Blind Pilot - Three Rounds And A Sound.

This album is graceful and heart warming, I strongly advise getting this if you like acoustic songs.

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/download.php?tgzn1dm2ino

Quote
It’s funny how the simplest things can be the best things.  I know I’m getting into cliché territory, but bear with me for a moment. Some of my favorite memories are simple things: picking blackberries in the creek with my best friend when I was little; spending summers in the hammock in my backyard, endlessly reading Katharine Hepburn biographies; sitting next to someone I care for very much, just doing nothing in particular.

3 Rounds and a Sound, Blind Pilot’s first album, reminds me of those simple moments.  The acoustic guitars, effortless horn parts, and Ben Gibbard-like hopeful singing is beautiful in its simplicity.  This idea is something that my sweet voice-idol, Jeremy Messersmith, has figured out to a T.  Blind Pilot's Israel Nebeker and Ryan Dobrowski are well on their way.

The album builds, beginning with easy, pleading vocals and strumming guitars and then moving into more driving, drum heavy, minor key sorts of things, with a female voice (Kati Claborn) helping out every so often.  There is a singer/songwriter quality that comes forth, but the music is just too big for that to be all that’s happening.  It’s probably from the strong sense of stories being told on most of the songs.  You don’t even have to listen to the lyrics to get the idea that there is a tale being sung. Blind Pilot is a band that clearly cares deeply for their craft, and what they give their audience is lovely, heartfelt music.

White Hinterland - Phylactery Factory.

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/download.php?wg0nvznmkdi

This is just adorable.

Quote
White Hinterland is a simple name change for Massachusetts’ Casey Deinel, who released Wind-Up Canary in 2006. Dienel made a name with whimsical piano-based compositions, and although Wind-Up Canary did feature light accompaniment, Phylactery Factory is a denser, more elaborate project. But piano remains at the root of things, contributing on various levels from bass rhythm to supportive melody to all-out avant-noise.

“The Destruction of the Art Deco House” begins the record with subtle synth that sounds like an orchestra tuning up to feedback. Acoustic bass and light drums swing in, evoking a strange lounge vibe, like a folksy, feminine Tom Waits. With an alternately challenging (and yeah, beautiful) voice, Deinel’s vocal style is slinky, going where it pleases, warbling often, not breaching the perimeters of Joanna Newsom, but close to the vowel-laden sound of Björk with the variable amplitude of Billie Holiday. In addition, “Napoleon at Waterloo” hears her taking a stab at the French chanteuse form. If there is a problem with her voice, it’s that the vowel-heavy sound too often obscures the lyrics, which is a shame. There is some solid poetry on this work.

I didn't even know Iron and Wine were planning anything new (I'm guessing you're talking about the raretracks/b-sides?)

Either way, Iron and Wine is always a good thing... I might upload some of their bootlegs I've got later.

It's a collection of unreleased material from over the years. 2 discs. The first is Sam Beam's home recordings of such tracks as "Such Great Heights," the other is studio songs, some of which were included as Shepherd's Dog bonus tracks ("Arms of a Thief," "Serpent Charmer").

Thanks for the clarification- I've actually been listening to it since the instant it was linked to in the thread- I love it a lot.

I'll have the bootlegs up whenever med!afire decides to work again ( that is, if "live at the 930 club" and "Messiah College" concerts haven't been posted before... I better check that real quick.)

i've got four recently-bought albums i'm considering upping once media-dire un-tards itself:

husker du - "flip your wig" and "zen arcade"
shorebirds - "it's gonna get ugly" (features ex-members of latterman and jawbreaker, and i picked up the european-only cd-version, so it's not a shitty vinyl rip)
biffy clyro - "vertigo of bliss" (a quick search tells me it's only album of theirs yet to be upped, and it's probably the best)

let me know if there's any kind of huge yay or nay on any of these...

I could only get the Messiah College bootleg to a decent size. If you guys want the 930 Club concert (he performs a pretty long set with Calexico if I remember right and good sound quality.) I'll probably have to put it up in three pieces but I don't mind if you don't. I can also give you guys the set list if that adds any incentive.

Anyway, here is Iron and Wine (mostly solo set) from Messiah College.
Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?iox1utmomtw

The first 4 or 5 songs have really tight song edits with the song ending the last chord is strummed (doesn't all for breath/ambiance or crowd interaction) but as the bootleg goes on, you get the full songs and some really neat crowd interaction from Sam.

Hacride - Lazarus

quote from what I said in the Top Albums of 09 thread because I'm lazy:
Quote
I've come to one conclusion: it's one of the strongest releases any French metal band has put out in a long time. *coughgojiracough* Catchier, stronger songwriting, much more dynamic, more technical while still retaining a high amount of coherence throughout. A possible contender for my top albums of this year.

