I finally watched Wolf Children. It was cute and a little heartwrenching, even if the animation was wonky at times.

The prospect of sitting through that movie again makes my upcoming day of work seem downright pleasant. So it has that going for it, I suppose.

Confession: I've only seen the first hour, but I finish everything I watch, so...yeah.

In that hour, I don't think I laughed once. Nothing was even accidentally funny. Vince Vaughn should have retired after Wedding Crashers.

I'll be damned if I can find it but I distinctly remember Vaughn doing an interview soon after Delivery Man was universally panned. He said he wanted to stop doing frat-pack comedy crap.  Because he's been good, at times. Just not recently. And now he knows this, he might improve the next time we inevitably see him on screen.

Saw Muppets Most Wanted today. Liked it a decent amount, although it wasn't as good as the last one. Although this song? Easily the best part of either movie, IMO.

So I've watched a shitload of movies lately.

Anchorman 2 - just... not very funny. And at least half an hour too long.
(click to show/hide)

The Internship - again, just wasn't very funny, although it makes Anchorman 2 look like Airplane. However, at least, unlike Delivery Man, it was fucking offensively terrible.

Eddie Murphy - Delirious - Alarmingly homophobic and anti-woman. Didn't care for it. Not sure I can enjoy anything Murphy's in any more.

Last Vegas - Kind of sweet, quite funny, entirely carried by a fantastic cast (not least Kevin Kline who is the most eminently likable actor in Hollywood)

American Reunion - Absolutely pointless, but enjoyable seeing the old gang all back together. Intermittently funny but puts into harsh relief how little we need sex comedies these days when the internet exists. If you want comedy, you watch a film. If you want sex, you go online.

That's My Boy - I fell asleep during the opening half hour, which included the classic 'hot teacher fucks underage boy, boy is hailed as a hero.' Admittedly the teacher does go to jail in the movie, but at no point is it indicated that that is the right option, it just happens in spite of it all. I did not regret falling asleep.

Hunger Games - Solid four out of five. Great concept, beautifully presented, nice little comment on modern television. Jennifer Lawrence is hot.

Hunger Games 2 - Basically the exact same as the first film, but a little darker, and I don't really see any problem with that. JENNIFER LAWRENCE IS SO HOT.

Django Unchained - It was a Tarantino movie. They're kind of... all the same, really. Lots of language. Lots of violence. Acres of easily cuttable scenes, including the majority of the closing half hour. Jonah Hill in a pointless comedy lynching scene (yes, really). I have no idea why people were concerned over the gore. It was hilariously, cartoonishly over the top from the outset, the only time it was shocking was when DiCaprio watches two black slaves beating each other to death in his parlour for his own entertainment. Has absolutely nothing to say about racism. Was reasonably entertaining but ultimately unnecessary.

I haven't seen the whole movie. But I have seen the comedic attempt at an attack on a caravan. The whole bit with the masks. It struck me as very funny. Also, I felt there was something there about the banality of evil. Such an overused phrase. But not, I felt, pointless.

I didn't say the scene wasn't funny. It was just the only funny scene in the movie.

And it isn't necessarily a bad thing but given the Oscar buzz and critical wankathon it received there was really nothing to it.

Forgot to say, I watched Amazing Spiderman. It's decent, good visual effects, but not especially interesting or original and in places, very confused (not confusing, confused). I am glad I didn't pay to see it at the cinema because I still much prefer the first Maguire movie even if Garfield is a vastly superior Peter Parker.

I think TAS made a bit more sense, in terms of story. Uncle Ben was so much more convincing this time around. I have love for the first two Maguire films but I think that the reboot films (assuming another trilogy) will eclipse it.

Can we get Emma Stone in a rain scene ala Kirsten Dunst?

I don't agree with that (as far as making story sense). What happened to him hunting for Uncle Ben's killer? Where'd that plotline go? Just kinda dropped off the map.

I do agree this was a much better Uncle Sheen. Er, Ben.

Just watched Odd Thomas today.

I didn't even know they'd made the movie, but I do like the series of books by Dean Koontz.  It stars Anton Yelchin, better known as Chekov in the new Star Trek storyline.

The movie was great in that it almost stayed in complete sync with the book (only a couple of things that didn't match up) and Yelchin really was believable as the title character.  Willem Dafoe takes a paycheck as the local chief of police, and does a decent job of it without overpowering the young 'uns that are actually the stars of the show.

