I still haven't gotten around to checking them out, but lord knows I am a total sucker for prog rock..
Another Candidate:
ARSIS!!
not much to say, other than it is just fuckin' kick-ass metal. The riffs man, the riffs!! It's ridiculous, I am listening to them right now, and it's just orgasmic. Brilliant!

aside from deerhoof this may be an oxymoron.

Having heard Deerhoof, I don't think they're an exception to this.
Referring back to my earlier nomination of Dantalian's Chariot: 1960's psychedelic rock band. Given that they probably don't remember who they were, it's a fair bet that most of you lot won't either.
Storm Rider:
Oh man, my buddy just really got into Arsis, I was meaning to bum one of their albums off him.

Do it, for gods sake, DO IT!!
"A Celebration Of Guilt" is pure fucking awrsomeness.
On paper, it should actually be totally lame:
It's melodic death metal, and the Shred-factor is completely off the scale, which could result in it ending up as a total wank-fest.
And the album doesn't have much in the way of variation at first glance, but after a few listens, the subtleties of the dynamics sink in. Still, at first listen it just sounds like 180 mph guitar-melting all the time..
But somehow, the end result is just... wow..
Sure, it is in some way a technical wankfest, but all the uber-technical riffs and complex overdubs tie in so well it's not even funny. And the biggest plus is: It's got SONGS!!
The songwriting is fucking phenomenal, and quite catchy with impeccable dynamics and flow. Everything kicks in at the perfect time. Every tempo change, blastbeat, mid-tempo breakdown, melodic harmony riff of extreme awesomeness +2 and every bitchin' solo is placed perfectly and hammered in with undeniable authority.
But don't just take my word for it, check it out for yourself:

"The Face Of My Innocence".. That song sums up their sound pretty well, and it just kicks off that album so perfectly.
Johnny C:
--- Quote from: Paul Kemp ---Roky Erickson (it was a photo finish between his name, and the name of the band he used to be in, The 13th Floor Elevators).

Coulda just said "& Blieb Alien" and you would have won. Well, except I still woulda caught you.
po' girl are a folk band. The Pizzicato Five are a J-Pop band on Matador. The Snitches are from Canada and play power-pop. Blood Meridian are country-rock and I don't know where they're from. Same with Ladyhawk.
