Hola!

I am looking for some music with spanish vocals which isn't worthless pop ala Fobia or La Oreja de Van Gogh. Thus far I have encountered a total of two good artists who sing in spanish:
Juana Molina
Manu Chao

Some mariachi music would be cool but I am pretty much open for anything as long as it is "good" :)

there's a band called Lumumba with Spanish lyrics.  and their lead singer sounds like Cookie Monster.  i have only one of their songs, though.

I'm very fond of the Argentinian rock/funk band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs (their song Matador became quite famous in the '80s and was included on the Grosse Pointe Blank sound track.  I highly recommend their live albums "Hola" and "Chau" which both came out in 2001.

Also check out Mexican hip hop/electronic group Plastilina Mosh.  Their single "Human Disco Ball" is much fun.

When I said worthless pop I just meant it wasn't very good. It wasn't to say that I would mind good spanish pop :)
I am pretty much willing to listen to anything.

I saw a (prett decent) pop-punk band called No Children once who were from Mallorca who sung some songs in english and some in spanish.

Willing to listen to anything, eh?

Los Crudos and Ruidosa Inmundicia it is, then. Also Sin Dios and Mano Negra (Manu Chao's old band).

Folk-rock:  Satania (Live) from Mago De Oz on their Folktergeist album.

Stoner Rock:
Americano by Los Natas, from their Corsario Negro album.
I believe the second song is not the most representative song of Los Natas. It is by no mean a bad one, but they usually don,t sing much (I picked one with some lyrics) and the music is much more "spacey" than rock, usually. Still a great song by Los Natas.

Thrones -"Django"

its not mariachi music...and im pretty sure its the only song he does thats in spanish (it might not actually be spanish, but its close), buts its cool. it hails from his concept album where every song is about bears.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

The Pixies did some great songs in Spanish, but Frank Black's Spanish is probably not the best around.

C-c-c-c-Café Tacuba. :)

Also, don't shoot me, but some of Shakira's early stuff (e.g. "Dondé Estan Los Ladrones?") is pretty good..

Check Los Planetas.

I'd recommend their first and third album, titled "Super 8" and "Una semana en el motor de un autobus" respectively.

They have  great selection of B-sides and other albums, but those are the one I like best.

biggest names in latin rap/reggaeton (both puerto rico/nyc I think):
daddy yankee
tego calderon

more traditional stuff
diego el cigala (flamenco - spain)
silvio rodriguez (guitar/vocal - cuba)
susana baca (trad/singer songwriter - peru)
antonio aguilar (norteno/rachero - mexico)

60s/70s rock
dias de blues (blues rock - uruguay)
the speakers (experimental rock - colombia)
los vidrios quebrados (garage rock - chile)

Really I don't know that much in Spanish, if you had said portuguese I could give you awesome recs

Well, so that you can get a legal taste of them

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=22368011

There you have two songs, none of them too recent, but I hope it helps.

One thing that I must add, is that you better go googling the lyrics, because I am a native speaker and still find it difficult to understand some of J's (the singer) mumbling words.

Check them, dammit!!

i really like zoé, i would recommend theirs asteroide and dead songs as introduction.

check jumbo's cover of pedro infante deja que salga la luna.

delicado sónico is all what belanova tries too hard to accomplish and fails. they have very sweet, dreamy songs, as in a dulcigomas overdose.

you can download Hendersonville Vol.1 by abeja on http://www.elfrente.org/abeja/index.php?seccion=download. sweet silly enchanting folk.

Early shakira is good aswell.
Depending on what ur looking for, Eddy Herrera, or Olga Tanon might full fill ur craving.

Los Lobos . do a bunch of songs in spanish, and they rock pretty hardcore for straight-up rock mixed with more traditional mexican influences.

On a harder edge and also from L.A. come Calavera a band that is equal parts GBH and psychobilly.

I've heard of Tijuana No! supposedly the first Mexican punk band, but I never found anything of theirs, so that probably isnt too much help.

Finally, also somewhat psychobilly related, Speed Crazy do a fantastic cover of "Por Que te Vas" with Erica, the bassist, taking over vocals.
