From the reviews I've been reading, the movie would have been far better if they'd gone with the original Magneto: Origins script instead of shoe horning in First Class stuff (the best parts of the film are The Adventures of Magneto: Nazi Hunter portions).

I wondered about that.  When X-Men Origins: Wolverine came out, the way it was titled made it seem like they were going to do a bunch of prequels exploring the origins of each of the main characters.  Then X-Men: First Class came out and I thought "Okay, I guess not."

But a little research reveals that this movie was originally going to be X-Men Origins: Magneto as you pointed out.  Maybe they realized that it's going to take like ten years or more to get through them all, and people will be totally sick of X-Men by then.

It was just various scripts and schedules colliding until they could crank a movie out. The thing is, it's highly doubtful that Matthew Vaughn's Magneto movie would have been much better, even though they were the best parts of this film. That was down to Michael Fassbender's excellent face, and certainly not the script/directing/staging/anything else at all. Take the pre-credits Magneto sequence - kind of okay conceptually, but in execution hilaribble.
