I kind of agree, there's something off-putting about their sound and I can't figure it out.  I can't get into them and I don't know why.

Opeth's album "Damnation," which is, in opposition to what its name would suggest, soft, mellow, melancholic and peaceful in a depressing way.

As much as I enjoy the pomp, exuberance, and sheer energy that goes into R. Wagner's magnum opera, I don't really think that that's what the OP is looking for...

no, i would never seriously place any of the four above-mentioned people in the same breath as soulja boy.

but that clearly didn't occur to you. which leaves me to your actual comment.

"Why in hell would you recommend Soulja Boy?"

what the fuck do you care? even if i was recommending soulja boy, is it your place to beat people with "inferior" music taste into submission until they think like you? is there a required listening list for every QC reader? jesus christ, get over yourself.

Woah calm the hell down man. I have no problem with Rap or Hip Hop or whatever but honestly Soulja Boy isn't that great and is completely overplayed, you don't need to go freaking out, just expressing an opinion, it's what we do on these forums. And i was not belittling your music taste, you just honestly need to calm down.

Hey kiddo, in case you haven't noticed, sarcasm and irony can be very difficult to portray in a forum setting. And stating "Oh and Soulja Boy" isn't the kind of phrase that makes it seem that your being sarcastic.

i assumed that suggesting he listen to soulja boy after name-dropping wagner, django, dylan and the pixies would pull off the irony. but perhaps you're right.

That's unfortunate for you, sir.

Why do you say that? I don't care for his recordings. His music? It's tolerable. But if you're going to be a performing and recording artist, get better at the 'performing' and 'recording' bits if you're already good at the 'art' bit. Guy's got a voice like nails on a chalkboard.

i've never come up with a good argument against the voice thing, except that i personally disagree. though there are huge sections of his career where i do agree. but for his most recent three albums or so, the early-mid 70's, and the 60's i'm sort of unable to argue about dylan because for me it seems to have tapped into the area of the brain usually reserved for religious faith. my argument would consist of "....but he's so gooood..." and i'm afraid that likely would not convince you.

I've always thought Dylan was underrated vocalist. He's extremely nasal obviously so clearly some people will hate him anyway, but as far as competence I mean. I think both Desire and Blood On The Tracks have some stellar vocal performances on them.

Idunno, man, just because my dad's painful falsetto can hit the notes and even ad-lib well doesn't mean he's a great singer. And Pavarotti didn't make a living off of a harmonica in his throat.

Pat, I seriously have no idea what the hell the first sentence of your post means.

Quite apart from which, being a great vocalist isn't always about competence, it's about feeling, passion etc. Granted, feeling and passion aren't always there in Dylan's work - but then a lot of people like that about him, the can't-be-arsed attitude, the bohemian cool among a bunch of cool bohemians.

And Pavarotti also didn't make any music that I give a shit about, so I suggest you make a better example.

Yeah DK that quote basically says "Dylan had passion and feeling which is more important than singing skill, but what a lot of people like about him is that there was no passion or feeling in his singing."

Or so it reads to me. Clarify?

i think he meant (and this is the reason i affirmed his statement) is that there is passion and feeling in dylan's music; these are usually the periods in which people like him because he actually sounds good. though he may not have a technically "good" sounding voice.

however, just as often in dylan's career, there has been a seeming lack of these redeeming qualities. these are usually the periods where the critics bash him, the public doesn't dig him much (the late 70's-all through the 80's), and even the hardcore fans are a bit disappointed with him. however, the fact that he appears to not give the slightest shit what anyone thinks, and sometimes goes so far as to deliberately make bad albums (apparently he has admitted this, though i have never seen that claim backed up), gives him that bohemian bad-ass cool DK referenced. which i have to admit wins me over as well. youtube his interview with ed bradley on 60 minutes.

The only Dylan record that I like--and it happens to be one of my favorite records period--is Blonde on Blonde. He tones down the nasally whine, and the music is beautiful. Of course. Highway 61... and Blood on the Tracks are classics, and the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is nice, but I just get sick of them after a few songs. Blonde on Blonde is the only one I can listen to the whole way through without getting annoyed. So I totally agree with you Patrick. And it's nice to know that others feel that way. Saying that to so many people is like sacrilege. People think that Bob Dylan is untouchable and can't conceive that some people don't worship him as an artist or a musician.

I said feeling, passion etc. as being general referring to vocalists, not just Dylan. And I also said, granted these aren't ALWAYS there in Dylan's work, and the can't be arsed attitude is basically the way he approaches everything else, not his singing specifically.

Some people don't like Bob Dylan and some people do, but this isn't helping Yelley find new music.
