So my options at this point are the Canon 450D, the Canon 500D, and the Nikon d90. I am leaning towards the 450D or the Nikon d90.

I will be getting it sometimes this week. Eeeee.

this page would help you a bit then, i guess. the d90 is a bit too expensive in my opinion, i mean, it doesnt offer anything that makes it $400 better than the 450d except the 720p video recording feature.

So I am double posting, and not really with good reason. But I have only gotten the chance to use my camera ONCE :c

I really like the manual autofocus points + heavy Dof. I am obviously not good with it yet but I like these pictures(this is my new friend Elliat, she has no make-up on, has wet hair, and it's 8am, and she looks fabulous. ffff).

Hey guys,

I finally got the camera working that I got like a month ago.

It's a Yashica Electro 35, and the problem was that they no longer make the batteries for them. But I put in a 6v with extra spring (that was the hard part, finding a place that sells springs).

I might soon be joining your ranks. I really hope it works.

So, my parents recently bought me a Sony a200 camera as an early Christmas gift.  I really don't know much about more serious cameras like this; does anyone know of any good sites or books I can learn a few things from?  I don't really plan on getting into heavy detail and technicals and stuff, just how to utilize the best of what I have, you know?  I also have a little bit of knowledge in Photoshop.

I have the a300, so I think they're pretty much the same?

It all depends on what kind of photography you're aiming to do. I don't really know of any sites. I learned by doing, but what I've picked up on seems to work.

The main things you need to know how to work are the Aperture and the Shutter Speed when you're using an SLR. General rules are the lower the aperture (f.stop) the more bright and vivid your pictures, the faster your shutter speed the crisper your pictures will be.

A: The Wheel of Fortuuuunnneeee! I figured the best way to work out how to use my camera was to avoid all the pretty picture options and go straight for the letters (mainly M, because you control everything then).

B: This camera isn't set to Live View (which gives the preview on the screen of what you're shooting at). But it means you can see the screen information easier! The 1/250 is the shutterspeed. 1/125 or 1/250 are pretty okay general purpose shutterspeeds. 1/400 is what I use when taking BMX or skateboard photos, as it catches stuff in motion pretty crisply but still lets light and colour into the shot. For night photography I use a tripod an a shutterspeed of 1/4 or go all the way into the seconds range. The "F5.6" is the aperture. I still don't have a clue how aperture works but I tend to always use the lowest aperture possible as it lets colour in. If in doubt about it, use the "S" setting, as it has an automatic aperture control (but I don't think it's that great).

C: This wheel controls the shutter speed. Move it to the left to lower it, to the right to make it bigger.

D: Hold this button in whilst using C changes the aperture!

And, well, that's all I've really learnt.

The wikipedia pages seem to have decent information on shutterspeed.

But yeah, I don't know a thing about ISO or lenses. That's about all I've learnt in 6 months of using the Sony Alpha. Hope it kinda helped in some way.

Anyone have much experience working with RAW files? If so, what program do you use for the processing and if you feel like briefly sharing your workflow that'd be grand.

Anyone have much experience working with RAW files? If so, what program do you use for the processing and if you feel like briefly sharing your workflow that'd be grand.

I work in RAW, for the most part. First things first - a DNG converter, rids you of the annoying .xmp files, and makes them more portable and easier to use (in that with a DNG it doesn't matter what photoshop version you're using, whereas you'll probably need a RAW plugin for a CR2-format on an older PS version). After that, photoshop is the only thing I use, really: I know some people prefer to use Lightroom as a middle program, but I never saw the point of adding an extra program to the workflow if you know how to keep your files in a proper archive and take regular backups... As long as space isn't an issue (which it shouldn't be seeing as you're working with RAW files, right?), when you get to the photoshop menus, crank everything (except the MP count!) to maximum. Bitrate 16, 300 PPI. If the photo is for print, use Adobe 1998, if it's just for screen, use the standard sRGB (you probably know all this already though).

The main advantage of the RAW format is that it allows you to edit the file and adjust things like temperature, while destroying less image information than you would with the regular Photoshop options, resulting in higher quality end results. When I work in RAW format, I try to work after the general plan of doing as much as possible in the RAW dialogue, and as little as possible afterwards. You can't do things like dodge/burn etc. in the RAW dialogue, so keep the specific details to afterwards, but to as large an extent as possible - stuff like contrast and light strength is done better in the RAW dialogue.

I dunno if that helps at all or even if the things I am saying have any relevance any more. I have probably forgotten a bunch of stuff as well. Sorry:/

Man it snows in Turkey? I always thought it was a relatively warm country for some reason.

Also thanks Jens, I ended up trying out the Photoshop Camera RAW plugin thing, and browsing through adboe bridge. Seems pretty straightforward, and the colour depth is noticeably better with RAW files.

the southwestern regions are pretty warm all year round, but i'm up north in istanbul, and it snows here for a few weeks. central and eastern anatolia have the wildest winters though.

ya im in the army but these were all taken many years ago and trust me im not the only one in the army that smoked pot before they joined. I posted them here cuz its not just pictures of weed. They are very done very close up to show texture. I always thought they had some artistic value as still life or whatever. I'm not posting pics of me getting high while sitting around doing nothing. I wish i knew how to do hyperlinks better but honestly i don't and so just attaching a picture to the thread is easiest. I tried to make them smaller with limited success.

to hyperlink, press the button next to the image button.

(The one titled "Insert hyperlink".)

Alternately, if you want to get all fancy, you can do it like this:

Code:
[url=http://img.timeinc.net/time/daily/2007/0711/tbilisi_police.jpg]Men With Guns[/url]

Resulting in this:
Men With Guns

To resize, you can either use a photo editing program and just simply resize it, or use the BBCode like this -

Code:
[img height=250 width=250]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3229/2745331617_0f15748719.jpg[/img]

resulting in an image with those proportions! As seen here -

And make sure to correlate the width and height, otherwise it'll look like this:

If you want to do thumbnails you gotta get tricky: dis how you do it.

Code:
[url=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3229/2745331617_0f15748719.jpg][img height=250 width=250]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3229/2745331617_0f15748719.jpg[/img][/url]

hyperlinking to the image of the original size, replacing what would normally be the actual words of the hyperlink with an img tag, so that the image fills the roles in both the url AND the img tags! Clever, huh? Like nesting dolls!

So a resized, hotlinking image looks like this -
