I don't think I've ever actually mentioned the brilliance of Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe, as broadcast on the characteristically tolerable BBC Four. It's a show about television and it happens to be thoroughly enlightening, hilarious and also exposes all the hidden facets of television production. Thankfully, you can watch every episode on youtube, with each show broken into three bite sized chunks. The first episode of Season One is here. You can find the rest of the shows by searching youtube using the following codes. For example - S1E1P1 is Season One, Episode One, Part One. They get better as the series go on. Essential viewing for anyone with an interest in visual media or television!

I think that is mentioned in S1E1P1.
The later seasons are much better.

Charlie Brooker is a god. A funny, funny god. I love pretty much anything he writes. He's the best columnist in the Guardian by far, Screenwipe is amazing, and apparently he was rather amazing when he was a games journalist too.
My housemate also finds him strangely attractive.

I would also like to throw my support behind Brooker (not that it counts for much.) Screenwipe is actually one of the few things I watch on television. It is kind of strange that the people most likely to watch a media review show are the very people who don't like all that much on television.

Charlie Brooker is great.
Also see if you can find Cruelty Zoo, a cartoon he did for PC Zone magazine that resulted in an issue being pulled from the shelves of a major newsagents across the UK.

Charlie Brooker's Newswipe. Less funny, more informative. Still good television.

Second episode was out just a few hours ago, but BBC4 hates foreigners. Does anyone know of a good proxy service that goes through Britain?

You know I watched the special US episode of ScreenWipe and I think we're even Trapped in the closet? Screenwipe brilliant. NewsWipe, so cynically brilliant. GamesWipe... they need to make more! Charlie brooker also has a comedy panel type show called "You have been watching"It's had me in stitches quite often, some is very UK related though.

Oh god that's terrible. I enjoy Brooker as a critic, but he's failed spectacularly at making television (Dead Set being a notable low point). With You Have Been Watching he tries to lampoon the generic panel game format, but that doesn't work when you've made a boring generic panel game. It's not like his criticism programmes are well structured or anything, they're very repetitive, but they hold up because his bile spewing is a lot of fun.

I had genuinely forgotten his involvement in Nathan Barley, which I did like. Perhaps he just hasn't worked with collaborators that suited him with his other projects. And I do really enjoy Screenwipe and Newswipe but I don't think they're particularly well made television, they just contain very entertaining criticism (for the most part). Which works great for them, but it isn't something transferable to a programme that relies on something other than criticism.
And seriously, Dead Set average?

I know someone who went one a date with him. Apparently it was good.

This is the sort of fast paced timing I need for my show.
Awesome.
Really. So very nice. The little scrambled static cuts between segments in the first episode? Nice.

i have, over the last few months, exhausted just about every episode of screenwipe/newswipe on youtube, and also bought two of charlie brooker's books ("screen burn" and "the hell of it all"). not sure how i'd never heard of him before, but the guy is seriously my fucking hero now!
glad to see there's others who appreciate his humour. when i waxed lyrical about his work to my mates, they revealed themselves to be a load of pussies who didn't like "how harsh he is" and his "over-critical nature." the fucks.

I've been a huge fan of Brooker. His game show "You Have Been Watching" was pretty good too, on Channel 4.
Newswipe's been good this series, although I've never quite liked Newswipe it's proven me wrong. Just want them to commission a series of Gameswipe!
