Soundcard Installation Issues D:
« on: 05 May 2006, 16:58 »

So. I decided to buy a new 5.1 PC sound system and a 5.1 sound card, they show up and I attempt to install it m'self. I know a thing or two about connecting shit to a PC, but I've never done a sound card before. So I just install it how I would a new video card, right?

Basically, the first time I plug it in and turn on the machine, it hangs just after the first Windows loading screen (xp pro sp1). I pull it out and hit the bios and try to see if it's having any hardware conflicts. I don't see anything about switching off the onboard in the bios, so I boot up and disable the onboard via windows Sounds and Audio Devices in the control panel and shut it off to try this all again.

This time, windows loads up and I can get into a profile, only after a bit windows recognises that there's a new piece of hardware installed, and when it realizes what it is, my mouse and keyboard and internet connection shut off.

Now, I figure the soundcard is just no good, so I get a different one. (it turns out to be the same model packaged by a different company. fuck!) and the exact problems persist. Since then, my onboard sound hasn't worked, even after I reinstalled the drivers and re-enabled it in the hardware profile.

specifics:

motherboard: Asus A7V8X-X
soundcard: CMI 8738 PCI 6Channel

I think that's everything. Help me, obi wan kenobis!

A few ideas:

Power is frequently the biggest problem when it comes to troubleshooting stuff like this. How many watts is the PSU you're using?

How many expansion cards are in the system? I can't say I've seen this problem in quite a while, but it's possible that you run out of IRQs. Are you running in Plug & Play mode or not (in BIOS)
