Okay, early thoughts of these albums I got from the list.
Nick Drake - Bryter Layter - Brilliant, if understated. The harmonies on the strings are majestic. Can't stop listening to it.
The Who - Live At Leeds - I'm not really seeing the big deal, but I need to listen to it more.
Paul McCartney - McCartney - Aside from a handful of tunes, this seems like a total piece of shit to me.
Iggy Pop - The Idiot - Awesome. Like if the Stooges buttfucked Joy Division. Sounds like the soundtrack to a horror movie.
Nirvana - In Utero - Pretty good on first listen, pretty sure it's going to grow on me more but I like it already anyway.
Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go - After only two listens it's still growing on me.
Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space - What a piece of shit. It's one eighty-minute stoned waltz with terrible vocals. On paper this album should be one of my favourites ever, but it's fucking terrible.

I feel like I have missed the point of the last half-century of music, as I like less than 1% of this list.

I haven't yet because I've put it on my amazon Wish List, so my parents might be getting it/might already have got it for me for Christmas.
And what part of my Spritualized comment did you not understand?

He was expressing his disbelief that you cannot stand what is generally considered a fantastic album.

Well what is it that you guys like about it? I can understand why the kitchen-sink production could be appealing, and there is a raw, naked passion about it. But it's just so dense and so long, there's not enough dynamic to it. To me, kitchen-sink production is about the impact of dropping it in, not just using it immediately. And the songs are soooo long. The last one goes on for a verrrrry long time.

Okay, it's not so much kitchen sink as it is wall of sound.

Funny, I bought "Ladies and Gentlemen" the other day and listened to it on the way to a Fuck Buttons show, I thought it was utterly fantastic. Blew me away.

Of course compared to Fuck Buttons, Spiritualized seem positively minimalistic.

This is true. I try to listen to music that's pretty different from what I'm going to see when I'm on the way there. But really, "Ladies and Gentlemen" was almost as good as Lindstrom's "Where You Go I Go Too" for making a long car ride seem like an epic journey.

I haven't been really impressed by "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" either, especially given it's hugely positive reputation - but I can see it's the kind of album you need to be in the right context to truly appreciate. Should listen to it again sometime...

Jesus Christ, man. My favourite artists are Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd and Nick Cave. I love long songs. I also love them to go somewhere.
Is anyone actually going to say why they like this album, or are you just going to keep jangling each others balls, nudging and winking and wondering why I'm so stupid as not to like it?
