this goes out to all the shitty tribute albums that have come out over the years. from the largely bland and insufferable Oingo Boingo tribute album to the mostly damn near unlistenable Jawbreaker tribute album (not to mention the Tony Hawk Underground soundtrack), this is a salute to all the bands who have taken their time to butcher songs by artists that they claim to admire. here's a sampling of what we might be able to expect from the future if this disgraceful tide refuses to let up.

scary, eh? and the scariest part? both of these tribute albums are entirely feasible. all it takes is a record label wanting to cash in on the name of an influential band or artist, and having the connections to snag a bunch of at least fairly well-known bands. so do your part. just say no to bad tribute albums.

Barry: Top 5 songs about death. A Laura's Dad tribute list, okay? Okay. Leader of the Pack. The guy fuckin' beefs it on his motorcycle and dies, right? Dead Man's Curve. Jan & Dean.
Dick: Do you know that right after they recorded that song Jan himself crashed his car...
Barry: It was Dean you fuckin' idiot...
Rob: It was Jan. It was a long time after the song.
Barry: Okay, whatever. Tell Laura I Love Her. That would bring the house down - Laura's Mom could sing it. You know what I'd want? One Step Beyond by Madness. And, uh, You Can't Always Get What You Want.
Dick: No. Immediate disqualification because of its involvement with The Big Chill.
Barry: Oh God. You're right!
Dick: Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot.
Barry: You bastard! That's so good - that should have been mine... The night Laura's daddy died. Sha na na na na na na na na! Brother what a night it really was. Mother what a night it really... angina's tough! Glory be!

I was at tower records tonight and was freaking out at the tribute albums they had. Vitamin Records keeps putting out these String Quartet tributes... to a whole lot of artists including really good ones. The thing is, they basically just make a tribute album for any artist thats put out an album. Thus, I did indeed see tribute albums to: Yellowcard, Hubastank, Nickleback, Hawthorne Heights, Jessica Simpson (huh?), Limp Bizkit, and wait for it... wait for it... OH, YOU KNOW ITS COMING... Creed.
The most ridiculous part was that on the back of each cd they had a paragraph explaining that artist's greatness and contributions that artist made to music.
The entire catalogue is online here (Though the recent releases aren't up yet)
Some highlights:
Limp Bizkit-Leading the wave of rock/rap hybrids, Limp Bizkit has carved out a loyal following over the years. Relentless touring and the occasional call to ‘break stuff’ has pushed them to the top of the charts, firmly positioning Bizkit as rock royalty.
Creed-With their combination of hard-hitting rock and earthy spirituality, Creed captured the hearts, minds and souls of millions of fans across the world. Creed has made faith in a higher power cool again.
P.O.D.- With eclectic influences ranging from nu-metal to latin to hip-hop and their undeniably positive message, it’s no wonder Southern California’s P.O.D. has made fans across the globe. And they rock hard!
Jessica Simpson-She’s America’s sexy, blonde mistress of all media – Billboard chart-topper, reality TV star, magazine cover golden girl. But it’s her awesome voice that propelled Jessica Simpson to the peak of pop diva-dom. Those are gospel roots showing through that blonde mane, and they give Simpson’s vocals their power and a unique, sultry innocence. She can go good-girl sweet on a ballad, or bad-girl breathy on a dance track, turning tunes by the country’s top songwriters into “Irresistible” Jessica platinum. You’ve never experienced Jessica Simpson like this. The String Quartet Tribute kicks out the hype and cranks up the celebratory vibe of her music. When these violin and cello players launch into her party-rousing hits, grooving is no longer optional... and if they wrap their strings around a love song like “I Wanna Love You Forever”, hang on to your heart. Simpson plus Strings equals sweet, danceable pop perfection.
Ok, so this has nothing to do with the intended purpose of this thread but I thought it highly appropriate.
Storm Rider:
I doubt the horrible emo bands you mentioned have even really listened to Fugazi, much less cared enough about them to make a tribute album.
What would really scare me is a tribute album by My Chemical Romance to Iron Maiden. Apparently, their singer counts them as an influence, so this is actually a remote, yet absolutely terrifying possibility.
And Coheed and Cambria covering any decent bands from the 4 or 5 genres that they manage to butcher.

<Jcknbl's post>
haha, i love those. they also have a lot of bluegrass tributes to rather non-bluegrass artists.
my absolute favorite, though, is this one: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product_listing.gsp?cat=79405&path=0%3A4104%3A4118%3A5090
it's a tribute to Blink 182 done by a band called THE UNITED STATES OF PUNK! AMAZING!
Storm Rider: yeah, i doubt they have, too, i just went on myspace music and searched for the most popular bands that have "post-hardcore" listed as one of their genres.
