Movies That Deserve A Remake
« on: 06 Nov 2013, 13:41 »

Particularly the old classics. The one I have in mind is Mad Max. I think it would make an excellent movie with modern techniques. I just wouldn't change the style too much. Mel Gibson could even do his old role despite his accent being gone.

I do believe there is a Mad Max Reboot in the works.

X-Men. They did a decent reboot with First Class, then they decided they'd tie it all in the the previous three or four films, then maybe just a little. I'm done with Wolver-Jackson, Halle Berry, Captain Picard and Gandalf.

EDIT; I'm talking about a reboot, obviously, not a remake. Slighty off-topic  :police:

I can't think of any remakes that have been better than the originals. The issue I guess is that it's never films that need improving that get remade, it's the ones that are memorable and already good. Which is pointless, why fix something that was never broken?

Also First Class wasn't a reboot, it's a prequel. And the new X-Men film is using a well known and popular storyline from the comics to bring the first three films and the new entries together, which is a lot more interesting than a reboot.

To be honest, I would give up every remake and every reboot if it meant we got to see something original.

all remakes of good films, and widely considered superior to the originals

The remake of True Grit was NOT superior to the original. It didn't have close to the same feel, acting was terrible and it was poorly received by the intended audience.

Keeping in mind that art is subjective and opinion varies from person to person, the remake of True Grit was waaaaaay better.

The acting was brilliant as well, Hailee Steinfeld was fantastic and Jeff Bridges was as good as Jeff Bridges always is.

The nostalgic critic did a "Old vs New" between them.  He made compelling arguments on how both were really good but gave the award to the new one because of the bear guy.

Highlander.

I am aware it is apparently being remade, but that remake will suck a massive dick and you all know it. Highlander deserves a REAL remake.

Highlander is an example of a fantastic concept executed appallingly. This was a film about immortal warriors, duelling through time, over centuries, gradually gathering to one location so that one of them can stand tall and take the ultimate prize. It's so. Fucking. Badass.

And the film is dogshit. I mean, it's entertaining, sweet in places, kind of awesome at moments, 'I'm in disguise,' etc. But it could have been so, so, so much better.

In fact one rumour I heard about the new one was even a pretty good idea, that being that one of the immortals might have been using a shotgun to blow people's heads of instead of cutting them off. That's awesome, and could lead to an amazing action scene.

personally, i think highlander is one of those ideas that fits better on tv than in a movie. there's just so many different stories that can come from that premise, that you'd never be able to fully explore it in film.

You have a point about that. Some kind of long term plotting would be awesome.

The Dune Mini-series was a hell of a lot better than that dog of a Film that was done a few years earlier, closer to the book than the David Lynch film.

That being said, it could easily be improved on now that 'The Unfilmable Book' has been filmed by PJ.

There are a couple of Stephen King stories that went to film I would like to see remade - just because they got the low rent treatment the first time around.  The Langoliers was meh as a film, but could have been soooo much better and given the technology available today, it could shine.  As good as 'IT' was, I think it could be better as well - again given an upgrade in the tech department.  Neither of these is likely to happen, but it's what I'd like.

Kick Ass deserves a remake so that it doesn't bite quite so much. As strict adherence to the original book would be a good start.

A couple of older films strike me as deserving of a contemporary remake. Some excellent films in their own right but I think could be retold with new cinematic techniques and directors. I'd be particularly interested in seeing Wong Kar Wai redo Metropolis and Aronofsky do High Noon.

Blade Runner?

ERAGON. That movie was so bad it turned people off of the books (which were excellent)

Uhhh... not so much the last one. The plot seemed kinda lazy at the end.
Still though, the Eragon movie was abysmal. Definitely needs a remake.

Yeah, but the first two were excellent. I mean, sure, every character is basically ripped from other stories, as is the lore, but it's put together in such a good way. I found it hard to put down, at least.

I'm not sure I'd put Cape Fear on that list.

Alfred Hitchcock remade "The Man Who Knew Too Much" for color.  I haven't seen the original, but I'd like to.

Silent films were often remade as talkies.

The best movies to remake are the mediocre ones.  No one is going to defend those.

Wing Commander: It always boggled my mind that they could take a video game franchise where the third and fourth installments basically were serviceable movies and churn out an actual movie that was such complete, utter crap.  Surely Hollywood can do better.

Starship Troopers: Ok.  The Verhoeven film has its charms.  But a movie that bore some actual relation to the novel could potentially be pretty darned kickass.  Heck, it deserves a remake for the powered armor alone.

I don't know why Mark Hammil wasn't in that playing The Bearded Guy From Wing Commander. Surely the actors they used for voices and box art could also be used in the bloody film?
