Seeing Sigur Ros tomorrow!
« on: 07 May 2006, 18:15 »

As the title says, I'm seeing Sigur Ros tomorrow at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis.  Anyone else seeing them tomorrow/caught them on this tour? If so, what did you think?

I saw them play here in Auckland, t'was fucking fantastic. I suggest you go if you are a fan at all, even a little and the tickets are not insane. They're indescribably more awesome live than recorded, as tends to be the case with most bands but even more so with them.

e: Oh you are going. Good. You will enjoy it unless something goes very, very wrong.

It was fucking amazing!  Seeing Jonsi beat the living shit out of his guitar with the mangled remains of his cello bow after playing Haffsol is a sight I will never forget.

I was also at the Auckland concert. My eyeballs and earholes were dumbfounded by the awesomeness.

That would've been an interesting 75 minutes...

I went yesterday. People also shouted "FREEBIRD!". Ugh.

And I hated the drunken idiots who were going "OWWW!" when they were trying to create a beautiful atmosphere.

Seriously, fuck those drunk idiots. People, don't get wasted at concerts. You're runing the moment.

But the concert was mindblowing. Easily the best concert i've been to. And now to wait for Mogwai in 6 days...

I will probably get tomatoes thrown at me here...

I was at their show in Chicago and didnt like it. I was seriously falling asleep there (having slept about 3 hours the previous night might have had something to do with that as well).

I wasn't really familiar with their stuff before seeing them, but i've heard them being compared to Mogwai (which i like a lot). The vocals are way over the top and their whole sound is just too weird for me.

Now i might not be a musical expert, but i failed to hear any sound produced by the guitarist, who seemed to play his guitar so vigorously with a cello bow. And correct me if i'm wrong, but i think the strings on a guitar are arranged in a straight line, as opposed to an arc in classical string instruments, so touching individual strings with a bow is somewhat complicated.

Chords. They're called chords.

The other guitarist did the more normal guitar parts.

Filk, when I saw them I had trouble figuring out which sound was attached to the guitar as well, but it is there.

Even though they get compared to Mogwai, its only because they're one of the higher profile post-rock bands out there.  I agree that their sound is very different from that of Mogwai, and I love both Mogwai and Sigur Ros.  The bowed-guitar is all chords, and a good example of the sound is in their song "Svefn-g-enlgar", it sounds like sort of a fat humming overdrive-y noise to my ears.

Quote
Post-rock is a music genre characterized by nontraditional use of instruments and high musical density...The term was coined by Simon Reynolds in issue 123 of The Wire (May 1994) to describe a sort of music "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbres and textures rather than riffs and power chords."

From the Wikipedia definition of 'Post-Rock'.  Sigur Ros may be more on the lyrical, convetional rock side of the genre, but I think they fit the description pretty well.

Ummmmm. I saw Sigur Ros in Boston on Sunday night at the Bank of America Pavilion. For those who don't know, it's pretty much a stage with an expensive, huge ass tarp over the seats. This was the night before all hell broke loose with the flooding. It was, uh, raining pretty hard to say the least. Holy fucking god it was amazing.

I just back to my house a little while ago thanks to the flooding and I'm not really in any state to sit here and describe the experience, but uggggggggh. It was absolutely fantastic.

My brother drove several hours from Ithaca to the show in Boston.  I was so jealous, because I was studying for finals about 800 miles west of there.

He was absolutely ecstatic about it though, both the music and the visual presentation.

I was at that show with a friend. The show would have been alot better without the cold, wet rain. The ending was absolutely amazing, they played Untitled 8 and... wow.
