Prepared pianos are delightful. Aphex Twin used a few on his Drukqs album, if I remember correctly.

i dunno i saw them a couple of years ago (before they started sucking bigtime IMO) and at one point they were having keytar/guitar duel that was absolutely amazing: Alexi would shred some amazing solo and then the keyboarder (forgot his name) would match it note for note, then do something even crazier which Alexi would then imitate on his guitar. they went back and forth like that for like five minutes; it was so fucking sweet.

One of my son's concerts involved the singer chucking a load of ping-pong balls into two pianos while they were being played (she had initially had them in a bucket on her head, and then poured them slowly on the floor - they were symbolising the souls of the victims of the Tay Bridge disaster, and the piece was a setting of the great William McGonagall's wondrous poem on the matter).

The balls bounced around making a delightful noise, and were, of course, less predictable than a simply prepared piano.  The same hall management also booked him to play some Cage, and then got all in a tizzy because of his preparing the piano, which they said might have damaged it!

I was at this concert at the Smithsonian for their 300th Anniversary of the Piano tribute where one of the pieces was a Cage prepared piano composition.  It was awesome.  Then later fucking Keith Emerson decided he should play his ridiculously bombastic crap on the prepared piano, which was terrible  Sad

My friend and I noticed this old dude sitting directly in front of us hanging out with a young-ish couple in full goth gear.  We were like, WTF?  It turned out to be Bob Moog.

Oh man.

That keyboard looks positively arcane. I think I want one, but I'm horrible enough at regular keyboard as is.

the one on bottom, obviously.
I'd like to try that keyboard out!

The button accordion is its closest relative among popular instruments, yeah.

They're expensive and hard to get is the thing. There was an older one made back around 2000 by a company that went under. The one they're selling now is a prototype, and looks kind of shitty. They say a new model is in the works. I'm keeping an eye on it, have been for years. The amount of sense that layout makes is really staggering if you think about it.

If I understand that correctly, there aren’t really 312 keys, right?  There are 312 buttons, but three buttons connect to a single "key," so there are 104 keys (= tones) you can play?

right. Still, the advantages of standardized fingering in every key, being able to slide chords, and having a two-octave range with one hand are pretty mind-blowing when you think about it. These will take over the world some day, I swear.

Some dude came up with a method to jury-rig a keyboard into accepting the Janko system. It's actually quite ingenious.

Part of me would get one because I want to learn piano, but the other part of me says "You'll never learn that thing, learn a normal piano!"
