Hi, um, I'm new to the whole indie rock scene, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me? I was hoping something not too hardcore, something a 14 year old girl that likes Jpop would enjoy. Please don't come on here saying, " OHH EMM GEE! Why are you here if you don't know about indie rock! " because you don't have to be into the indie thing to enjoy this comic.

Ok, I read that. I think I would like AC Newman because I'm a fan of pop, but I'd need more of an opinion before I go out and buy a record, for I am in sort supply of money as of late.

haha my opinion is terribly biased.
If someone suggests a band to me, i download a song or two to check out what they're like, and if i like it, i buy it.

Here's a few suggestions
Modest Mouse-Very popular fave for the kids these days, start with newest album Good News For People Who Like Bad News. If you like this work your way back some of the pre Everyhting and All of His Parlor Tricks albums you proably wouldn't like though.
Built To Spill-Spacy Sleepy rock and roll very personal songs
Elliot Smith-Paul Simonish folk stuff, with a touvh of fuzz and spacy tunes as well, I recommend Figure 8 as your first purchase

I second the vote for New Pornographers - both albums ("Electric Version" and "Mass Romantic") are good happy pop music. I'm recommending "Electric Version" though, on account of it being catchier, if you're into that.

For Elliot Smith, I'd definitely suggest "Xo" over "Figure 8". Definitely not "From a Basement on the Hill" though.

Belle & Sebastian's newest album ("Dear Catastrophe Waitress") might be to your tastes as well.

You're in luck - there's more and more "indie pop" music out there (people at college told me that was an oxymoron... well, NOW who's laughing? [mwahahahaha, the fools, etc.])

I personally enjoy The Decemberists and modest mouse. But then i found out that modest mouse sold out. This greatly upsets me. I would also recomend the Harlots.

i have to say i actually like figure 8 more the xo.

and uh, modest mouse signed to a major label something along the lines...four to five years ago at least. do you have a job? go to school? is wanting to be compensated for work you do selling out? or working hard at tests and exams for a better grade selling out?

seriously let's just kill this selling out crap right here. it just leads to locked threads and angry jeph and angry moderators.

Think you could end up liking all the bands above if you gave them a shot and you should. Maybe went beyond indie rock with that list but they are still great bands.

What he said though add in Flaming lips, Wilco, My Brand New Favorite Band, and Iron & Wine.

It's not really indie but I like Franz Ferdinand; many of the people I talk to think that band is over blown though.

http://www.morrmusic.com/">the morr label is good for german electropop. a lot of it is pretty catchy... top picks would be styrofoam, ms. john soda, lali puna. there's streaming song samples on the site; it's all in flash. hell, on my slow loading computer, I think it's the fastest media website I have ever opened.

Múm is also a good one -- icelandic, but not entirely like Björk.. they have childlike voices and it is cute.. sort've like a lot o' jpop :D

Belle & Sebastian works (it's what I started with -- after I finally purchased indie music; not heard.. back in '00)... really, I wouldn't go for their latest though. Tigermilk or Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant.. those are my favs. on an 'as a whole' level.

Cocteau Twins.. well, they aren't *really* indie.. more like 80s / 90s shoegazer, but they were a good step up from jpop. hell, even Faye Wong (who did a song on an FF sndtrk) covered a C.T. song. they haven't done a bad song ever.

Mice Parade - Obrigado Saudade. o' course, maybe that's too 'hardcore', but it reminded me of japanese stuff and is pretty cool in an experimental way.

Also, I've gotta say that Mates of State is only good for one or two songs at once; a whole album is gag worthy... sorry to say -- of course, maybe that's not an "unbiased opinion". a friend of mine was going to open for them, but decided not to since their music wasn't the type they wanted to be associated with.

and from there allmusic.com is your friend. dont necessarily trust their ratings, but it's a good way to find a lot of new music.

I'd say there's a pretty big gap between bands like TV on the Radio or Cocteau Twins and J-Pop. This shouldn't stop you from listening to them anyway.

In my experience, people don't hear a totally new genre and go "WOW THAT'S TEH AWESOME!!1" the first time they hear it. Personally, I have to transition, which requires finding a band with some songs that are more like what I'm used to before diving in.

I don't know much about J-Pop, so I must admit that most of my suggestions were just more well-known indie pop bands.

...Which reduces the chance I'll ever enjoy Black Metal to about zero.

Yeah, I kept that in mind when I made my suggestions sort've -- well, some were just continuing on with stuff already mentioned, but... yeaaah...

I have listened to jpop though... well, the stuff on anime sndtrks plus stuff like Gackt and Ayumi Hamasaki if those count (also Luna Sea for jrock which ROCKS! ..in case no one has heard of them).... I just happened to notice they have a lot o' electronics and do remixes, so I mentioned electronic type stuff for the most part....

Of course, I have mixed both jpop and indie together on mixes, so it didn't seem that big of a jump....

Weeeelll, not entirely sure what Indie Rock is per-se, genres are always a bit subjective, but never mind, someone mentioned Idlewild, so I'll thrown in Biffy Clyro. Radiohead, Feeder, Snow Patrol, Elbow and Interpol could all possibly be said to have indie connections and are well worth a listen.

Your best IMO, is to find a shotucast station or soemthing (assuming you ahve broadband) and find out what badns you like from that. I'm sure theres a site somewhere that traces musical connections between band, you click on one and can see whos connected, that might of some worth. Aduisoscrobbler is also worth a look, it reccomends you music based on what you listen to and signing up to a group will often give you some ideas.

You'd definitely like the bubbly "melodion" (which is a weird cross between an accordion and a flute, it seems) sounds of The New Pornographers (not to mention everything else about them), especially their album Electric Version. It's ridiculously catchy and bubbly and upbeat yet manages to stay COMPLETELY EXCELLENT throughout.

A.C. Newman is also great but not quite as bright as the New Pornographers.

From there, I'd consider moving to these:

The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair when we're Gone?
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (lots of Japanese influences in the music and themes)
Pretty Girls Make Graves - Good Health (it's not really indie but it's bubbly and punchy)

See how that goes for you.
