Looking for a recipe for yelling-bird stew

« on: September 17, 2009, 05:10:39 AM »

Wouldn't be the first time that I'm a minority (perhaps even all by myself) but it would be nice to see some old characters back.

Sara basically just dropped off the face of the comic with only an allosaurus to blame for. I was actually rooting for her being the owner of Momo-tan (turned out to be Marigold, as we all know).
Pizza Girl would be nice to see again, even though it would 'ruin' a part of Penny's 'mystique'.
I also wouldn't mind seeing:
  • Meena
  • the marine biologist Steve used to go out (can't remember her name)
  • and naturally any and all appearances of Jimbo and Tai are always welcome.
I'm dead certain I missed a few, but there you go.

P.S. Where's Pintsize? Surely Marten has gotten him a new chassis by now?

Sara lasted for a whole half-dozen comics if that before Jeph realized she sucked, so I think there's little chance of her return at all.
Meena was just part of a short arc of Steve who only rarely shows up, so is not worth returning to either.
Ellen is an ex, again of Steve, so it's not logical to bring her back in to play.
Tai, Jimbo and Pintsize will probably pop up now and again though, since there have a reason to interact with the main quad of characters (I consider Hanner's a 'main' character now).

Exes often disappear, especially if they weren't in the 'in' circle. So there's an in-world version for that.

As for the other characters it's just cause they're minor characters. They show up when needed. QC is mostly plot driven humour so if there's no space it's unlikely for them to be shoved in.

Poor Mieville, now that Dora is getting off, he probably no longer makes a worthy conversational partner for a lonely goth girl.

Raven Raven Raven.

Jimbo was awesome too.

Correction; Jimbo is awesome.  He'll pop in again, but you need to be in the right dive at the right time.

I'm concerned about Raven.  How do you bring back a character who just fell off the earth so long ago?  None of the other characters ever even referenced her - "I gotta go help Raven at the shop" or "Ravens covering for me tonight" would have explained most of her absences, "Raven quit and moved to Canada", nothing!  It's like she never existed!  And no one seems to miss her, either.   cry

I mean, it's not like she could just show up serving coffee one day with no one even blinking an eye!  shocked

Of course, she could show up with a Steve-like story about the submacopter...

...and her new boyfriend, Agent Turing...

Just sayin'. wink

Could be... most lit professors I ever knew drank themselves blind in seedy dives.

And before you ask; yes, quite a few.  My father is law was head of an English department - half my wedding was English & Lit professors.  Drank all the damn champagne and liquor we ordered (enough for a wedding twice the size of ours).

Course, the Math department guys on my side of the guest list put away a fair share of that too... and even managed to hide save me a bottle for the honeymoon.

Only distantly related.  Second cousin, maybe?

After all, a) it's been inactive for nearly 5 months, and b) it was asking about side characters being mainstreamed.

Back then, Raven, Steve and Jimbo (the winners of the poll) were not such distant memories, and Angus had been missing for a while!

It was even posited that Angus had found a GF... with a different outcome.  It's one of the few forum predictions I've seen that was even close to what Jeph gave us!

Maybe it's just because not much time passes comic for comic. Especially with all the new characters. I mean, a lot of the story arcs run parallel to each other so not seeing a character for what seems like a long time really isn't. It's kinda relative I suppose.

I don't know, Raven has made some really short and sudden returns a while ago. I was hoping she'd be back for good, but no luck...

I really think Raven is a lot more funny and interesting than say, Dora or Penny. I like all of the characters really, I just like some more than others.

Raven's backstory could make a really interesting set of strips.

Apparently I am the only one who misses Mieville.

Pizza Girl could show up on a day when Pennelope calls in sick, thus perpetuating the mystery, but Jeph may be tired of that joke.

Someone even nerdier than me could count the number of changes of clothes since the Submacopter episode.

Raven's Twitter hasn't been updated since June 28, which is a bad sign. I really hope Jeph hasn't given up on her. I can see him worrying that Raven-the-ditz was getting stale, but we know that Raven has some hidden depths and surprises waiting for us. I cite strip 838 and the math in 764.

Would Faye get jealous if Raven finally got her wish about Sven?

I miss Raven, and I'm just really scared that it's been so long since we last saw her that'll be too hard to re introduce her back into the comic, which is such a shame. She's probably one of my favorite characters, I relate to her the most haha.

It's amazing that Pizza Girl, a one-joke character who was in maybe two strips, consistently gets requests for her reappearance.

She coulda been a contenda, Jeph.  A potential breakout character.  All you had to do was come up with an infinite number of Pizza/Superhero gags and you could have renamed this strip "The Adventures of Pizza Girl" and retired rich, living off a line of superhero-wear, Pizza Girl aprons, maybe a chain of restaurants.

Hmm. Someone mentioned the characters mentioning other characters - like someone saying something about Raven covering at the shop. That might not be a bad idea, I don't think. I sometimes wonder what happened to the guys that Marten used to play with - the girl and her boyfriend. Are they still out there trying to form a band? Maybe they play local venues. We'd never know, because these guys (Marten and Friends) don't really hit up any local shows.

I'm all for references in the dialogue. Not really because I miss any of the characters, per se - but because I think that having references outside the group would help flesh out the QC world a little, y'know? There's got to be stuff happening outside the group that they know about.

I'd actually like to see more of Pizza Girl (even a cameo) Jimbo or another similar (new) character.

Just something to remind us that this is actually an alternative universe (with robots running around the place and all). Sometimes it just seems a little too Friends like... bunch of 20-somethings, coffee shop & their apartments.

Other than that, I'm pretty happy with the characters that we do see.
