You know. A place where we can upload hour-long (ish) playlists of our own design, for peer listening and enjoyment. I already bother all my real friends on facebook with them. So let's do it here!

Unless this has happened already and failed miserably.

In that case you may feel free to tell me off.

But srsly, who is in support of this idea? I think it could be rad.

Maybe I am misunderstanding but I thought that he meant a mixtape of other people's music?

Mixtape...I can't remember the last time I made an actual mix TAPE

Yes that is the general idea. And mixtape is just the term for it... "playlist of an assortment of audio files" doesn't have the same ring to it.

I don't know how you could possibly make such a ridiculous assumption

Also I just realised we have a tape deck with an input doover and all the right cables I can actually make a mix cassette

I think I am going to make one made up entirely of songs that were made before the invention of the CD and give it to a girl who likes redundant technology

Also, I have a CD player that records tapes. It's a lot easier for me. :p

I may go for this soon.

OK, to kick things off I am going to post the one that I just made today. The tracklist isn't that "new," for lack of a better word - at least to those who frequent the MediaF!re thread or pay attention to music in general. I guess you can decide at your own discretion.

In any event, according to my traditional internet mixtape numbering system, this is volume 11 (I've been making the damn things since 2007... whoa).

From the (rather depressing) note:

Quote
more than anything this one follows a distinct curve: it breaks you, then denies it. then it drags you down, and lifts you back up again.

it was therapeutic for me to make & hear. hopefully it achieves the same for outside listeners.

hope you like it.

lada laika presents music that matters more vol. 11: miss you

1. intervention - arcade fire
2. lovers in japan - coldplay
3. kingdom of rust - doves
4. go jetsetter - the postmarks
5. young adult friction - the pains of being pure at heart
6. all of a sudden - telekinesis!
7. under the blacklight - rilo kiley
8. grow up and blow away - metric
9. her morning elegance - oren lavie
10. i have nothing - noah and the whale
11. shuffle your feet - marla hansen
12. blonde on blonde - nada surf
13. your ex-lover is dead - stars
14. wake up - arcade fire

total running time: 54:28

That's a much better idea. Downloadable mp3 mixes just don't work at all, you can skip the tracks too easily (in some ways it's worse if they're all one long track since you end up stabbing wildly to skip things and it all gets far too disjointed). If I was to download the one that's been posted I'd probably give each track about twenty seconds before flicking to the next one and delete the Coldplay and Doves ones immediately on principle. The beauty of a mix is in the transitions, juxtapositions and having someone else's taste forced upon you. You can't do that with mp3s so there's no point. Tapes are the ultimate format for the mix and will never be bettered, although CDs are alright.

Yeah, that occurred to me after I posted so I edited it in. The problem's mainly with the way you get used to interacting with mp3s, even if I can't skip to the next track on that mix I can just immediately whack Unsane on as soon as I dislike something and the technology makes you so used to doing that, and skipping forward in an mp3 is nothing like having to fast forward a tape. It's just far too easy. With a mixtape you're stuck with what's on the tape, and even with a mix CD if you skip everything the music's over too quickly.

Which is what I did. The above mix I posted is 1 long mp3 file. Hence how the tracks are all mixed together, making it a mix rather than a playlist.

And honestly, from the sound of it A Pack Of Wolves, you're completely unenthusiastic about this idea and have nothing positive to contribute to the thread. So how about you GTFO? In my original post, I said "But srsly, who is in support of this idea? I think it could be rad." If you don't agree, don't ruin it for anyone who thinks it could be fun.

Yeah, sorry about that. My intention wasn't to be an arse but instead to support the idea that we make actual mixtapes, since as is probably a bit obvious I kind of have a very prejudiced thing about them for a whole bunch of reasons. But instead I just whinged about mp3 mixes in two separate posts. Which is crap really since it is actually a good idea for a thread, I just got self-indulgent and went off on one.

So in an effort to not just be the guy whinging from the sidelines when other people are trying to actually do stuff here is a slightly modified version of a mix called Baddooooom (the tags are messed up and I can't seem to fix them so it will claim to be Go Ape by XBXRX):

Code:

Track listing:

1. XBXRX - Go Ape
2. The Sonics - Strychnine
3. Upsilon Acrux - A Quart of Zolex
4. Deerhoof - This Magnificent Bird Will Rise
5. Melt-Banana - Cracked Plaster Cast
6. The Warmers - No One Like Me No One Like Me
7. Cease Upon The Capital - [Untitled] (Track 9)
8. The Monks - Oh, How To Do Now
9. Shellac - The End of Radio
10. Line - Egg Shaped Pit
11. Young People - El Paso
12. Milky Wimpshake - Too Much, Too Drunk
13. Arab Strap - There Is No Ending

I wanted to start this thread ages ago, but was scared because I am still new.

