Really? I think the one I had on my first day (some 17 years ago) was about the same size and it wasn't a particularly big one. Also: Holy shit, it's been 17 years since I entered school? Where did all the time go?

Animals.

A lot of Germany is overrun by stray kittens, hamsters, ocelots, stoats etc. On the first day of school, children are sent out into the nearby area to collect as many as they can fit in a cone. It marks the entry into local community which educates them and in return they help by catching little animals.

At the end of the day all the animals are released in the school's great hall and the children get to pet them and feed them bits of meat and salad. The next day all the animals will be used to make maths and science cuter to learn. It's proven to be instrumental as to why Germans are typically good at these subjects.

I have known about this for a while now. I make one for my girlfriend and my kid every year. That is completely wrong and it flies in the face of tradition, etc, but I 'm dutch so I don't care. They're fun, though. Would recommend.

From what google told me it's the Australian equivalent of the German BAFöG, a state subsidised student loan or something.

Gav, it's basically our equivalent of state-supported student loans. In my case, I'll be paying them off for a long time and I only did Arts - a medicine or law degree at some Aussie universities now costs upward of $100K

The really awesome thing is, the politicians who put HECS in place didn't have to pay a cent for their degrees.
