... books/films/songs/games etc – capitalise the first word of the title, and all words within the title except articles (a/an/the), prepositions (to/on/for etc) and conjunctions (but/and/or etc).
✓ The Last Mohican
✓ Far from the Madding Crowd
✓ Gone with the Wind
✓ World of Warcraft
✓ Grand Theft Auto III
✓ 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life'
✘ 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life'

My emphasis.

Editor Alert....those are for titles, not proper names. As the rule quoted above says, "books/films/songs/games". Those are titles of a specific work, which are also always appear in quotes or italics (also as shown in the quotes above).

A band name is considered a proper name, not a title. It isn't treated as a separate entity from the sentence structure surrounding it. For instance, "The Beatles" always appears as the Beatles in text.

Also, what you quoted was the Oxford style guide, which is a collection of style rules specific to Oxford University. It's not an overall grammar book.

Editor Alert....those are for titles, not proper names. As the rule quoted above says, "books/films/songs/games". Those are titles of a specific work, which are also always appear in quotes or italics (also as shown in the quotes above).

I would say proper names always have capitals (but see below).

Quote
For instance, "The Beatles" always appears as the Beatles in text.

That is not true; writers vary.  In particular, when the group was established, and people referred to each member as "a Beatle", then "the Beatles" referred to the group of individuals.  But, as I said before, the text on the sleeves of the albums that have text refers to "The Beatles" throughout, as do some (not all) of my books on them.

Quote
Also, what you quoted was the Oxford style guide, which is a collection of style rules specific to Oxford University. It's not an overall grammar book.

It's not a matter of grammar, as I pointed out before; every press and university, and anyone else, can choose to define their own style; but there are certain common conventions which are almost entirely identical whichever body's style guide you choose to look them up in.  To illustrate the difference, consider the following from the Chicago University Manual of Style, which disagrees with the Oxford one on this particular matter:

Quote
Q. I would like additional clarification regarding a recent Q&A. You stated that a word that is part of a proper name should not be capitalized if such word is being used as an article in the sentence. The example given was “We evaluated the University of Texas’s enrollment data.” You stated that this was correct even if the proper name of this school is “The University of Texas.” I thought that the goal of good editing was to produce clear, accurate, and comprehensible text. If “The” as part of a proper name is not capitalized, the reader will be led to believe that it is not part of the name. Why create confusion, to say nothing of the insult that may be given in certain cultures and communities where a name may have great significance?

A. Chicago’s style is to lowercase, probably because it’s not practical for editors to research the capitalization of “the” in every organization name in a manuscript. Even quick Internet searches leave questions, since Web sites often show inconsistencies in spelling and capitalization. That’s the idea behind having a style manual in the first place: to make arbitrary decisions (which we would not call “correct,” since there are many acceptable styles) that an editor can impose efficiently within a document for the sake of consistency. Readers are not likely to be insulted if the name of their organization is treated the same as that of every other organization in a document.

Note: "That’s the idea behind having a style manual in the first place: to make arbitrary decisions (which we would not call “correct,” since there are many acceptable styles)".

I do know for a fact that it's "The Who".

The sports teams (with the exception of That School From Columbus Ohio) generally don't use capitalized "The" because the team name is considered a "nickname". Even the weird "exceptions" - both of which reside in Anaheim* - "the" is not capitalized.

* - They are the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" and, until about a decade ago, the "Mighty Ducks of Anaheim."

Wondering about the meaning of life, while drunk, seldom give meaningful answers. But apparently, Marten has started thinking. He needs change in life. Maybe he should try to get another job? Maybe get more serious with the band? What about a live performance at the Horrible Revelation?

Angus, by the way, has a rather good definition of a successful life.

Not true. I did a Google search on "the beatles" and the very first page shows multiple examples of the band's name being given as The Beatles even in the middle of sentences. So I'll go on capitalising the article in The Beatles, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Clash and The Economist.

The brain-cells that held this thought will probably die in the night. Or be overwritten by images of boobs covered in cake batter.

But they're not called Beatles. They're called The Beatles. Assuming you're correct that they never appear in print as The Beatles, a very good case can still technically be made for it to be considered correct.

Exactly. This is a style question, not a grammar question. And even if it were a grammar question , we'd have descended intp the prescriptivist/descriptivist debate by now. Style is even more fluid. There is no definitive answer and this thread could go on forever and ever. When I tried yesterday to say definitively that The Promise Ring is correct, I only meant that the The is technically part of the band's name.

Remember that quote tags come in nested pairs and when you break a pair to insert a comment you have to remake it after.

To make it even clearer, you put the quote tage {quote}except it has square brackets not curly{/quote} around the stuff you didn't write. So if you're breaking a sentence to add your stuff, put {/quote}, add your stuff, and then put {quote} to restart the quoting.

You can write instructions about using tags by enclosing them in [nobbc]...[/nobbc] tags.

Note that as it is not logically possible to put the [/nobbc] tag inside them (as it closes the first), I have used a different technique for that, which you can see by quoting this message.

FYI:

"Administrator" is the default title of my role in the forum (I could change it by defining a second identical role, as I've done for a couple of mods);

"God Warrior" is a "custom title" which anyone can have, but I've only enabled mods to set up (I've given one to Patrick, for instance) - this one is taken from a character in the film and manga Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind;

"Awakened" is the title I have given to users with over 10,000 posts (replacing the former "Dickfish") - taken from the film Evangelion: 2.0 You can (not) Advance.

The God Warrior, Ohma, is also Arbitrator, which seems appropriate:

The animation of the God Warriors in the film was the first major public appearance of Hideaki Anno, who went on to produce Evangelion, among other things.

...So I did (in image search).  And the results were.... 100% G-rated and not even remotely disturbing.  Mostly pretty pictures of cake, with an occasional picture of a fully-clothed curvy lady.

I checked three times to make sure Safe Search wasn't on.

I never would have thought any google search including the word boobs could produce such innocent results.  It's kinda awesome.

Only problem is, after looking at all those pictures, I really wish I had some cake.  :meh:
