Frankly, it reminded me too much of Rayman.

Yeah, that's pretty much Rayman.

The art wasn't that bad. Dated, but I've seen worse. It's the dialogue that gets me. The first few games were kinda wordy I guess, but it wasn't usually outright bad.

I'll hold off judgment until I get my hands on it.

Yeah, the third was pretty alright, although I would agree that there were some signs that the end was nigh. I still had fun though, and at the time I was still very open to a sequel, particularly since the second game's ending was so vague. I like the first two better, but that's hardly an insult.

I won't go judging the game from a minute and a half trailer. I'll certainly buy the first episode and decide from there what I think.

Personally, I was more excited by the news that they're remaking the original. That is what I'm seriously looking forward to. (Just so long as they don't mess with the music too much. The tune from the SCUMM Bar is one of my favourite things ever.)

I'm reserving judgment. The new Sam and Max games from a while back were great!

I thought the LeChuck animations were... offputting.  But the Sam and Max short episodes were pretty good and largely true to that series.  I'll give these a shot (Escape from Monkey Island was okay, but their insistence on 3D detracted).

Fun fact:

The remake of Monkey Island actually has the option to play the original game on the fly. Like, in the middle of the game, press a button, suddenly you're playing the original. Press it again: back to the remake!

So cool.

I don't get why they are doing this either.

The thing that was great about the first two Monkey Island games was....well, everything. Thus, if you change anything you will inevitably detract from the experience.
The idea that the early Monkey Island games are perfect is a bit silly. I absolutely adore them, but I'm all for the addition of some modern-day polish, improved graphics and fully voiced dialogue.

Fully voiced dialogue is not always an upgrade. Hell, I've cited the Monkey Island games as a perfect example of how voice acting isn't well suited for every project in threads other than this one. The dialogue has always been verbose and gleefully goofy. You need to be extremely careful with dialogue like that and even a mediocre voice acting job can make the whole thing come across as painfully forced. Quite simply, there's no way you're going to convince me that the writing of Monkey Island 1 wouldn't have to go through a fair bit of adaptation make the thing enjoyable in other formats. And once you change the writing around I suddenly become a bit at a loss as to why the heck someone like me who has played the original should really be excited about a remake to begin with.

See, one of the things I love about the medium is that it's the only medium where remakes can, in general, be a good idea. I offer Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Mega Man: Powered Up, Metroid: Zero Mission, Ultimate Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Street Fighter 2 HD, and probably several others. With the exception of SF2HD(which was just a lovingly hand-drawn HD graphical update to SF2) they all made the games deeper and more playable in addition to shinier graphics. They were good games, not just good remakes, helped along by the fact that the core, original games were good games also.

See, the thing here though is that I don't particularly like adventure games. Luckily, some of the Lucas Arts games managed to charm me but so far I've been consistently disappointed with Monkey Island's voice acting since it was introduced into the series. My worries lay completely in terms of presentation and most importantly writing.

Is the voice acting for the MI games really that unpopular? I've always felt that Dominic Armato and Earl Boen (Guybrush and LeChuck, respectively) were among the best things to happen to the series. Heck, MI3 is my favorite largely because of the extra comedic dimension the voices add.

For every moment that I thought it added there were two moments where I thought "That was so dumb that I suspect no VA could have made that work."

Anyway, I think voice acting is pretty neat and that there are great voice actors out there. I just think that MI1&2 were written in a specific way for a specific form of delivery and that they were very, very good. It is entirely possible that new MI games could be adapted to the spoken word and that the products will be excellent. I just don't think MI1&2 would necessarily have been better simply because you could hear it rather than read it.

Short gameplay clip (http://kotaku.com/5306270/tales-of-monkey-island-+-not-one-of-those-wet-bones)

Other than LeChuck's "Harr harr harr", I like it. The humour is there, and Guybrush still feels seems very much like Guybrush.

Good news, everyone! It's totally awesome. Not that I'm biased at all or anything.

Just finished the first chapter and I would like to agree that it is, indeed, totally awesome. It feels like a Monkey Island game (and a good one, at that) which is the main concern I had before playing it.

The remake is totally sweet, and this is coming from someone whose first memories include playing the original.

My only objection to the remake was the inclusion of a hint button. The whole point of adventure games is to drive you 'round the bend trying to figure things out. Having the solution right there is just a waste.

Also, it's probably a bad sign that I haven't even bothered finishing Siege of Spinner Cay. I just... don't want to. :(
