See, my problem with this kind of arguing is that some people pretend they're some kind of authority on the issue, when all they've done is briefly scour the wikipedia page on the topic for arguments to support their claims. The initial argument was presented thusly:
On the contrary, the verb to fuck comes to us from the German ficken (to fuck) with cognates in Dutch (fokken), Norwegian (fukka), and Swedish (fokka.)
The wikipedia article, however, tells a different story:
The word has probable cognates in other Germanic languages, such as German ficken (to fuck); Dutch fokken (to breed, to strike, to beget); dialectal Norwegian fukka (to copulate), and dialectal Swedish fokka (to strike, to copulate) and fock (penis).
So really, all Wikipedia establishes is that "ficken" is a probably cognate to "fuck", not that it is the undeniable origin of the English word... akronnick interpreted "probable cognate" as "historical origin", which sort of baffles me, because those phrases aren't even remotely similar. The wikipedia article continues to explain the possible reason of the cognate similarities between the languages, so it seems like the claim post was written after just reading on wikipedia for something vaguely related and then twisting and misquoting to present it as authoritative evidence, without even citing sources.
Basically this forum is like a webcomic conservapedia and please stop it guys
