Moment of the Week?!

If you're still not comfortable with me stayin' here...
If... if Dale says it's okay, then you can stay.
Friends? S-sure.
Now that we're friends, let's talk about your AMAZING RACK.
So, you guys are cool now? SUPER cool. (Marigold tries to protest)
She'll be propped up in a corner if they need her.
Won't make fun of their fuckin' noises.
Unless you make really funny ones. Like, whale noises. All weeeeeeeooooo
Mom just signed the lease for "a LOVELY one-bedroom apartment on Main street."
Wow. (Is that a good wow or a bad wow?)
Those apartments are WAY overpriced. (She's from California. Your prices are LAUGHABLE.)
Want really cheap rent? Nice apartment in Savannah just smilin' at the right people.
Hannelore and her hat says Hi to Martenmom!
How did your date go? Well, I'm moving up here. Oh my gosh
(furtive looks) did you kiss Yes. (OH MY GOSH)
Time for May to go look for work! Um... (What?)
Don't you have something different to wear?
All they give us is these coveralls, fuckbarn.
How do they expect you to find work wearing a "HEY I WAS IN JAIL" sign?
100 bucks for "necessities" but there's no way I'm spendin' that on CLOTHES.
I don't wanna know what you think qualifies as a "necessity."

This week: the comic suddenly turns into a manga with absolutely zero explanation, Jeph never acknowledges it, and it never changes back.

Yeah, a regular Yelling Bird strip is an obvious possibility.  The obvious question is whether it will be a strictly "traditional" Yelling Bird monologs strip, or Yelling Bird and his "friends" interacting.

Comparing Faye to Marigold in the rackage department,  I'd say they are both sporting equally impressive tracts of land.    The question is why is everyone fascinated and delighted by Marigold, and not Faye?     Is it because everyone is terrified of Faye?   Is it because Marigold exudes an additional Awesome Pheromone and Faye does not?  IS IT ALL JUST A HUMOROUS JOKE CREATED BY THE OVERJEPH (praise be to the OverJeph, all glory to Him),  or maybe I'm just drunk on REALLY good IPA and should go to bed.

A world of magical tits! Marigold have hypnotic tits, Faye have sedative tits, and if I'm not mistaken there was a mention about some exploding tits. Together they start a team of super tits, the X-Tits.

I thought it was a "slice of life" all along?

Ok, May has just jumped the shark. Pintsize has effectively become marginalised because you can only do so many "robots like porn" gags. Momo had a throw away gag about "corrupted registry files" and a couple of one-shots about action figures and Sven, which on one level can be read as being about displacement activities, but May reappears with some quite nuanced questions about quite who is manipulation who, and to what end, and suddenly she's Bluto from Animal House.

Faye is comfortable with herself... She's a girl that sticks the rack out there and owns it.. Along with everything else. Which is slightly terrifying.  Marigold is mildly cute, but horribly (almost debilitatingly) introverted to the point of almost being shut-in. She deliberately dresses down to hide them. When people meet her they realize she could "polish up" and turn some heads.. But Marigold is way to insecure for all that.

@ben May's interest and casual attitude toward anatomy isn't sudden. The joke is a callback to various obsessions about body parts including specifically about Marigold when May was in Dale's glasses.

So, creepy? yes, a bit.

Sudden? nah.

I guess May will eventually find a job, and use her first salary to accessorize herself with megaboobs. Dale will be mad because she will not have money to pay the rent.

Personally, I find Faye's boobs more fascinating than Marigold's, but that may be because Marigold usually hides them beneath some ugly clothing.

I guess we are soon back to the old discussion: Why are we fascinated with big boobs? And why on earth are robots fascinated with boobs (and porn)?

I'm sure that May defaulting on her arrangements with Dale can only be a matter of time.

Boobs, good question. I think Pintsize's obsession is really only a joke that got out of hand, a vehicle for making him increasingly OTT and for creating slapstick gags about being thrown at the wall, tied up with duct tape etc. Why does he eat cake batter?

May, who knows. The original "Marigold's boobs" gag was just a vehicle for her being crass and behaving inappropriately, although she also had a gif about changing her holo image. Maybe tomorrow's joke will be that she is winding Marigold up and setting the stage for a confrontation with Dale and/or Momo, let's see

Girls with big boobs may get more attention and compliments. Knowing you are pretty tends to increase self-confidence. On the other hand, Marigold might think people were making fun of her, thus decreasing her already low self-confidence.

I really do not know. I am not a girl.

