FreshJive787:
why not a laser guitar? we already have completely impractical laser keyboards.

McTaggart:
Do those thing even vaguely work?

And to the person who said that the laser guitar is 'trying to be experimental'; I hardly count creating something that works completely differently but has less functionality than the original experimental.

The way I'd do it would be to fire six coherent columns of lasers down the fret into a grid with six small slits, creating an interence pattern on a series of light sensitive resistors at the end where the strings would be fixed on a conventional guitar. Each resistor would in effect control the amount of each frequency that gets into the final output. In the section between the grating and the pickups you could arrange a series of lenses that you could move about and change the pattern on the pickups, hence changing the sound. Then you might as well put it on a table because it'll play more like a pedal steel anyway.
