Title: Show me your artwork!
Post by: ecstaticjoy on 30 Mar 2012, 21:21
Just wanted to share my artwork and see images of everyone else's art. I can't wait to see!

This is the most recent painting I've finished:

Not sure if this kind of graphic design counts but...

This is the layout I did for the physical CD we released a couple weeks ago. They came out really nice.

I've been meaning to post here for a RIDICULOUSLY LONG time (like...since I started posting back in 2010). So, this will be a bit of a photo dump.

I know you're hoping to move across the Atlantic, but are you planning to continue art as a means of income?  I ask specifically because I have a picture on my wall bought from the Compass Gallery in Glasgow, by someone who had just left the Glasgow College of Art, and we've considered others with similar provenance.

Of those above, I like the first best, but I'm not sure my wife would accept it...

I plan on selling artwork, yeah, but I'm a little scared of jumping into it. I've never sold anything before, I've not even exhibited outside of a school setting, and I don't really know where to begin. Stuff like deciding a price or figuring out the logistics of shipping is just so strange to me. If you're interested in buying something, I'm sure I'd be able to work it out though! And yes, it's not really everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's funny that most people I've shown these paintings to have pointed out the first one as their favourite, I must have done something right there.

That dog painting is really lovely, by the way.

Not sure if it's "art" per se, but I spent alot of time on it.  Essentially a backdrop for a few scenes.  probably recurring.  needs a bit more detail maybe.

I like that the view from your window is of fruit or vegetables ripening on racks; I would find that very relaxing compared with the suburban back road I get to look at.

They are actually just trees/plants and other nature, planting some vegetables would be a good idea though. And indeed it is a very relaxing/healthy view, pretty odd for a house in the city's downtown (and with no neighbours either).

My college roommate's wife is an artist, and she likened to selling her first piece to selling one of her children.  When we visited them a couple of years ago, however, she was selling artwork like crazy.

Your stuff is worth it, so start selling!

Haha thanks! I will definitely try selling at my year's degree show in June, can't really do anything before that since everything I do has to be kept for evaluation for now. The good thing is that the degree show is perfect for getting publicity, there's even a VIP night before the actual opening where potential buyers go around looking at the graduating students' work, and that's when most stuff gets sold. A friend of mine who graduated last year sold every single one of her paintings, and she told me British Airways bought the two biggest ones. A couple student works even went to the Saatchi collection, so that's probably the best opportunity I'll have in the foreseeable future.

Anyway, I don't have any new paintings I want to share at the moment since I'm mostly focusing on the essay I need to write, but here are some more works from last year:

I think I want to paint less 'cutesy' from now on though, while I like the pastel colours well enough I feel like the tonal variation is suffering a bit, I definitely need a wider range of light/dark contrasts for it not to get too boring. They're pretty, but not very interesting.

Metope, I love your paintings, is it safe to assume that you're a fan of people like Georg Baselitz, Anselm Kiefer, Cy Twombly and the like? You've got some great mark making skills in there, I'd quite like to see them irl to see how textured they are.
Title: Re: Show me your artwork!
Post by: Metope on 04 Apr 2014, 11:55
Thank you! My paintings are really flat and hardly any texture at all, so I'm not sure how you're seeing those artists in there, but I'll take it. I mean, I don't have anything against Kiefer, but as far as paintings go, he's probably as far away from me as you could get, visually and texturally... Twombly is great, but also completely different since his work is really spontaneous and quick while I like to plan it out and take my time. Baselitz is just a dick (http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/whats-the-biggest-problem-with-women-artists-none-of-them-can-actually-paint-says-georg-baselitz-8484019.html) and his paintings suck too.

Well I didn't know that about Baselitz, and that article has ruined my opinion of him, as well as ruining my day, what a fucking tool.

I mainly see the artists through the use of colours (not Kiefer though) and the use of paint, it's expressive, it looks physical, and it has a depth of movement. It's a good thing in my eyes anyway. Have you experimented with texture before?

I wrote a simulator in POV-Ray that can take an arbitrary position of Newton's Cradle and solve for the position at later times. It's not the most accurate, since it assumes only two-body interactions and there's no dissipation of energy. Not much of an accomplishment, but it occupied a boring day in which I was the only person who showed up at the lab.

So, anyway, pretty picture:

First, an explanation.

I have synesthesia, meaning my senses are cross-wired. I hear music, it has color, it has motion, it has shape. So, I take advantage of that, and draw songs, albums, etc.

My avatar is one of these; it's how the song Inspector of Inspectors by Driftless Pony Club looks to me, pastel and prismacolor

These are pretty big, so I'll put what I post in spoilers with just the song title so you can decide if you want to see

That's a really interesting way to create art and make use of your synesthesia. I particularly like Crazy Train, maybe because it's in charcoal I can easily follow the movement in it and the swooping lines next to the straight ones looks neat. Sweet Child Of Mine has nice contrast with the colour and black/grey.

Hi folks, not quite the right thread for this but may as well have a bash. My girlfriend wants to start selling her work, or prints of it, online, and isn't really sure where to start. She thinks she should be using an etsy account(?), and she wanted to know with prints whether when selling them they'd need to always be framed, and if so what kind of frame she should be going with.

Could someone please halps?
Title: Re: Show me your artwork!
Post by: lepetitfromage on 08 Mar 2015, 17:32
It might work in her favor to offer frames but make them optional. Does she know how to mat? Just matting them might amp up the professional look without adding significant costs. If she doesn't know how, I'm pretty sure most craft stores offer standard pre-cut ones. If she does decide to offer frames, I've always been partial to the minimalist frames that really let the art speak for itself.

