VIRUS! OH NOES!

(1/2) > >>

Oli:
Ok so my friend went and downloaded a virus accidentally.

He asked me to try and help him get rid of it, so I figured I'd ask all you peeps to help me out a little.

So I have no idea what kind of virus this is. Apparently everytime he opens any file based in "My Documents" it just closes it. He's also unable to access the internet and a bunch of various programs.

He says that when he ran a virus scan it scanned up untill "My Documents" and then closed itself.

He also cannot save any files or send/upload files.

Any advice?

The best solution we have so far is wipe the hard drive.

Cheers.

Alegis:
A bunch of various programs, including all antivirus programs you tried to install ?

Seems to be its one aimed at corrupting documents.
Anyways, try narrowing down the search on this page, or browse the 100 viruses it found; and acquire a specific removal tool (which will most likely work then):

http://search.symantec.com/custom/update/query.html?charset=utf-8&filter=vir&nh=10&hitsceil=100&st=1&context=gbh&qt=my+documents&x=0&y=0

download a virus by accident, it's so annoying isn't it? you managed to tune the firewall so perfectly strong (mine's only Windows Firewall, no anti-virus or anything) until you accidentally press the wrong button.

please tell me he has back up his computer.

Jenno:
Boot in safe mode and then run the virus scan. If it still dies in the middle of the scan, it'll be way less of a hassle to just wipe the hard drive.

McTaggart:
Kill processes in the task manager. If you find out what the process that's doing it is called there a fair chance you've got the filename. Find, delete, hope you win.