The Librarians released one album of thoroughly enjoyable pop-punk/power pop on a small label in Berkeley in 2002. Apparently they put on a really good show.  Sounds kinda Elvis Costello-y, lyrics are smart alecky and fun and basically this record is really good for slacking off and doing nothing in particular.

Yea, I'm always down for new hip-hop.

On a completely different note, here's Mad Season's Above.  Since most of you have probably never heard of them, they're a band from the mid-90's, with the mid-90's sound.    It features Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) on vocals, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) on guitar, Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees), and some dude on bass.  Mark Lanegan also provides a few backing vocals.  I highly recommend it.  I'm also pretty sure this was my first upload way way way back when this thread started, but its long deleted now.

Asher Roth - The Greenhouse Effect (2008)
Okay so i know this cat is all over MTV now, but before he got super big, he put out this awesome mixtape to promote his up and coming rise. I believe all the songs are done over other beats but Asher fucking tears some  of those beats up. It's pretty sick for a white college kid. I mean this kid has Jay-z, Akon, DJ Drama and Dj Cannon on his nuts so you know he must be something special.

Part 2

Here's an album I found on a random blog a while back, but it's good enough to share here.  The band is Steel Train (I haven't heard anything else by them, but i think they do have a CD or two out).  The album is titled 1969, because its an EP of 6 or 7 covers of popular songs from 1969.  This isn't just some band covering old songs, I think they do a great job, and with great range (Jackson 5, Beatles, Bob Marley).  Definitely worth checking out.

In honour of the Steel Train EP linked above i give you a link to my favourite Steel Train album:

Steel Train - Trampoline

Code:
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?dmg5tndwy34

Review snippets from emotionalpunk.com
Quote
When I was chosen to review Steel Train’s sophomore album “Trampoline” I was less than enthralled. I do not know whether to blame my implicit or episodic memory but something was making me want to dislike this album before I even placed it in my computer. However, upon a throughout listen I have to say first impressions can not only be deceiving they can be down right 100% wrong!

Steel Train definitely takes you on a fun, eclectic ride. “Trampoline” has raised the bar for not only the band’s personal mastery of their craft but for the genre as well. The musicianship on this album is perhaps what your mp3 player has been missing lately. Moreover, the reflective storytelling ability of Jack Antonoff should be cherished, or at bare minimum appreciated by anyone who claims to “love music”.

They have also just finished recording the new album and i am currently eagerly waiting for a leak of it.

EDIT: They also have the album Twighlight Tales From The Prairies of the Sun and the EP For You My Dear but go find them yourselves.

So, here's two of the albums I mentioned a few posts ago (FINALLY!)...

Hüsker Dü - "Flip Your Wig"

EDIT: apparently "Flexible Flyer" is corrupt, so here's a separate upload of that:

Pretty amazing that this was the second full-length album that the band released in 1985 (the other being "New Day Rising"), even more so when you realise it arrived only a year after their double-album "Zen Arcade."  This is probably, song-for-song, the most consistently enjoyable and accessible Hüsker Dü album I've heard so far (bearing in mind I've yet to hear "New Day Rising," or the EPs that preceded "Zen Arcade"), if you ignore the random filler track "The Baby Song."  This was their last recording for the SST label before moving to a major label for their final two albums, and it benefits from a slightly better production job and poppier songwriting than before.  Seriously good album!

Biffy Clyro - "The Vertigo of Bliss"

EDIT: Apparently "Toys Toys Toys Choke Toys Toys Toys" is corrupt, so here's a separate upload of that:

This, Biffy Clyro's second album, and the only of theirs yet to be uploaded in this thread (until now) is, for me at least, their equal best album (along with it's follow-up "Infinity Land").  Imagine a weird cross-breeding of Fugazi, Helmet, Foo Fighters, with some indie-pop and early-Weezer leanings, and a strong experimental/progressive streak.  If you're familiar with the band through their most recent effort (the excellent, but very different-to-their-older-stuff "Puzzle"), this is definitely worth checking out, regardless of whether you enjoyed "Puzzle" or not.

Whut. Are you saying you haven't heard Metal Circus? Oh geez that is a problem.

Edit: was gonna post my own, but it's been upped before and the link from earlier in this thread is actually still good. But seriously, it is so good. Get this one.

i got "warehouse - songs and stories" first (which i've since heard is their worst, although i think it's pretty good), but it took me ages to really get into it, and i've only recently started working back through the other stuff.  "new day rising" is next on my list, although i definitely wanna get "metal circus" soon, especially to hear the original version of "diane" (i've only heard Therapy?'s cello-heavy (and yet awesome) cover).

i discovered this amazing band in spain back in 2004. they're currently working on a new album that should be out sometime this year. if you like bell and sebastian or stereolab, i think you'll love them. also... even though i discovered them in spain, the songs are in english.
