Tai is polygamous, Dora likes males and females and as for Marteen, well I think this is the dream of every male on the planet.

The response is obvious. Lets them all live together in a happy threesome relationship. Thanks for the cheering I rest my case.

Also. Lets suppose a friend of mine is flirting with my GF while I am on the room and my GF hugging him. Lets suppose he is saying how much he want me to broke up for he can get my chick. Why is it different from what Tai is doing? I hate double-standards.

Dora is bisexual, but not necessarily polyamorous, Tai is a lesbian and so probably doesn't fancy Marten all that much, Marten might not fancy Tai. And it's not really a double standard at all. She isn't flirting with Dora, just sulking over the apparently impossible situation and being honest about it.

Because people let mainstream pornography inform their opinions on sex and relationships.

And Marten and Dora bringing Tai into a group won't work. Not that polyamorous arrangements can't work, it's that they only work if everyone is poly. Marten and Dora are not, and Tai seems to be coming to the conclusion that she may not be either. Remember, when Tai first appeared in the comic, she had not tried polyamory and wished for a monogamous lesbian relationship. It was only when she struck out with someone who was polyamorous that she decided to give it a try. At first, (perhaps because it was new and exciting, or because it opened up new possibilities) she enjoyed the experience. However, after doing it for a longer period of time, it has turned out to be less fulfilling than it was initially.

Part of being open to new possibilities is being open to the chance that what you thought you would like may not turn out to be what you wanted after all.

Tai is still in her formative years, (May God strike me dead if I ever get past mine) she is probably no older than twenty-two. Thank God I am not the same person I was when I was twenty-two.

Also, preferences evolve as we age and mature. And it may even be possible for someone to fall in love with someone who falls outside of their usual preference. (It has been known to happen)

What I am trying to say is that while in real life, no one knows what the future holds, we're talking about a comic, which has an author, who may have something really special in mind for Tai someday.

is that how you guys flirt? sulk and tell the person that you wish they would go out with you?

Why should Marten be angry anyway? It's not as if Tai is plotting and scheming to tear them apart. (Probably.)

I don't think that Tai meant that she wants Dora to break up with Marten so she can be with her, even joking.

I think she meant that she wants someone like Dora, who is as interested in her as Dora is in Marten. And she is dissatisfied that no one in the circle of people she has been dating/fooling around with is willing to commit to her.

Face it, finding out someone is attracted to you and you specifically is a huge turn on.

Then she should've said that. Easy enough to do instead of sounding like you want someone's relationship to end (for the second time, as I recall—that other one was plotting and scheming, but again, I hope it was meant as a joke). This sounds way too much like "Jessie's Girl," except the narrator in that keeps his mouth shut about his intentions. The fact that Tai didn't think enough to realize her comments might be taken well says volumes about her.

As for the other, Tai's got some changing and distancing to do if she wants that. Anyone who's looking for commitment and knew her would probably not have Tai high on their prospects list, if for no other reason than the fear they'd never be enough.

is that how you guys flirt? sulk and tell the person that you wish they would go out with you?
Any way you can get the idea planted in her head, you take. So, when she has a fight with Marten, she remembers.

Sorry. I realize that I'm making Tai out to be far more Machiavellian than she has the attention span to be. Maybe.

Tai was clearly flirting in the earlier strip (I don't know the number) in which she said she wanted to sleep with Dora.

Dora is at least willing to play with the idea on a theoretical level, even though she's monogamous: 776, and 1394, unless that was purely maternal.

Going through the archives (especially the "photocopier" arc), I have to think Marten sees Tai as a "competitor" for his GF. As much as Dora gets insecure about Marten's feelings towards other girls (Faye in particular, others like Cosette and the "four girlfriends from high school" in general), Marten gets that way towards Tai. Of course, being the "inept Indie boy" that he is, he feels like it's only inevitable that she'd leave him for some girl.

Tai was clearly flirting in the earlier strip (I don't know the number) in which she said she wanted to sleep with Dora.

Dora is at least willing to play with the idea on a theoretical level, even though she's monogamous: 776, and 1394, unless that was purely maternal.

