RUSH2112:

--- Quote from: Aneurhythmia ---I dunno.  I'd question either Petrucci or Satriani being in the top 10.  Vai seems less limited than those two, but there are probably better anyway.

And there are probably thousands of jazz drummers that are better than Portnoy.

Ever seen G3 in Tokyo? That was amazing. Vai, Petrucci, and Satriani all together. Amazing. I don't think I could pick which was better. A lot of people just don't like Petrucci because he doesn't showboat while he's onstage (like Vai does). But he doesn't need to because it sounds too good anyway.

As to Portnoy, I will readily admit there are ones better than him. I already named a few. Smith, and the true master Peart for instance. As far as I'm concerned, Peart is the best simply because whenever he hears a new style of drumming he incorporates it into his own. He's the most diverse drummer ever. And who could forget the legend, Buddy Rich? But even Peart beats him.

That's a pretty lofty claim.  And an interesting definition of best.

And I tend to prefer Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco DeLucia's proto-G3.

RUSH2112:
Excuse my ignorance, but did DiMiola do anything electric? Because he is without a doubt an unrivaled classical guitarist. But I've never heard anything by him electric. Perhaps I should specify. We were talking metal and I naturally assumed we were talking electric guitarists.

But what about JR and NP? Can your really find anyone better? ( I swear if you say Chic Corea...)

Filk:

--- Quote from: Filk ---Dream Theater has one of the most skilled musicians i've ever heard.

If they went a little heavier, switched to a less whiny vocalist and got rid of the keyboards, i'd love them for the rest of my days.

Or you could just listen to any number of existing virtuoso technical metal bands.  Some of which even have a decent notion of songwriting.

The thing with metal bands is that they generally have one good player and the rest are just slightly above average. In DT every single one of them is pretty damn good. (I said generally, I know there are exceptions)

--- Quote from: RUSH2112 ---Pfft...Jordan Rudess pwns all. Seriously. Get rid of him and Dream theater would be on crutches...Seriously.
--- End quote ---

I have nothing against Rudess or his musical abilities, I just think keyboards don't really belong there. Or maybe i just don't like prog metal generally, it just sounds stange to me. Now i have an instrumental CD with just Rudess and Petrucci and it's really good.

--- Quote from: Kai ---Virtuoso? My favorite is Buckethead, really. You get the avant with the metal (on most albums, some are more ambient n shiz) and it rocks the fuck out.

He's amazing. The first album of his i got was Enter the Chicken and it really surprised me how he can make excellent songs in so many different genres.

Oh and i keep hearing about Agalloch, but none of the stores in my area have any of their CDs. Bastards :(

Welcome to the world of underground metal.

I really don't listen to much prog, or virtuoso players, so I'll have to trust people who know better than me on Dream Theater, sure they are excellent musicians, but not a single one of them is the best at what they do...I mean come on.   Like someone said, there are hundreds if not thousands of jazz drummers better than Portnoy. Myung is an amazing player, but doesn't end up doing very creative stuff.  Petrucci, also very good, but there a many far more creative guitarists out there.

Just because, overall, Dream Theater are better musicians than your average metal band, doesn't mean they are the best.
