So Faye was overcoming fears when she was so assertive-seeming during the introduction scene in strip number 4? Interesting, and it makes sense. She still seems to have trouble. Someone (remind me who so I can give proper credit) pointed out that in the scene where we saw her cell phone's contact list there were precious few entries in it.

Yay for Assertive But Not Channeling Her Mom Hannelore!

No, Marten, she's going to make you watch all the uncensored yaoi with her, after which you'll start gouging out your eyes because THEY'RE BURNING.

Oh wait, you're the son of Veronica Vance. You'll live.

Maybe she's a Veronica Vance fangirl? I mean, Dora knowing she's into girls because of his mom is one thing, but Marten'd probably self-immolate if Marigold asked him to get her an autograph...

i dunno if it's just me, but marten looks like he is gaining weight lately. not in a bad way, but the past few strips he looks a bit less lanky.

Post by: akronnick on 03 Aug 2009, 06:26
That has a tendency to happen to dudes in their mid twenties.

(also Jeph's art keeps changing (nearly exclusively for the better (nested parenthesis RAWK!)) so it's probably a symptom of artistic improvement)

Okay, this was a cute strip. I just knew Hanners and Marigold would become bffs and it's cute how she's worried over her, making sure Faye is nice to her and all.

Also, poor Marten. I have a feeling he likes the abuse though. Maybe he's more like his mother than he ever thought. :O

i dunno if it's just me, but marten looks like he is gaining weight lately. not in a bad way, but the past few strips he looks a bit less lanky.
I've noticed that too. I kind of like more buff Marten, but it doesn't work well with all the scrawny indie boy jokes. But it probably is just Jeph and him improving his art.

i, too, have a feeling that it's kind of like how faye gets curvier and curvier as jeph's art improves. and didn't someone bring up in a previous threat that dora was getting a little less skin-and-bones in comics as of late?

Title: Re: WCT: Aug 3-7, 2009

It's probably a good thing that Hanners and Marigold are so socially inept. If they didn't have their crippling anxieties they'd be truly dangerous, especially teamed together.

A LOT more.

http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=9

He went to CoD, and #10 implies that he went there several times before #4, where Faye introduced herself. He still would have met Dora, but then again, he probably wouldn't have gone out with her.

I don't often make friends with the people who serve me coffee/food/alcohol/blahblahblah. I'd hardly call it a continuity error. If he hadn't become friends with Faye, Dora would be "the girl in the coffee shop".

Wasn't there a strip consensus about the ethics of betting on other people's mental health?

Without Faye, Dora might have pounced on Marten. Sara thought about asking him out, and Dora was just the type who'd go ahead and do it.

Dora's the designated mother hen for the night. Hanners is there to support Marigold, and Faye's being Faye. Which means Marten's dead meat, as usual.

Wednesday strip has been marinated in awesomesauce and topped with epic win.

Mother Hen is a good descritpion for Dora. i tend to look at her and Marten as Husband and wife, while Faye and Hanners are there daughters, all in a symbolic sense of course.

This comic reminds me of a bar in Vegas, just off Fremont St... Downtown Cocktail Room (or just "Downtown" cause that's all the sign says).  There's an alcove in the wall face underneath the sign, but it looks like it's just walls on either side and a pane of mirrored glass in the middle... like so:  |_________|  Turns out one of the walls is a door that you push open.  And the funniest part is it's SUPER dark in there and the mirrored glass is really a one-way window/mirror so you can watch people trying to figure out where the door is.  The bathrooms are worse.  The stall walls are one-way mirrors with no handles, so you have to figure out which mirror is the door... while you're inside doing your business, you can see right out into the main part of the bathroom... it's extremely disorienting especially when someone else comes in the bathroom.  You can see them but they can't see you.  Unless you're checking your cell phone while doing your business... any source of light and you're exposed.

This is the first comic in a while where the joke was completely unexpected and hilarious. Marigold might not look much different, but we can't read how she smells, can we?

Speaking of odd toilet doors: There was a toilet in a Berlin restaurant where the doors of all the stalls were made of clear glass. No mirroring anywhere, you can see through both sides. Only when you go inside, close the door, and turn the lock, the glass becomes white instantly. Now that is pretty cool.

Exactly. If you think of any slobby, unclean people you know, the noticeable uncleanliess is not necessarily visible. It's smell, and sometimes demeanour. Not necessarily something that can be drawn. Plus, it's not like Momo could clear up her acne in one shower.

