band that used to play triple-guitar slowcore jumps out from the first track, "Hat O'er Eyes", which is comprised solely of treacly vocals and a folksy acoustic strum. Bellows has a rich, aching voice, like a rough-around-the-edges Jeff Buckley, yet refrains from the affected drama of Omaha heavy hitters like Oberst or Son, Ambulance's Joe Knapp. The sultry "Ahh" blossoms with angelic harmonies as Bellows switches between winsome emoting and a deadpan drawl; with its delicate phrasing, subtle shimmer, and steady increase in intensity, it wouldn't be out of place next to Coldplay. One of the few upbeat songs on the album, "She Can't Change", follows suit-- it's a steady build around a pristinely simple and poppy guitar figure.

But in the end, this same consistency may be what keeps Neva Dinova breaking out of Omaha. Too many of their songs are agreeable but interchangeable. "The Champion", Can't Wait to See You", "Blackest Heart", "Cold Calls", and "On/Off" have little to recommend one over the others: They're all depressive ballads that build to radiant peaks, tinged with gentle psychedelia, recessed harmonies, and Bellows's able but unvaried vocal presence. But there are bright flashes of deviation on The Hate Yourself Change that indicate Bellows is struggling out of his perennial mode. "A Picture in Pocket", with its lean, repetitive throb and tightly reverberating guitars, sounds a lot like Franz Ferdinand, especially the fey vocal chorus. And "I've Got a Feeling", the album's closer, trades in Bellows's lovelorn aphorisms for a more caustic vocal and lyrical turn, a weary, expletive-riddled screed that mounts toward the choral refrain, "The world's a shitty place and I want to die." Barring these aberrations, The Hate Yourself Change works best as an innocuous bedtime record; including them, it's a snapshot of a band taking a tentative step toward the next echelon of recognition and accomplishment.

Neva Dinova

Omaha-based Neva Dinova has put out a very tidy ten-song, self-titled album. Coming off as a cross between a dreamy, ambient guitar-fronted project, a lounge act ("Lucifer's Lament"), and an Americanized U2, the five lads in Neva Dinova don't seem to falter too much. This album seems suited for the bitter cold days of winter looking out onto pastoral landscapes. Tunes such as "Did You Disappoint Your God?" reflect this gentle mood. The next song, "At Least the Pain Is Real," reflects another side of the band, while not alienating anyone. It starts out with simple guitar and drum work and builds into a pseudo-Radiohead swagger until the chorus bursts at the seams, sending the song all over the place in a beautiful mess. Later on in the tune, the guitar plays out a delicate solo and at the point where one might think it'll play back on itself and repeat, it instead works nicely into a gentle distortion reminiscent of a refreshing drink from a natural waterfall. Definitely an album meant for the more starkly emotional months related back to autumn and winter, this self-titled work shows that there's more going on in Omaha than some might think.

You don't know The Crystal Method? They've been around since the early 90's, rockin' out electronic jams with the likes of The Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, and Fatboy Slim. This time 'round, in their fourth studio album (recorded in their own newly constructed full-sized recording studio), they go all-out, with a much darker sound and guest appearances like Matisyahu, Emily Haines (Metric), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), and Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order). If that's not enough to get you to download it, I don't know what is.

For me, this album goes almost hand-in-hand with the also-stellar 2007 Chemical Brothers release We Are the Night.

I posted this album much earlier and was very disappointed with its reception (in that i dont think very many downloaded it.) but i think this album is a masterpiece.

Because I trust the way Ubu's visionary humor and crackpot commitment rocks out and/or hooks in for the sheer pleasure of it, I'm willing to go with their excursions into musique concrete, and on this record they get me somewhere. The death of Peter Laughner may well have deprived America of its greatest punk band, but the subsequent ascendancy of synth wizard Allen Ravenstine has defined a survival-prone community capable of bridging the '60s and the '80s without acting as if the '70s never happened. Imitating randomness by tucking randomlike sounds into deep but tactfully casual structures, joyfully confusing organic and inorganic sounds, they teach us how to live in the industrial shift--imaginatively! A

great music really.... i feel like pere ubu was a great influence on frank black and therefore the pixies. especially with their infusion of noise, surf rock, and yelps.

are people so fucking sad that they HAVE to ensure everybody downloads what they post?  i can honestly say i've never gone and checked how many downloads any of my uploads have gotten - i saw once when i went on mediaf!re to retreive the link for a mate, and though "oh, so it DID get downloaded, wow..." and that was it.  isn't this thread about sharing stuff, not talling up fucking scene points or whatever.
