Faw:
Thanks for the input, and i do like me some lightning bolt.  It seems that the message here is that there's SO much seperation in the heavy music scene..... and if anyone suggested The Locust i was going to kill them through the internet.  Now i'm off to download mountain!

Yeah, I can't imagine anyone describing DEP that way...

They're all bands heavily influenced by hardcore and technical metal that came up in the same scene in the 90's.  They took those influences to different stylistic ends, but to say that they have absolutely nothing in common is willful ignorance.

Why wouldn't you separate Botch out as well?  They sound more like Converge and Coalesce than Dillinger.  Dillinger mostly differ on their tech metal approach to guitar.  Candiria are really the odd ones out on my list, and not because of their obvious jazz and rap influences.  Because their incorporation of rhythmic and percussive complexity into the hardcore aesthetic is, in my opinion, far more cohesive than any of those other bands' attempts.

Sure, the OP could find a more similar listening experience in the pale imitations of DEP that plague the Trustkill catalog, but I think the suggestions I made are a more relevant and worthwhile option.

Well i just think DEP has a much more experimental approach to hardcore, and not so much about the "let's be brutal and make ears bleed". Converge are an epic band, but to say that they have a similar sound to DEP? That's just plain wrong. I know they have mostly the same influences but the directions they put their music in is very different from each other. In DEP's newest album there's electronics, synth and clear vocals. Converge, Botch OR Coalesce doesn't use any of that. And i'm sure that's what this guy is looking for. And the reason why i seperated Botch from the others was that i haven't heard much of them.

But for sheer recomendation, those bands are fucking awesome but they don't sound similar to DEP.

SpacemanSpiff:
I can't speak for Coalesce or Converge as I don't much of their discography, but Botch does indeed use these elements (you might want to check out We Are The Romans for reference). But yeah, they still sound different.

I'm not talking about anything post Calculating Infinity.  And I don't think Dillinger has done anything really out there in light of earlier tech metal, but they sure put a lot of energy into it.  I could see making a general distinction in terms of approach to guitar, but I think all of those bands exhibit similar inclinations in rhythmic construction, abrasive aesthetic, etc.  Hell, during that period between vocalists, one of DEP's fill-ins was the vocalist from Coalesce.

daddsy:
one of the poison the well albums is very simular in style to dep, although the rest are nothing like them in the slightest. The fall of troy, but someone said that already, are slightly simular, but to be honest, the dillinger escape plan are pretty unique. also isis or cult of luna are ever so slightly simular, except more progy. they are as interesting though. im looking at the comparisons on last.fm, but seeing as that includes the mars volta, erm, best to ignore there list.