Kind of like this one:
http://www.michaels.com/studio-decor-basics-metro-frame/M10137858.html?dwvar_M10137858_color=Black#q=Metro+frame&start=1

She might want to look into creating her own website and selling on there as well. I've heard from some people on Etsy that there have been some changes being made that don't sit well with sellers.

Ditto what lepetitfromage said. All of it.

What she might think is the perfect frame/mat combo might not be what someone else likes. I'd also suggest looking into other sellers, since there are other options out there that might work better for what she's trying to do (or that might have better fee structures, etc.).

I started on a commission for my best friend today! She bought an apartment with her boyfriend last year and they have a huge, empty wall to fill so I thought I'd make them a large painting. This is just the rough starting point of course, but I have a good feeling about it.

Hey, ChaosP, you may have said before, but do images sound like things, or is it strictly one way?

Trying to boost attention to me comic, so I've got into the vote incentive game. Obviously, these aren't the full images, and neither is an active incentive, atm. They'll be first and second week of next month if you really want to see the whole thing, but I don't actually expect anyone to follow up from here.

I'm just absurdly happy with these. I'm glad I don't really need both arms to do art because I'm likely to break one patting myself on the back.

ReindeerFlotilla, it's just the one way, sound -> colors. A bit of sound->motion, too, helps with configuring spaces, some

Pandering isn't exactly my proudest choice there, but it's been very effective.

The total traffic response has been about half of what I spent good money generating through ads on gunnerkrieg, and a 1/3 of QC. Infinitely cheaper.

Sound = motion?

Sounds dizzying. Actually, I almost understand that. I've always scored well on people's estimates of aesthetics and visual construction, but I hardly see pictures in my head. Sometimes a flash of something. I feel them. Like a sense of space filling, or movement. But I don't think I've ever just looked at something and felt that, so I wouldn't consider it any kind of sensory cross over. Rather just the way I do imagery.

Rear naked choke?
Title: Re: Show me your artwork!
Post by: ReindeerFlotilla on 09 Aug 2015, 00:25
Exactly!

We'll no, but sorta. I have this idea. I'm not sharing. But the foundation of the idea is a modified tarot deck. Since I have the characters, I figured I'd make the cards. So this is the core image for the Lovers card. I decided to got light on core symbolism, because I'm not sure what the card means yet. But I do have the core concept that the cards are their own antonyms. So the card can be read to be good or bad, depending on how it is interacting, and where it crops up. So, I tried to set up an image that can be read as tender or domineering. A connection or a struggle. It depends on, hopefully, what you want to see in the image.

I don't actually know what I would use it for. The weapons are based on some stuff from some sketches I did a while back (the original sketch for the first one, the C-Rifle, is like four years old; the Dawnbreaker was sketched a few months ago). I was just aiming to create.

Looking at it now, I need to fix up the glowspots on the helmet, they look slightly obnoxious. Narrow them in just a tiny bit, a teense closer together, yeah
(the rifle was scaled, cubic interpolation, then re-sprited on a new layer with the resize half-visible beneath it. the helmet actually had to get scaled down a bit and i didn't correct the glowspots afterwards)

Is this rendered? From 3D models?

Anyhow, this looks amazing! The facial expressions are well beyond the 'uncanny valley'-look of some other rendered comics I've seen.

Title: Re: Show me your artwork!
Post by: ReindeerFlotilla on 05 Nov 2015, 11:46
Thank you! Yup, all 3D. Aside from resizing the images to fit the comic template, there's no post work at all. Render, resize, add text. Pretty much the whole workflow.

Facial expressions are hard. So I cheat.

I do all the hard work, but I start from an easier place. Most people doing this kind of art use realistic human models. I do mine in cartoon style. Beyond that, I try to avoid symmetric expressions.

There's a lot of work that goes into an expression and looking over my whole comic, I can see places where I hadn't quite figured out how to do it and others where I clearly phoned it in.

But the biggest cheat is the 'toon rendering. I think that does more to offset the uncanny valley than anything else. Not to apply false humility and say my other efforts don't help. But the presentation starts by signaling "this is not real." Getting the mind away from looking for realism probably takes most of the uncanny right out.

I consider that the first piece of art I'm still (mostly) proud of, so, five years later, when it came to trying to produce enough work to fill a portfolio, I chose this general piece to re-work.

I didn't draw it exactly the same, because that would be boring, and I do believe I've improved in at least a few areas. I did a bit of embellishing, adding design elements, directions, highlights using metallic sharpies:

I don't really think of this as "art", but it's the first sketch I made with the Wacom tablet now that it's working, and the first time I've really used Krita.  I spent about 1/2 an hour, maybe 40 minutes on it, starting off in symmetry mode (I was reading a tutorial on Krita, and got distracted on the first item) for the line art, and then playing around with different art and texture brushes.

Started 3D modelling with Daz3D in January, which became handy after getting put into lockdown. So here's a few images I've worked on the last few months.

A tribute to one of my favourite comic panels of all time.

I still sometimes play an RPG and this is a character I usually like to play.

So years ago, I wrong a backstory for my main character in Dark Heresy. This a partial remake of one of his key moments.
(click to show/hide)

The last couple of years, I've been working on a superhero setting for Mutants and Masterminds, wanted to do an image like it was taken from security footage.
(click to show/hide)

One of the established heroes that would populate that setting, a magic user going by Reliquary.

Another of the established heroes, a power armoured hero known as Vanguard.

EDIT: Upon looking up paleoart to try to get a less bland botmode, I found out that I've been referring to this critter by its family not its genus. Still a Batrachognathin,  but also a Sinomacrops bondei.

[Of course I get this shot before realizing I needed to tweak the new phone's photo settings.]