Haha, that made me laugh. The world would be wonderful if everyone constantly made friends like in the QCniverse. We started with so few characters and mostly thanks to random introductions TADA! Here we are.

In other news, the people in the background of the last panel look really confused/scared/shocked. Why? Maybe because the girl with red hair behind Marten is flashing.

Or maybe they're watching Marigold struggling to open the bar door and wondering "WTF is her problem?" After all, unlike our main cast, they don't know that Marigold is socially inept-what would you think if you saw some woman acting like Marigold, and she was a total stranger?

It's you. As I understand it, the comics are posted basically in the middle of the night Jeph-time (What that means for you, I don't know, but here it means they come up at about 3-4 in the afternoon most days). So the comic for the 5th could be posted late at night on the 4th. The one that is up now (Marigold and the door) is for Wednesday the 5th. Jeph has done then next one in advance so that he can have the day off.

Ergh, it certainly isn't pleasant for much people. I'm surprised Marigold didn't run out!

I love fancy outfit waiter, I guess that explains why the bar had some when Marten and Angus ordered them the one night! Hanners and Faye's faces in the third panel is cute as fuuuck! I don't know why Faye's is cute, but it is.

I have social anxiety and the worst part is before. I'd be just like Marigold, except there would be more scenes of me walking away from the bar and around the block a few times, possibly all the way home to have a panic attack, then back and around the block a few times. When I finally went in and found the people I was meant to meet I'd be completely fine. Even with the cheering. I'd just laugh it off and be okay. Until afterwards, when I'd go into super analysing mode. Maybe. I'm getting better at stopping myself doing the social post-mortems. SA isn't just shyness to the max, it's certain bits of certain situations that trigger it, and you don't have to be shy as well.

There is finally a QC character I can relate to! After 5+ years of reading! Not that I couldn't relate to the others, but they were all so different from me.

Poor, poor Marigold. This is also one of the few times where I would call Faye a bitch. I normally don't think that (and frequently agree with her), but I think her comment was really uncalled for, and would definitely cause someone like me to just gtfo of the bar.

hahaha I like how Marigold is blushing in the last 2 bannels.  First because she orders a soda, and then because she doesnt know beers.  Its cool marigold, if you dont know just say  :-D .  Makes me think of when I took my younger brother into a bar about a week ago.  This was his first time in a bar and he was just sitting there. I went up to him (I had about 8 different drinks in me at the time) and said to him "Don't tell me your the only guy to go to a bar and not buy a drink!" handed him a $20 bill.  "What should I get?" he asked.  "Look at the different label tabs, or just get a guiness."  Being that I had one in my hand at the time (drink number 9), though probably not the best drink to start with.  Psh and after the hard work me and some people did to smuggle him into the bar(him 18, me 23).  haha.  But nah I didnt say it all angry like faye, mine was jokingly and motivational to get him to expereince a bar.

my shannenigans are cheeky and cute, fayes shannenigans are cruel and tragic.  Which doesnt make them shennenigans at all...EVIL shannenigans.

drink up marigold, and losen up.  Have fun and it wont be so bad.  :-D

I want to hit Faye too. I know she can be a meanie but I've never really considered her a bully. I've always seen her as someone who mocks those who can take it or who ask for it. She likes to push boundaries which I get. Even Hannelore was much more equipped to handle Faye's meanness than Marigold. She's clearly skittish and shy and it's vicious of her to be such a bitch to someone so ill-equipped to handle it. Plus it's like shooting fish in a barrel. It doesn't take any creativity at all to mock someone so damn... mockable. I want Hannelore to go off on Faye before the end of the night and give her back some of her own.