Some ideas have percolated in the back of my head about May. Unfortunately a lot of them are tied up in traditional gender roles (ugh). But it makes me wonder what May was like before she met Dale. Or if indeed she really is a she. Dale chose May's name, which she decided to keep. And her maid appearance was based on what metrics said that Dale should find appealing. But we have no idea what form she was using before, or if she even had a body before robot jail. We have no idea what gender if any she identified with. Or even really if AIs identify with genders, or just go along with what people see them as, given their chassis and personality traits.

Didn't we have this precise discussion just last week? Yes, that was also you, NilsO. I'm not sure if I'm the only one who objects to patronising "socially awkward" people, but can't we please can it with the comments on the oh so socially awkward nerds that would never get any action if they weren't pushed along by their friends? Why are you so damn keen on emphasising this point (which is not even true. Two people that are socially awkward with most others can be perfectly comfortable with each other) again and again?

Secondly: What the fuck?
Its kind of weird, maybe even unrealistic, that the socially akward girl has the big boobs in this comic.
People's boob size has nothing to do whatsoever with how confident they are or aren't. In the case of Marigold, we know that she is just generally uncomfortable with her body (or at least she used to be. Being with Dale probably helps her like her body more) and the fact that people keep noticing her boob size is probably quite a big part of that.
They're lumps of fat on your chest not a magic "Make yourself the universe better" button.
Thanks for that comment, that's quite well-put!

Thirdly, I am not comfortable with how Marigold's and Faye's bodies are discussed in this thread by some of you (not everyone in the discussion. I think it's quite clear which posts I'm talking about). If I'm the only one, ok, but maybe the predominantly male (at least I think so judging from the usernames) forum members partaking in this discussion can question whether it is really necessary and adequate to discuss which boobs are prettier in this thread. I mean, honestly, do you wonder that some girls are uncomfortable with their breasts if this is how they're discussed and assessed by others?
I have the fullest confidence that the mods know what they're doing, but I thought I'd just throw this out there.

Edit: Yes, my temper was a little heated while typing this post. Since it doesn't contain any personal attacks as far as I am aware, I will however leave it like this for now so people can see my honest reaction to this thread.

It can be easy to get to feel like that as a mod; but if it needs saying we should be prepared to say it, which is our role.  Others may not find it as repetitive as we do, because (a) often different people are taking part in the debate, and (b) many people just skim the threads anyway and forget much of what they've passed over (and also only read some threads  in any case).

Thanks, Mlle Germain, for raising this when we were not dealing with it.

I don't believe AIs do identify with gender. The Idoru staff mention having been a fork truck, a submarine and a cash-control system of some kind; May was sent to robot jail for a failed scam intended to buy a fighter jet. Pintsize's fixation seems more like a running joke than anything else; it's clear from the outcome of his "date" that he cannot actually distinguish the configured gender of another AnthroPC on a functional level. Winslow might well not have a configured gender at all and the Linux "neck beard" joke is just that, a throw-away joke about Linux users

It's not just on this forum, it's in real life too - I don't consider comments on my appearance from strangers to be flattering, I consider them to be creepy and demeaning. Someone I'm sleeping with, or a close friend, or possibly a family member, complimenting part of my appearance is ok because I know they care about me as a person first, and don't focus on what I look like. Someone I don't know? I don't care how flattering you think you are being, it isn't ok to appraise my body and then inform me that I've met your aesthetic standards.

Ben, good point about the trucks and submarines etc, but I think Pintsize's failed date actually shows that gender DOES matter to anthroPCs; the date got very upset about being misgendered and Pintsize felt weird about having felt attracted to a robot of a different gender to the one he thought they were.

Several points together there. We don't know what actually happened to Pintsize but it's clear that he could not functionally identify the configured gender, and there is a fairly clear implication that the other AI couldn't either, until it was actually stated.

Given that Momo is known to have a "social protocol database" and Pintsize frequently does things specifically to be offensive or provocative the best reading I can put on it is that AIs of various kinds are influenced by their configuration to adopt social gender roles and I'd guess this is because it would be pretty much impossible to get humans to regard them as "persons" without some such convention.

I think it's good when you say something; there have been so many times when I felt someone should say something and you did or had already done so!
But of course it's not only the mods' job; other forum members can speak up as well. I am sometimes uncertain about doing it, though, just like you said. In my case it's also that I am still a comparatively new member.

True, but we are discussing an English language comic in English. Most other Slavic or European languages are inflected so that all objects have gender as a matter of course

We are comfortable with this.  However, I would just issue a caution that some forums are not - there are those which call it back-seat modding, and consider it an infringement of the rules.
