Joy Division - Dead Souls

My second favorite Joy Division song, after Warsaw.

Surely Warsaw isn't technically BY Joy Division...

I'm listening to http://WOXY.com and I'm not sure whether or not this is old news, but if you haven't tried it before you really should 'cause it's awesome. It's an independent radio station out of the Cincinnati area that got sold and shut down for a while, and then was reborn with an internet-only broadcast. And they play good good stuff. You can also listen to it on iTunes radio, it's under alt/modern rock. I sound like a spammer, probably. Sorry.

At the moment they are playing Crosses by Zero 7. I have never heard it before. It's a pretty song.

Warsaw is a song by the punk band Warsaw, before they became Joy Division. I'm being pedantic for no reason. I didn't even get any pleasure out of it.

That is, of course, unless you are listening to a live version from when they toured as JD...

Except I don't particularly agree with it. Joy Division only released five songs as Warsaw, and the track was recorded after they changed their name, in the December '77 sessions, which sound rather dissimiliar to the Warsaw tracks. Since the track Warsaw - Warsaw doesn't exist, and it's in the Joy Division style, I would call it a Joy Division song.

I disagree. I think the song Warsaw sounds nothing like the Joy Division style. It's pretty much straight punk, it's not like you can compare to...say...Love Will Tear Us Apart, or Day Of The Lords.

If it has 'Sex And Drugs and Rock and Roll', 'Billericay Dicky', 'Reasons to be Cheerful' and 'There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards' on it, then yes, yes it is.

Actually, it just is anyway. Ian Dury is criminally under-rated.

And because I'm back on the track

Ian Dury and the Blockheads - There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards

Noel Coward was a charmer.
As a writer he was drama.
Velvet, jackets and pyjamas,
The gay divorce and other dramas.

There ain't half been some clever bastards
(Lucky bleeders, lucky bleeders)
There ain't half been some clever bas-tards.

Van Gough did some eyeball pleasers.
He must have been a pencil squeezer.
He didn't do the Mona Lisa,
That was an Italian geezer.

There ain't half been some clever bastards
(Lucky bleeders, lucky bleeders)
There ain't half been some clever bas-tards.

Einstein can't be classed as witless.
He claimed atoms were the littlest.
When you did a bit of splittemness,
Frighten everybody shitless.

There ain't half been some clever bastards.
Probably got help from their mum
(who had help from her mum).
There ain't half been some clever bastards.
Now that we've had some,
let's hope that there's lots more to come.

There ain't half been some clever bastards
(Lucky bleeders, lucky bleeders)
There ain't half been some clever bas-tards.

Okey-dokey!
Oh!
Segovia.
Da-laa la-laa da-daa da-lee
De dump di dump de dump-dump-diddle lum-lee.

There ain't half been some clever bastards
(Lucky bleeders, lucky bleeders)
There ain't half been some clever bastards
(Lucky bleeders, lucky bleeders)
There ain't half been some clever bastards
(Lucky bleeders, lucky bleeders)
There ain't half been some clever........

Strangely more so among rock fans than dance heads.  Spasticus Autisticus is one of those big Ibiza hits of yesteryear, back when that meant something that was a bit weird in a club setting...  On the first volume of the Disco Not Disco compilations.

Edit: I'm listening to the untitled closing track on the new Icy Demons album, Tears of A Clone.  A homemade keyboard plays the 'Chariots of Fire' theme before a single bass guitar note is plucked and a really leaden beat starts plodding away.  Then there's this weird chant "I can't find my pizza / Goddamn I'm heavy / I can't see my penis / Where the hell is Lisa? / Dreaming 'bout the cheese steaks / That they got in Philly / But I'm in Chicago / Goddamn I'm hungry" ... and on it goes... what the fuck is going on?  Makes me laugh out loud, so that's all good.

Actually, yeah, I can definitely see that.

What song was it that Ian Dury did on top of the pops? I remember his dance being amazing.

Still listening to Ian Dury.

Now it's Billaricay Dicky.

This talk of Hammerfall has inspired me to crack out one of my 'long live heavy metal' playlists.

And what song could start such a list but Dream Evil - The Book of Heavy Metal

"In life I have no religion.
Besides the heavy metal Gods.
With nothing but black skin-tight leather.
My skin is clad in metal studs.

Am I a wannabe?
Have I no dignity?
I gave up all my life to beeeeee....
IN THE BOOK OF HEAVY METAL!"

The longer this thread gets, the less discussion there is.  Talk about the music you're listening to!  Explain why you're listening to it!  Why you like it!  Why it ROCKS!!  Lest the thread go the way of the last "What I'm listening to" thread.

Skade - Ved det Sorte Kapel(At the Black Chapel)

This is my little hobby noise/ambient project. First thing I did was to think of a decent name and ended up with Skade which means a number of things. First it means injury but also more general, a car can have a skade for example as well as a certain species of birds. The ones that are attract to shiny things but whose english name temporarily escapes me. It is also the Danish name of a jætte(troll) in nordic mythology, who married Njord, god of the sea and stuff, but was unhappy. Because she prefered in the mountains where she came from, sort of like that babylonian queen. This particular "song"(soundscape is probably more apt) consists of a bell which is actually me hitting on a lamp with a screwdriver and then slowing it down muchly.
Then I have vocals in latin, saying "save me God" and machinegun fire from a tank as well as moaning courtesy of yours truly.
I am trying to convince myself that it could be worse ;)

"You're Pitiful" by Weird Al Yankovich.

It seems the release of Weird Al's new album is being held up because of issues with one of the artists whose song is to be featured. On a completely unrelated note, this single from the upcoming album is available to download from his site, for free.

EDIT: Oh yeah, discussion. It's very clever, especially the intro. To my mind, its one of Al's better parodies.

There's something different about Somewhere in Time compared to the rest of Maiden's stuff. It's cleaner sound and more soloish, compared to Powerslave, at least.  Not bad. I still like both Powerslave and Seventh Son.. better.

Regina Spektor, off of Rhapsody, based on suggestions elsewhere on this forum.  I'm impressed.  On the one hand, it's adult contemporary.  On the other, she has a robust jazz singer's voice, and does a creditable Billie Holiday on Lady.  Good work music!

Skyclad - Something to Cling To

This is the most marvellous songf ever. NO ARGUMENTS.

I'd have killed myself once without this song.

It certainly is a marvelous song.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Static

I'm debating whether or not to see these guys when they come here in August. I really like them, but do they put on a good show? Has anybody seen them? Positive? negative? Yes? No? Avoid it like the plague? I don't know.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

They would only be able to do, like, 3 songs a set.

And if one of them wasn't Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls, I'd shoot them.

They had better be careful if they come down the south of England.

Pop Will Eat Itself - Everything's Cool

These guys were awesome before they became crap.