I like making mixtapes with themes. My boy just made me one that was all covers, I'm going to cheat and post it up (Esp. because I cannot come to this thread empty handed as I owe someone on her a tape *blushes*.):

Ike & Tine Turner - Whole lotta Love
Eagles Of Death metal - Midnight Creeper
The Locust - Flash
Cave in - NIB
Fu Manchu - Godzilla
Life Of Agony - Don't You (Forget About Me)
Nine Inch Nails - Dead Souls
Seu Jorges - Changes
The Dirtbombs - Livin For The City
The Mutato Muzik Orchestra - Hey Jude
Throat - Crazy Horses
Casualties Of Jazz - The Wizard
Dump - Raspberry Beret
Frances St Baker - No One Knows
Take A Worm For A Walk Week - Whip It

How would anyone feel about suggesting themes and then all posting up playlists etc. around that theme? It makes it more challenging, I like a challenge. So far, since making & receiving mixes from the boy we've had Hangover songs, Going to Work Songs, Sexytime songs & Driving/Road trip (Inspired by the thread on here).

I would also do real tapes, but don't have any way of doing them at the mo, not until all my things come out of storage.

Holy cow this is harder than I thought. Most of these songs are either pro-one night stand, feeling sad about a long-term relationship, or Meatloaf. Goddammit.

OK, I did something a little different for this one. It's not technically a "mixtape," as it were - it's not one long .mp3 file. But it is meant to be listened to as a whole, and if you as a listener can't control yourself and absolutely have to skip one of the tracks, then knock yourself out.

(In case you were wondering, this is another one dedicated to the loss of one of my very close friends. However, whereas the last one was created about of a pure emotional response, I took a lot of time and effort into making this one.)

shebang shebang,
download:
Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?n0inydjnwow

1. put your slippers on - tim and sam's tim and the sam band featuring tim and sam
2. neighborhood #1 (tunnels) - arcade fire
3. the predatory wasp of the palisades is out to get us! - sufjan stevens
4. moths and butterflies - press on randy
5. the dream about the girl in the old house - photosynthesis
6. all for the best - thom yorke
7. to have a crush - cassettes won't listen
8. welcome home, son - radical face
9. blonde on blonde - nada surf
10. your ex-lover is dead - stars
11. wake up - arcade fire
12. one day like this - tim and sam's tim and the sam band featuring tim and sam

This is a mix. It tells a story. Not a literal tale, with characters or plot points, but an emotional story. It has its ups and downs. The songs I chose are completely deliberate. The order in which they are listed is also deliberate. These are the songs that move me. They give me goosebumps. They make me feel happy and sad, all at the same time. And, more than that, they mean something to me. And if I played my cards right, they could even mean something to you.

While the tracklist may be fairly straightforward, there's a certain way I like to think about the way these songs are organized. In my mind, this mix is divided into three sides: a, b, and c. Side a encompasses songs 1 - 5, side b is 6 - 9, and side c is 10 - 12. There's no real purpose behind my thinking. But when I listen to it I get the distinct sense that each side is a chapter in the story of this mix, and so I sense the divisions between songs 5 and 6, & 9 and 10. If you do too, that's cool. If you don't, that's alright too. This is just my personal feelings about how this mix tells its story.

This also means that I don't jump into this mix anywhere in the story. I either start at track 1, 6, or 9. I can't jump in the middle of a chapter, because that's ruining half the story. Obviously I can't control whether or not you do the same, but it would mean a lot to me if you did, at least once, listen to the entire thing all the way through, without skipping a song, just once. I know it's asking a lot. But if you have 55 minutes and 45 seconds to spare, it'd be cool if you did.

If you download the mix, thanks for listening. If you don't, I'm not sure why you read this far. But thanks to you too. There's something oddly cathartic about doing (and listening to) this. Maybe I'm just insane, but I feel some value in it.

Anyway. Hopefully you enjoy it.

I came up with the idea of making three different mixes to try and see if i was any good at differentiating between different moods of music and how songs mix. This is still in individual .mp3 format but i will get around to making it into 1 long track pretty soon.

This is the first mix i have come up with which is supposed to be light electronic and dance-y rock and pop generally played early on in the night.

Starlight Mix

Now mixed into 1 track:
Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?wo5itbyjmmm

Individual .mp3 files
Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?mktiguymz4m

Tracklist:
1. Alpinestars - Snow Patrol Pt.1
2. The Avalanches - A Different Feeling (Paperclip People Remix)
3. Röyksopp - Only This Moment (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke Remix)
4. Röyksopp - This Must Be It
5. Stars - The Night Starts Here
6. The Avalanches - Electricity
7. The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
8. Coconot - Conservad El Rayo
9. The Whitest Boy Alive - Courage
10. LCD Soundsystem - Tribulations
11. Starfucker - Florida
12. Elle S'appelle - Little Flame
13. El Guincho - Antillas
14. Soulwax - NY Lipps
15. The Rapture - I Need Your Love
16. Coconot - Ibiza

I was about to point out that you may have forgotten to put Montag's Going Places in it, but I re-checked your post a bit later.

