Did a search and found precious few references to this game so I'm making a thread. For those of you who just want to play the game just go here to download it (it's completely legal). If you'd like to know more, just read on. =)

The Ur-Quan Masters is a port of the 3do version of Star Control II to modern operating systems that was initiated by the original creators (and still owners) of the game, Toys for Bob. For those of you who haven't heard of this sci-fi game, it's a mix of action, adventure, and some rpg-ish elements thrown in for good measure. The setup starts off a bit cliched but the unique alien species, excellent dialogue, the fleshed-out backstory, and solid gameplay more than make up for what seems like a familiar setup.

Star Control II was released in 1992 and won both game of the year and sci-fi game of the year. IGN and Gamespot both have ranked it among the greatest games of all time, and rightfully so.

Go to http://sc2.sourceforge.net/ to download the current version of the port. My suggestion, for maximum old schoolness, is to play with the original mod soundtrack and text only for the dialogue.

One thing to note is that although this is a port of the 3do version of the game, the idea is to get the dialogue to match the original pc version. Some of the 3do dialogue had to be cut for technical reasons and unfortunately one important piece of information and one VITAL piece of information are still missing. This missing information is in regards to the time limit (which can be found in more than one place, it's only the first time you're likely to hear of it that it's missing) and the homeworld of one of the aliens you need to visit in order to finish an important quest. The forums on the site I linked to have a stickied thread with this info though, so it's not as bad as it seems.

For what it's worth, I highly recommend at least giving this game a shot. I'd like to know what the forumers here think of it too, so feel free to post your opinions!

Hoo boy, I think I played more Star Control II than any other game in history, except maybe Everquest. SC2 is my all-time favourite game of all time. (Intended repeat.)

I'll have to check that out when I'm at home. (In the office atm.)
