Okay since the last photography thread is locked, and a small request on how to run the next one, here's the new photography thread.

New rule:
Thumbnails and/or links only.

That's all.

So to start this thread off:

Concert warmups in stagelight makes some pretty great motives! A trio of accordion, violin and cello was playing stuff by Bach, Ravel and Gubaidulina, and I got permission to mess around before the concert while they were warming up and checking stagelights, so I ran over with my film-based and shot some photos. I am pretty pleased with how they turned out (but I fucking hate my scanner, so much duuust and so much scratching argh).

I also discovered taking an un-posed picture of a person playing accordion is really, really hard.

First of all, I want to rape the cello.
Second of all- what kind of film camera did you use? My minolta would probably die of exhausting attempting that.

It's just a really cheap camera, about twenty years old, inherited from my parents when they jumped the analogue ship - Canon EOS 10, with 400ISO Tri-X film.

Thankee kindly. I very much like the lighting in your orchestra pics too. I havent' done B&W film for too long; I had a bathroom studio set up and everything, I should do it again someday.

(I'm a bit alarmed to note that the left hand side of my pics seem a bit soft; that lens wasn't cheap...  sad )

Photoshop may or may not have been involved in these. The first two are from a juggling show at the Fargo street fair, the second is from laying in the park in May.

I am starting a new photo project today - 365 pictures forthcoming, one per day for one year, no matter what. I'm not going to post all of them here obviously, but figured I'd mention it if anyone's interested in taking a look. First shot is a portrait of my sister, which she hated and I am not entirely pleased with, but I think it turned out OK.

I guess this is kind of a self portrait. Those of you who are familiar with Paolo Pellegrin will recognise the use of backlit hands! Doing hands is, in photography as well as painting and drawing, the hardest anatomy by far - not so much depicting it realistically in photography, but more making them look like items with a certain visual force or power, I think I pulled it off decently although the photoshop job is terrible.

So, I've been dicking around with extreme macro effects. This is the crema off a shot of espresso:

I also did a bit of dicking around with off-camera flash. This is some flowers, illuminated in an unconventional manner:

I just scanned a bunch of old photos to put on an online portfolio (sending it to schools that aren't art schools). it is to show them that I actually do things other than sitting around with my friends watching gossip girl (cough).

from oldest to newest!

sophomore year: 1 2

about a year ago, you might have seen this one already: 3

first (and still favorite I think) polaroid emulsion: 4

peoples' backs in france, taken last february: 5 6 7

a stranger's baby, last spring: 8

rrghh this makes me so nervous. I'm not necessarily applying as an art major so I am trying to calm down but having people look at my work makes me so antsy. I will probably spend all night rescanning/touching up, I think I need to scan at a higher resolution maybe?

No filters at all, that is straight from the camera. And I used my little compact digital as always! It is all I have.

Also, Allybee, you have got some gorgeous contrast in some of those shots. I like it.

if anyone is curious, only 2, 3, 5 and 7 went into the portfolio.

thanks elcap! what've you been up to lately, photography-wise? haven't seen any of your stuff for ages, but that coffee looks wonderful, so well-lit. shooting digital?

speaking of digital, I'm looking into buying a used dslr (not really something I can afford right now, but whatever, who needs a car?). I think I'm ready to go into color photography. it's funny, because a lot of people think that making a picture black and white automatically makes it look "arty" and improves the shot. you really have to pay attention to composition and tones when shooting black and white, which is why a lot of photography programs make you start with it. but I am craving color, though, and color film + processing fees are going to stack up, so while I love being in the darkroom, looks like I might be headed towards digital. I've heard good things about nikon (I'm lucky enough to own a canon slr) but I'm also looking at pentax and maybe olympus.

I agree. Shame about how opaque the shadow is on the second one; the head doesn't quite fit in smoothly against the bridge lighting, but i really like the black and white one. Really captures the seemingly synthetic feel of the surroundings.
