"Next generation" hardware
est:
So I know that everyone's going spastic over the next generation of consoles at the moment, but let's take time out of all that crap to examine how the next generation of pc hardware is shaping up.
Some things that are getting me excited include:[*]HDR and better antialiasing technologies. ATI are working on getting parts of the technology they use in the XBOX360 video system (Xenos) into pc cards. Hopefully this means that antialiasing won't give your game such a performance hit. This can only be a good thing in my eyes, as I absolutely hate those goddamn jagged edges. If they can get this working with HDR support then I'll be totally onboard.
[*]The shift towards dedicated physics processing. Whether it be the PhysX card from Ageia (Sample footage from Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter), Nvidia's 6x00/7x00 physics-processing hacks or just physics processing on the second core of your multi-core cpu I don't care. Just get it done! I want things to look better, sure, but a lot of what makes things look good is the natural physical impression they give you. The Havok physic engine powers the physics in a fair few of my favourite games, so I guess I'm a big fan. When you can interact with the world in ways you couldn't before that increases immersiveness. This isn't a replacement for decent gameplay/story in general, but it's definitely appreciated on top of an already good game.
[*]Intel's new range of CPUs. I'm infused with a healthy dose of skepticism regarding Anandtech's benchmarks, but at the same time I am also optimistic that in the next year we'll see Intel take the gaming crown back from AMD. I'm not sure what else AMD has planned for release after Intel's offerings, but hopefully supremacy will jump back and forth for a while next year. That kind of competition would only mean good things for us in the CPU performance stakes.[/list:u]
What upcoming PC tech is getting you excited? Are you a Mac person who is getting excited about the Mac on Intel thing getting because it makes it easier for games to be developed for your system? Are you getting super-excited over solid-state hard drives? Laptops? SED monitors? Megachips?!?!?!
Catfish_Man:
Resolution independent display. I think this will be the biggest improvement in readability since VGA, as well as probably fundamentally reshaping the graphics card market (when 4000x3000 is normal, pixel fillrates suddenly start looking important again).
This article (scroll down to the "INTERPOLATION ON WHY COMPUTER DISPLAYS SUCK FOR READING" section) explains nicely why I think this'll be such a big deal.

I'm soon getting a powermac g5 before they completely transfer into intel chips. Reason being that it'll be a while before they have everything optimized for their core duos or whatever. I can't wait that long, but I'm still interested to see where it'll go. Hopefully more games will be developed for Macs.
I'm also wondering if there is going to be much change once Dell purchases Alienware. Will their prices drop or will they rise?
DavidGrohl:
Personally, I'm just waiting for unlimited draw distance.

Petabyte harddrives!