Oh man "fail ball sweat" oh you mean Kokanee :p I felt compelled comment. Basically even though I'm kinda tuned into the beer culture ie read the articles, watch
the other Micheal Jackson (Beer Hunter) reruns etc. I still get a little nervious (oh god my spelling again) at the beer store. The thing is I've found that even though
I should know better it usually comes down to being adventurous and trying all kinds of beers. That being said I recently bought a six of Central City's Red Racer IPA.
It was loaded with hops (says so on the can). I'm ashamed to say it but I didn't like it. The bizzare thing is the last IPA (Alexanders) i tryed was really good. So now i'm
really confused. Top that off my bud's pal was in town and he hands me this green can (forgot what brand) beer with lime in it. Tried that and was ok but it basically tasted like "fail ball sweat"  NOW WITH LIME !!! Great lets have 2 more of those. Next time I'm gonna stick with my usual Cream Ale but see if there's any brands I haven't tryed yet. Or better yet do eenie meanie minie moe in the German import section. That and hope its "yellow" (unfiltered wheat ale perhaps).
Title: Re: WCT: Aug 3-7, 2009
Post by: Mr_Rose on 07 Aug 2009, 07:23
Yeah, the thing with beers/ales/stouts is that while they fall into categories like IPA, individual brewers will have individual results based on their ingredients (up to and including the water they use) and experience. And with a category as generic as IPA (for India Pale Ale i.e. that which is hopped to fuck and back in order to not go stale on the boat to India [from England]) your mileage may vary by a lot - initially, IPA were literally beers with three or four times more hops than usual (hops are a natural antibiotic) but then returning soldiers and merchants found they had developed a taste for this previously report only gunk and then people started brewing with the final super-sour taste in mind and a whole new market was born.

Faye did that after Hannelore told her explicitly in advance not to be mean to Marigold, and right after Dora had dropped a broad hint that being mean to Marigold would be out of bounds.

hehe blue moon and dogfish are great! and I'll try different sam adams drinks anyday.  I find that if I go to a bar and I dont recognize any of the beers to ask the bartender and they generally can make a good suggestion for you.  Also going to the beer and bourbon festivals are a great way to try new beers...and whiskeys!  :-D

yeah come to think of it, my first drink in a bar wasnt a beer.  It was a red headed slut (good)  then an alien orgasm (lemony), and jager bombs.  I think I tried other stuff too that night but it was a blurr.  21st birthday rocked!  But I agree with you nichidani, start off with something fruity.  It looks to me like this is Marigold's first time in a bar.  I honestly wondered if she was of age in todays comic because of how scared and unsure she seemed, but then again its been awhile since my first bar expirence, it did remind me of my brother though haha.  Plus she does hace social anxiety.  I just hope she has fun.  Which is the name of the game!

*shrug* I don't see what's so insensitive about it. It wasn't mocking, it wasn't an accusation. If anything, Marigold needs people who treat her like a normal person, not walk on eggshells around her.

Ah, beer. I have the advantage of having a parental unit (and her boyfriend) and a brother who all have quite a bit of alcohol knowledge. So, when I'm out with friends I just drink something I know I like, and when with family I take their recommendations. Too easy. Plus, Mama lives three houses from a pub, so we're friendly with the owners and they make recommendations whenever I go to visit too.

In other news:

Lurking forever, posting for the first time... had to get in on the fancy beer discussion.  For those of you in the Boston, Mass. area, go to Cambridge and hit up John Harvard's -- the Oatmeal Stout is the best I've ever had.  A times square microbrew (can't remember the name, its on 43rd st in NYC) had the best Harvest Wheat I've ever had as well.  Highly recommend both those if you're a "coin-a-soor."  Also, for those in the Rochester, NY area, go to MacGreggor's Grill and Tap Room just south of Rochester in Henrietta.  There had to be at least 200 different beers on tap from all over the world.

I have family (a LARGE family)  in Walpole, next time I visit I'll head into the city and check out that place.  Thanks Jerift!

As can be seen in thursday's comic, Dora is already in Maternal Instincs mode over Marigold.  I think it was more of just a natural thing for her.

I do agree, Faye has seemed different latley, more cruel in a way, but thats probably from the emotional trama from Sven.  When was the last time she saw the doc?

are you serious? she had trouble just walking into a bar. there's a time for eggshells, and this is it.

Lots of people feel anxiety in various social situations. Constantly referring to their anxiety by treating them differently reinforces their beliefs that there is something to be afraid of. I'm not saying people shouldn't take her anxiety into consideration, but constantly fretting over every comment they make isn't the best way to put Marigold at ease; in my opinion at least.

Quote
And if there were a coral snake in the bar, Dora would have told Marigold, "watch out, there's a venomous snake". What a terrible person.

And if there were a venomous snake in the bar, everyone would run screaming. They wouldn't exactly be thinking of socializing with it. Then again, Dora's pseudo-maternal attitude towards characters she feels the need to "take under her wing" has always irked me.