I'll download it a bit later. I might do a mixtape too, if I have time.

These are all COMPLETELY different to any mixtapes I've be made recently. This is a very good thing. They are quite lovely & contain things I don't own. Thankyou x

You can probably do it with Audacity.

Yeah, Audacity is what I was about to recommend. I use my college labs' Pro Tools, but that shit is expensive if you don't want to pursue a career in audio.

If you have a Mac, Garageband is also a viable option.

How would anyone feel about suggesting themes and then all posting up playlists etc. around that theme?

I'm game! One of my friends recently suggested an idea I thought had merit: The Regrettable One-Night Stand mix.

Make it happen, mixtape thread!

Oh man, I made one for this a while ago, but it's just a cheesy dance mix circa early 2000s.

It's fun listening to the selections here. Scarred, I noticed in first two mixes you had Your Ex-Lover Is Dead followed by Wake Up twice, so I thought I'd check out if that is the winning combination. I'm still really used to hearing Crown of Love before it, but the songs work for the mood you're setting.

I posted an animal-themed mix a few months ago in the mediaf!re thread, and since I still listen to it all the time, I'll link it here. I enjoyed finding all the animals and shopping them in for the cover:

pt. 1: hipster seal clubbing
01 - Super Furry Animals - Ymaelodi A'r Ymylon
02 - Guillemots - Trains to Brazil
03 - Animal Collective - Grass
04 - Wolf Parade - It's a Curse
05 - Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent
06 - Dinosaur Jr. - Little Fury Things
07 - The Wrens - Per Second Second
08 - Phoenix - Lasso

pt. 2: noctural bedroom sounds
01 - New Buffalo - I've Got You and You've Got Me (BSS remix)
02 - Birdie - Blue Dress
03 - T. Rex - Mambo Sun
04 - Spacehog - In the Meantime
05 - Grizzly Bear - Deep Sea Diver
06 - Minus the Bear - Absinthe Party At the Fly Honey Warehouse
07 - Mogwai - Take Me Somewhere Nice
08 - Cat Power - I Found a Reason
09 - Seabear - I Sing I Swim
10 - Panda Bear - Good Girl/Carrots

Pt. 1: http://www.mediaf!re.com/?kmdxchddhmy
Pt. 2: http://www.mediaf!re.com/?inymo3wmhhz

Someone who downloaded it recently mentioned they had problems extracting track 7 of disc 2, so I reupped it:

Two Hundred Thousand Million

This one is all one track! Yay, getting back in the spirit of things. It is transitional - mostly post rock, occasionally ambient, always shifting from one tempo to the next. One minute there'll be calm and before you know it, sonic destruction rains on your ears. Enjoy.

1. Volcano Choir - Dote
2. Faunts - Instantly Loved
3. Oceans - Lit Up Under Streetlights
4. Japandroids - Crazy/Forever
5. California Stories Uncovered - Red
6. Eluvium - Seeing You Off The Edges
7. Helios - For Years And Years
8. The Album Leaf - Shine
9. This Will Destroy You - Threads
10. Surface of Eceon - The Open Sea
11. Explosions in the Sky - What Do You Go Home To?

Mix for my Mom

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?a0ymt5dzizq

1. Brain Damage – Pink Floyd
2. Eleanor Rigby – The Beatles
3. Piano Man – Billy Joel
4. Come Together – The Beatles
5. Your Troubles – From the movie The Point
6. Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd
7. I Want You (She's So Heavy) – The Beatles
Length: 31:27

Basically, it is songs that I like from artists that my mom introduced me to, some of the songs are obviously my mom's favorites as well. There aren't that many bands, because even when I asked her for more bands, she couldn't really name any.

I threw this together last night. Felt like it would be fitting to have a remix of a Maserati track, given the tragic passing of Jerry Fuchs. I tried to stay with a somewhat downtempo/electronic feel, but there's also a little ska tossed in. 10 songs, 41 minutes, one .mp3 @ 192kbs.

1. The Avalanches - "Undersea Community"
2. CFCF - "Color Dreams"
3. Greg Davis - "Sea Green and Cyan (V.2)
4. Tosca - "Dave Dudley"
5. Thunderball - "To Sir With Dub"
6. Skatalites - "Split Personality
7. Maserati - "Inventions" (Justin Van Der Volgen remix)
8. Tobacco - "Get My Nails Did"
9. Tobacco - "Hawker Boat"
10. Bobby Hughes Experience - "Upper Mansion Suite"
