Thrillho:

--- Quote from: Dimi ---what i mean is i normally would hate this type of music - 'commercial shitiness'...but this time for some strange reason I like it. It reminds me a lot of the pop funk of the 70's and 80's...(fuckin hate the 80's, but the 70's I enjoy mostly because of it being so true to its origins - jazz/soul)
--- End quote ---

What a prejudiced view of music. Commercialism isn't always a bad thing.

Dimi:
What are you talking about O_O...commercialism is terrible for music. Have you heard of the crap they put on the radio? I'm sorry for offending you, if I am (clearly I am)...but the shit they put on is well...shit. I see no musical aspects in it besides the use of rhythm. This being the genre 'house' that's hit it big. I really hate the fact that people are so goddamn musically illiterate that when you show them a Tower of Power or an Average White Band track they say it's stupid 'jazz' that has no rhythm O_O.

The only time commercialism works is when you introduce your style at the right time. Earth, Wind & Fire managed that...they introduced pop mixed with funk when funk/rnb was starting to take hold. So therefore they had something 'new'.

Then there's people like Frank Zappa who don't get the slitest bit of praise for their work because they play "stuff that is wierd" (a friend so colourfully put it). Then you hear comments like "this sounds like shit" and things that actually sound "good" are your common DOOFDOOF.

Commercialism in my view is what sells. That's why I hate it. No musicality, good looking...that's what normally sells. That's why indie bands are so successful to just a few...because just a few respect music in more than one form.
No commercialism isn't always a bad thing...but it's not always a good thing.
What I was trying to say before is I like what SPICE had to offer...I just hate the fact that they were introduced in such a poor way as to deteriorate to nothingness...they had a good thing going.

FeralCats:
Now-I disagree with you on this one. Rap and Hip-hop have musical qualities beyond just rhythm, though it is a predominate factor. If your sole interest in music is listening to things that are 'indie' and 'cool', then I can see why you don't like 'commercialism'. Go buy an album by Quasimoto-very Zappa influenced rap. (It even has the Freak Out! speech bubble on one of his albums.)

Commercial music can be good. It's music that TRIES to be commercial, and in the event bastardizes itself that's bad.

I like Kanye West. I enjoy two songs off of the new Black Eyed Peas album my sister has. (Bebot and what is ironically and somewhat hypocritically called 'They Don't Want Music', designed to cash in on people JUST LIKE YOU...)

Quoth Frank Zappa- "If it sounds good to you, it's bitchen, if it doesn't, it sucks."

Kai:
And while we're on the Zappa quoting bandwagon:

"Anyone who is disturbed by the idea of newts
in a nightclub is potentially dangerous."
-Zappa

Is it relevant? Not really.

Yeah, hip hop can have some good things. I mean, Deltron 3030, WHAT? Yeah.

I consider myself a fairly big Zappa fan, and I have never heard of this quote. What exactly is the context?
