  • Francine I haven't been entirely truthful with you

Personally I find it strange that Faye would show a child how to mix a drink. That's crossing a line. You don't know if alcoholism runs in the kid's family or not. Teaching the proper using tools to someone else's kid is one thing but alcohol and someone else's children... you just should not go there. It's not someone else's call to introduce alcohol to my kids, even if they aren't sampling it.

For all we know, arson or knife crime runs in the family...

I agree. This is what bothered me about today's strip. Teaching a kid skills that could potentially be useful is one thing, but alcohol's a little different and I'd personally be more upset about that than the dang blowtorch.

You don't think the ability to mix drinks is a potentially useful skill?

Arson and stabbing tendencies are considerably less likely to run in the gene pool than alcoholism.

And recipes in general, sure, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say she would have been able to live a happy life if she postponed the drink-making skills a couple more years.

Seems like there's something missing in learning a skill that you can't enjoy the benefits of.

The approval of others may be a benefit that you appreciate, though.

That kind of describes the last couple of years at my last job.

  • I'm a blood donor: I play rugby.

Seems like there's something missing in learning a skill that you can't enjoy the benefits of.

My niece enjoyed the benefits:
Tips! lots of tips! Then she got a job she enjoys. It just took a few years to get 'em all.

And she's making more money than me now, mainly because I'm studying full-time and working part-time while she's studying part-time and working full-time. (Trust me, when drunk, never bet you can study a second engineering degree. If I graduate, I'll win about ten thousand dollars; if I don't, I lose them)

You learn a skill; then, perhaps, enjoy the final product or change it for other products or services.

I suspect that somewhere between Thursday's knife-sharpening and Dad's arrival, Sam mentioned something to Faye that "dad's probably not gonna like all this stuff you've shown me."

And Faye, being Faye, asked, "Hm. Does he like a certain kind of drink?"

"Well, he's always saying he likes something called an 'Old-Fashioned'."

"Hey, that's an easy one...."

  • Meh.

The demonstrated ability to pacify an angry father with a well mixed drink is a pretty good benefit I'd think.

You'd think he'd be grateful for the War Ladle, given how far behind his shop is in the arms race.

Nah, I think they're hiding their weapons.  After all, what was that thing that could spontaneously combust?  You know, they brought it up when we first saw the Secret Bakery.