I really really enjoyed the books, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the movie as well.

I only saw A Few Good Men a few years ago, but it is one of the films that made me realise that a celebrity may be a weirdo (not an asshole, a weirdo) but that doesn't mean their work isn't top notch. Cruise is oozing with charisma and magnetism in that film, he MAKES that film. Everyone else in it is good, but if you took Cruise out of it the picture would be far poorer.

I would lodge a disagreement. Cruise is excellent in AFGM, but Jack Nicholson OWNED that movie.

I think the picture is shit out of luck without either one of them. They both make the movie. Nicholson is absent for the majority of the central hour.

Despicable Me had the best theme tune. For a kid's film, it was pretty original, too. The sequel gets ridiculously corny and excessive, but eh. 4.5 stars for the first, 3.5 for the second  :-)

So I watched Grown Ups 2 (I was bored and wanted to fall asleep to something) and it is... frustrating.

I expected it to be a jokeless snorefest with nothing whatsoever going for it but it's actually worse than that because it is actually within a whisper of being watchable.

First of all, this thing is CRAMMED with talent. Sandler hasn't been good since the 90s and David Spade is the world's worst comedian, but Kevin James, Chris Rock, Steve Buscemi, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Taylor Lautner, Shaq(???), Salma Hayek, the woman who's getting married in Bridesmaids - there is so much talent here, and it means that somehow it actually avoids being completely terrible, scraping into two star territory. The jokes are mostly terrible, but the precious few that actually are good are given to people who are sharp enough to actually make them funny - most of the funny lines belong to Kevin James (it's a joke that makes absolutely no sense, but when he lets off an auto-inflate water raft from his fanny pack, while dressed as Meat Loaf, and sings 'like a raft outta hell' I was laughing for a while). Chris Rock also gets a couple of good lines which I can only presume are ad-libs ('No-one's even scared of black guys any more?').

There is basically no plot in the entire fucking movie, but what little plot there is involves an asshole frathouse who starts a rivalry with the main characters. This is where Taylor Lautner comes in and is so absolutely perfectly fucking cast that I'm kind of gutted he doesn't do this kind of thing more often. He was built up a lot of... what's the opposite of good will? Bad will I guess, from the Twilight saga and it makes him a perfect pretty boy villain, helped by the fact that he really is game for anything in the movie. Steve Austin is also perfect as Sandler's school bully (I think he might have been in the first one too?) and Shaq gets quite a few funny lines and sight gags.

The most frustrating jokes are the ones that are so close to being funny. Like when the guys go to a sexy car wash and it's all guys - the ensuing slow motion parody of sexy car washes could've been hilarious, had they not deliberately made it massively homophobic (oh and there's some transphobia thrown in there too, surrounding a genuinely gorgeous female bodybuilder who deserves better than to be treated like that but only has herself to blame for signing up to the movie).

It's just one big fat missed opportunity, but I'm willing to bet it made enough money that the studios don't give a fuck regardless. It's just a waste. A waste of time, of comic talent, of punchlines that were so close to being funny.

David Spade is not Dane Cook, so this is incorrect. :P

I just watched Amazing Spider-man 2 and I thought it was ok. I still enjoy the second Spider-man movie the most, but I definitely put it above Spider-man 3. It did suffer a little from too many villains, but it it used them a lot more conservatively then Spider-man 3 did. I mean:

Oh god I fucking hated Funny People. Well, I hated the second half of it, at least, and overall it's mediocre at best. The fact that it followed Knocked Up (which I loved) did not help matters at all.

I saw Spidey 2 today, liked it more than I thought I would.

I just rewatched the original Star Wars trilogy. I would pay good money for the ORIGINAL movies on DVD, none of the Lucas digital add ons.

Okay, so let's see - Brick Mansions - does anyone else think that Luc Besson keeps making District 13 over and over again, with a bigger budget?  Meh, it was okay.

Watched Monuments Men - that was fun.  I don't know how much is actual history, but I am interested now in finding out more, so I guess it was good for that.

I, Frankenstein.  Actionfest featuring gargoyles and demons - but I actually enjoyed it.  That was a lot of fun.

That's about it for now.

Let that sink in for a moment.

The Other Woman. Surprisingly feel good. Doesn't have many big laughs till after the halfway point but I'm really glad I saw it.
