If you want to see a movie that is entertaining and funny, might I suggest you promptly go out and rent "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". Starring Eric Idle, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Micheal Palin, and many others, this movie is full of humor. The problem is, you have to understand British humor, or the movie seems to fall flat on its face.

All in all, it is a very good movie, and I would recomend it to any one who has any semblance of a sense of humor.

As much as I'd like to agree with you, as I am a huge Python fan, I would argue that Life of Brian is the best of the Monty Python movies. Holy Grail is the most accessable however, and it's probably best to ween on non-python fan into the series with it.

The humour is odd, and it's not for everyone. But it is for everyone who is awesome, so yeah...go see it....and then Life of Brian....then Meaning of Life....then And Now For Something Completely Different....and Live and the Hollywood Bowl, and the entire Flying Circus...and Yellowbeard...and Brazil.

I'm going to have to say the latin lesson in Brian is gold, as is the reaper scene in Meanin of Life (oh, and the song!).  Now For Something Completely Different totally does not need to exist.  It's a best-of collection of absurdist sketch comedy....uh what the hell?  Just buy all the Flying Circus, or have your grandmother give you the entire set for Christmas (<3).

I love Monty Python

I went to a monty python day at the castle the holy grail was filmed at.

It was cool, there were sketches and stuff like that. And then we watched the film on a huge projector screen inside the castles grounds. There is nothing better than watching Monty Python and the holy grail with 500 fans in fancy dress singing along and laughing. :-)

They gave out free coconuts tied together with string. I still have them :-)

Birthday trips with the family are the best.

When I read the initial post, I thought it had to be some kind of joke. Then I realized that maybe there are some people on the Internet that don't have this entire movie memorized.

Seems unlikely though.

Not everyone can afford the $200 box set. Also, ANFSCD is fantastic because, like Holy Grail, it's the most accessable of the sketches, making it better for groups than Flying Circus is.

I liked Life of Brian the best out of their movies. It was just an amazingly well done satire and fucking hilarious to boot. Meaning of Life was amazing also. Holy Grail, I'm pretty burnt out on. Flying Circus is classic.

I purposely don't watch Holy Grail much, because it's so overplayed that I want to keep it fresh and funny every time I watch it.

I guess.  I do own the movie.  I just never watch it, because I usually prefer the versions on the original Flying Circus.  For instance, I much prefer the Barber Shop Sketch to lead into the Lumberjack Song, rather than the dead parrot sketch.

Also, if you like any Monty Python films/shows/sketchs go down to New York City and see Monty Pythons Spamalot. I did, and I am glad I did. It was as funny, possibly funnier than most things Monty Python has worked on. Trust me, it is worth the $111.

Argh, if I could afford it I would. I'm not that far away (Toronto), but I just can't justify the costs, I need to save money like a madman.

I agree, Flying Circus is better, but ANFSCD is just easier to deal with, especially for those not familiar with the series.

Also, how many people have the CD "Monty Pythod Sings"? It's terrific.

I agree with whomever said that Life of Brian is the best Monty Python film, but that Holy Grail is the most accessible. Some unfortunate individuals will choose to become offended by Life of Brian rather than accepting it for the brilliance that it is... while nearly anyone can get a chuckle out of Holy Grail.

Life of Brian is completely inoffensive, in my opinion (which I'm not saying is shared by all).  If anything, it promotes Christianity.  I mean, it's a parody saying, "What if people followed the wrong person as a savior?"  They were originally going to actually directly attack the Bible, but then they read it (because you have to know what you're going after) and realized that it was actually pretty reasonable.

Disclaimer:  I am not actually Christian and this is not a support of Christian beliefs.

That sketch was pretty hilarious... but I think my personal favorite Python sketch is from TMoL and is the "Every sperm is sacred" one.

Now I want to go watch it again, and inevitably have that song stuck in my head for three days.

Yup.  One of my favorites.  It's also a great out-of-context quote.  My father and one of his co-workers were trying to get something done close to a project deadline, and they weren't making any progress, so they ended up just sitting in silence staring at the problem, and my dad just suddenly says that line.  His co-worker didn't stop laughing for a good five minutes.

I heard that when filming the Every Sperm is Sacred sketch for The Meaning of Life, they nearly blew the budget. I love the song, it is really funny, but not as funny as the Lumberjack song. That is hilarious.

Every Sperm is sacred almost blew their budget it's true.

What I like more is they had extra money for The Holy Grail, so they just added more explosions to the Tim the Enchanter scene.

Monty Python is great, I love' em all, blah blah blah.

I went to see Spamalot when it was in Chicago with the original cast before the show went to NYC. (Saw The Producers the same way.) I liked the show, Tim Curry was fantastic, David Hyde Pierce was great, Hank Azaria stole the show, but it was definitely different than the movie. Not in a bad way, 'cause I laughed the whole damn time. But just different. It's wicked hard to take such a cult classic and make a major Broadway production out of it.

/shrug, my 2 cents.

Monty Python, certainly Gods of comedy.

I've seen the 3 movies. Holy Grail made me laugh more frequently, but Meaning of Life, and Life of Brian, defenately made me laugh much harder. As for a favourite, I really cant choose, there all such classic films.

I also have the Monty Python Sings C.D, it's just full of comical brilliance.

Hail! Monty Python!

Although it's also true that Every Sperm is Sacred wouldn't have even scratched their budget if Terry Gilliam hadn't blown about as much as the rest of the film cost on The Crimson Permanent Assurance.

I love the Python movies, but I seriously can't stand to watch And Now For Something Completely Different, for the sole reason that they took the very best part out of the Fresh Fruit Sketch.

"Release the tiger

Also I pray that someone will get around to releasing flying circus on DVD in Australia sometime soon. I've contemplated buying the VHS tapes off Ebay, but I would have to buy another damn VCR after I beat the living shit out of the last one.

Just because you didn't get the jokes, or the ending, doesn't make it a bloody classic and probably Gilliams second or third best film.

Also, every single line Evil Genius says.

And dwarves knocking the crap out of each other.

And Napoleons Napoleon complex.

And Vincent and Pansy.

And John Cleese as Robin Hood...

Hell, it's an extremely funny film. Also, the ending is brilliant. It absolutely fucks the conventions of 'magic garden' fantasy (ie child transported on magical adventures but home in time for tea) with a stick by first seeming to cop out with an 'It was all a dream' ending (if you look, EVERYTHING in the film is somewhere in Kevins bedroom. The part of the fortress of ultimate darkness in which they do battle with Evil Genius is actually made out of lego bricks with knobs on the top) and then throwing a complete left-field curve-ball by having first the Fireman reveal his knowledge of Kevins adventures then, "Don't touch it, it's evil!". It's Gilliams masterstroke, and a major reason I rate the film so highly.
