I am ... disappointed. No lap-barfing this time. It was totally Faye's turn. No punching either, Faye is not the least bit annoyed.

One question remains: Will Marten remember anything tomorrow morning?

People who think of their friends' happiness often neglect to think of their own.

And as others have pointed out, Marten is a better class of drunken idiot here.

"The" is a tiny word or small word or whatever, so even in a title it's not capitalized unless it's the first word in a sentence, or if you're only saying the title.

I'm with Akima here - if it's the first word of the title, it should have the capital.

Nope. A quick check of written references to half-a-dozen band names starting with "the" all show "the" not capitalized except at the beginning of a sentence.

Where's the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth-shattering kaboom!

I kid, I kid... that went about as well as it could, which is nice. I actually feel like Angus can actually get the job now without everything going wrong (just mostly everything ).

As for band names with "The," I have to agree with Akima. I don't see a difference between them and the title of books and movies, and I'm pretty sure it's always The Birds, The Cat in the Hat, and A Tale of Two Cities (for the sake of a different article), whether in the beginning or middle of a sentence. Unless, of course, "Promise Ring" is considered to be an equally valid name for them.

If 'the' is part of a band name officially it should be capitalised. They aren't the Strokes, they're The Strokes.

If it's part of a proper noun, it gets a capital. Unless the proper noun in question is e e cummings in which case it gets no capitals, mwahaha.

Add: Oh hey that's interesting. Although e e cummings did sometimes write his name with lower case letters, apparently he usually used capitals. It's a convention that other people have adopted on his behalf!

But you'd do it with personal names without a thought.  I would normally also place titles in italics; so I might write about Wagner's opera cycle: The Ring.

Even if The Ring is in the middle of a sentence, it's in italics.

But it seems to me the articles are title-cased only when the first word of, indeed, a title.  The same rule does not seem to apply to names of groups and individuals.

Of course, not many English names of individuals have articles at all ...

... but it seems to me names of groups commonly get a lower case the in the middle of a sentence.  And not just bands, either; from the afore linked Oxford University Style Guide: "The Department of Computer Science was previously known as the Oxford University Computing Laboratory." (Emphasis mine.)

  • What.

Not if it was in the middle of a sentence.

Yes if it is in the middle of a sentence.

No if it is in the middle of the title.

The Second Saladin, yes.
The Wisdom of Big Bird, yes.
The Shipping News, yes.
Tender at the Bone, no.

Exactly. Furthermore, how are you supposed to know whether a band considers "the" to be part of the band's name? Were they The Beatles, or just the Beatles? And was their first album entitled "Meet The Beatles" or just "Meet the Beatles"? What about the Animals, the Birds, the Hollies, or the Bangles? And is it different if the band's name is "So-and-so and [t/T]he Whatsits"? For example, is it "Florence and the Machine" or "Florence and The Machine"? (Wikipedia uses "the" for that one.)

Honestly, capitalizing the "the" in a band's name has always seemed pretentious to me. It just seems more natural and less awkward looking to leave it lowercased unless it's the first word in the sentence. That's how we do it with sports teams, too, which seems to be the same kind of thing. We refer to "the Yankees" or "the 49ers", not "The Yankees" or "The 49ers".

Re: "The": Some organizations with The as part of the name can be quite insufferable about the capitalization. I'm thinking of a certain tax-supported institute of higher education in more-or-less central Ohio.

Were they The Beatles, or just the Beatles?

They were The Beatles, and the name is so printed in the middle of sentences in the sleevenotes of their first album, Please Please Me, which I have here in front of me.

Yep. Although I'm not sure this counts as grammar.

It's "style" or just "rules", as in The Oxford Guide to Style (formerly called Hart's Rules for Compositors).  It doesn't affect sentence formation or the relationship of words, so it's not grammar - it's a typographical issue.

Oh, do you mean An Ohio State University?

Oh my god. I just told my wife, a die-hard Michigan fan, about this concept of referring to OSU as "An Ohio State University" for trash-talking purposes, and her reaction was roughly akin to Faye's upon hearing Angus cried watching Yaoi cartoons.

And yes, it should definitely be The Promise Ring. No question about it. Wouldn't have pegged Marten (or Jeph) as a fan of such a quintessentially emo band.

That's what some of us graduates of the Buckeye State's less-exalted alma maters use to refer to our schools. Although the newspaper in Dayton got off a nice shot when U of Dayton kicked the Buckeyes out of the NCAA basketball championship play. The headline was "THE University of Dayton." It almost made me wish I gave a damn about basketball.

Back in the 1980s Duke students used to trash-talk UNC by calling Duke "THE University of North Carolina". As an NC State student, I appreciated the dig while calling BS on the implication.  :-D