When Marigold said she wanted mountain dew she did not mean ordinary, common folk mountain dew. I suspect she had this in mind: http://drmcninja.com/page.php?pageNum=24&issue=15 (http://drmcninja.com/page.php?pageNum=24&issue=15)
It is Faye and the rest who are ill informed.

Ach.  So awkward of a situation to be in.

I feel for Marigold.  This is probably the first time she has ever been in a bar before.  Or, you know, anywhere besides her apartment.

i think marigold is going to be fine. a little nervous at first, but fine.

faye has seemed a little more bitchy in recent comics, now that someone's (or, rather, a few people have) mentioned it. it doesn't seem to be done as lovingly anymore, either. faye's meanness has kind of evolved from a sort of sarcastic joking to genuine bitchiness.

Well, there is a proverb in my country which states "One who wants to eat a walnut, must be able to bite through the shell". If she can not handle this little pressure or whatever you might call it, perhaps the bar is not the right enviroment for her to be. ( Then, anyway in online games there is much more bullshitting and insults, so she likely has experience) Remember , as far as pastimes go getting drunk is not superior to wasting time online. Anyway i would say Dora is being overprotective (Hanners is just Hanners ...)

I agree, I think Faye needs to be put in her place again.  Then again I think it was lovingly with Marten because she had feelings for Marten.  After she has gotten used to Dora and Marten dating she was kinda with Sven. With Sven, Marten, and Angus (though less so) she has always had the joking sarcasm meaness.  Latley she has seemed more mean and Dora did mention something about it and commissioned the sculpture.

Thinking right now with the dialog, I think it wasnt Faye being mean now.  I think its one of those foot in mouth type of blurting out what you said without considering someones feelings.  I am sure everyone has done that a couple of times and landed in hot water.  She isnt purposley being mean to Marigold.  But hey lets wait till monday and see if she has lighten up yet.  Faye did say she has a hard time breaking the ice.

Look at how how Mountain Dew was typed/said in the third panel. It clearly wasn't a regular question, but an accusation/negative remark commonly seen in Bitchy-Faye. Dora clearly picked up on the fact that going to the bar itself was a big step for Marigold, and isn't letting Faye ruin what social progress could be made.

Over-analyzing characters whoooo.

Look, tone of voice could entirely determine whether Faye was just being jokey or whether she was being mean.  Since we can't actually hear it, we're just guessing.

I don't think she's being pressured into drinking. I mean first, everyone except Faye wouldn't even comment, and it seems more like a lack of knowledge of what to order. Before I went to uni I didn't really drink and had a similar reaction first time in a bar with strangers!

And I don't think Faye is necessarily mean. You could look at her as being clueless about other people's social habits as Marigold is about all theirs!

True enough - but (in context) Dora can hear it, and that provides us with some additional information. (Of course, it's debatable whether Dora interpreted it correctly....)

i really don't think it's that marigold doesn't want to drink, since she is mostly just embarrassed that she doesn't like (or know much about) beer. if she had no desire to drink alcohol, she would have said "i don't drink", and left it at that. and i doubt anyone would've said anything about it.

i mean, i don't much care for (or rather, i am not really knowledgeable about)  beer. but i enjoy the hell out of a stiff screwdriver or fruity girl alcoholic beverage, when i indulge. i feel that she may be more similar to my situation than a non-drinker who is peer pressured into drinking.

You bring up some great points and I totally agree!  If she didnt drink period she'd say so.  I think its just her out of her element and grabbing at something she is familiar/comfortable/used to.  And she just may not be too knowledgeable about beer/bourbon/mixed drinks.  Hmmm bullet bourbon mixed with mountain dew....I may have to try that, and we shall call it, the Marigold!  But honestly I prefer beer to mixed drinks.

Hey, that's not a bad idea. I have never mixed anything with Mountain Dew. I will have to rectify that.

I like beer and mixed drinks equally. Hell, I'll drink anything except Passion Pop.

Many years ago when I was around 10 or 12, there was a local Softdrink manufacture that made a cola drink called Rocola (or something like that), the flavour was quite unique.  They went out of business a couple or three decades back, but after they went out of business, a mate of mine and I discovered that if you mixed three quarters of a bottle of Coke and a quarter of a bottle of lemonade, you got the same flavour.