When Tai said that she was coming from an environment where the typical response for asking to sleep with someone's girlfriend involves an immediate cellphone conversation that goes something like this: "Honey, you know that thing we were talking about, Tai's totally into it! Get over here, Quick!"

Now she's finding that she is unsatisfied by that kind of lifestyle, and is seeking advice from people she trusts, and probably the people she knows best who have found happiness in a different lifestyle.

I also do not believe that Marten feels threatened by Tai. He did feel a little uncomfortable when Dora wanted to see Tai's new piercing, but that's pushing anyone's boundaries. How many straight ladies would be OK with their man checking out another girl's vulva, even if they were all close friends and everyone was secure that no one wanted to change anyone's relationship status? (man that situation is hard to describe without sounding like an inconsiderate, hetero-normative douchebag, or an attorney!)

My point is, I can't see Tai being in anyway serious about wanting Dora to give up Marten for her, and Marten is totally secure in the knowledge that Tai would never actually take Dora away from him, and all three of them are aware that Tai's flirtation with Dora is nothing more than her way of showing friendly (rather than romantic) affection.

Celticgeek, help! I cannot remember the number of the strip where Tai rushes in announcing to Dora that Marten has given them permission to hook up and tells Dora all the reasons she should break up with Marten. It's believable that she was joking, of course.

Akronnick, I'm sure Marten and Dora know that's not going to happen—and Dora'd have to have had a lobotomy to dump Marten for Tai, anyway, for the reasons I mentioned above. So they know she's not serious. But I'm not quite so sure Tai knows that.

The more I think about it, the more it reminds me of those occasions when your older brother brings a super hot girl from college, one who makes things worse by treating you like a person instead of a plague-bearer the way the girls your age do. It's so bad you actually slip and let your feelings show. Your brother and the girl are in haha, how-cute-is-that mode, and you laugh, too, on the surface. But inside…
…inside you'd like to say what Tai said to Marten, only you know your brother will beat you senseless if he thinks you have serious intentions towards his girl. Tai knows Marten won't.

wait a minute, is that a yes? are you serious?
Human deviousness on the field of love knows no bounds. It's not flirting, exactly, but it works, sometimes. I mean, Tai scored a hug, didn't she?

I see your point, and your interpretation is a definite possibility, I just think that Tai is just being honest, not trying to be devious.

It's the "basically" that makes me think that Tai would like to meet someone like Dora, not Dora herself. Without that, then Tai's statement would be more in line with your interpretation.

We'll have to see how this arc plays out (but then isn't that how it always is?).

Figure of speech is a figure of speech.

Darwin didn't say that, however several later darwinists did posit that it's a genetic, biological imperative that a male mate with as many females as possible in order to propagate his superior genes to the greatest extent possible.  Of course, that's male-centered thinking, perhaps a woman should mate with as many males as possible to spread her superior genes?  But then there's that whole gestation thing... sorta slows the process down.

Most males are programmed to want to procreate with multiple females in order to spread the genes and all that, but not necessarily all at the same time.  There's this widespread idea that all guys want a threesome, foursome, or moresome.  It's just not true.

I'm not quite clear on how this so-called imperative* has to do with threesomes, etc., unless you're implying that's as close to a harem as most men can manage.

*This idea bothers me because it resonates with Freud's ideas, and when it came to specifics, he was usually incorrect.

Indeed. I, for one, *thought* that I wanted a threesome for years because society tells me that I do. Then I thought about the actual mechanics of it and realized that it's too fucking complicated to work (for me). Plus, I don't like to share.

It also completely ignores all social conditioning ever. You can't really say that we play by nature's rules the way animals do as far as mating goes, there are so incredibly many different ways we go about it. We talk about penguins who stick together for the entirety of their lives, and about mallards, who procreate by gang rape and has been known to indulge in homosexual necrophilia - we do both. We also change throughout our lives - a lot of people fuck around a lot when they're younger, and settle down when they get older. So yeah I don't really think "biological imperative" is a good enough reason for thinking all guys feel the same way about sexual conquests. Because really, that's what threesomes comes down to, isn't it? Bragging rights.
