Gryff:
You are not alone guys. I was 12 then!

Some of the people on this forum weren't born in the eighties. Now how old do you feel?

brandie:
Way to make things worse, Kiwi!  :-p

Thrillho:
The fact that some people on this forum weren't born in the eighties makes ME feel old, and I'm 17!

nuisance:
In 1994 I was 2 years older than you are now.  :|  I "win".

Edit: vaguely relevant stuff - having been into Pretty Hate Machine at school I was ... ok... with Broken (disappointed that a guy who was giving props to Prince and Public Enemy on his first album started taking a turn for the ... rock) and basically gave up when The Downward Spiral came along.  I did buy it, but I got pretty damn bored of it and sold it off.  The instrumental that rips off Bowie was nice and I quite liked the completely incongruous ending to Hurt and maybe Piggy..?  That the one where he just belts shit out of a drum kit completely out of time with the track at the end?  That was pretty exciting / hype compared to the supposedly rocking stuff.

In 1994 I was also listening to Consolidated, a really lame political activist hip-hop crew (on Canadian then-basically-industrial label Nettwerk, I think?) who did a song with The Yeastie Girls called 'You Suck'.  Sample lyric: "I know you think it's a real drag / To suck my cunt when I'm on the rag" Whenever I hear Peaches I just think of that one track extended into an entire one-trick career.

Meanwhile, Bauhaus had come and gone well before I started listening to them and I still find they have lasting appeal.  The depth of influence is there and a good dose of wit, neither of which are evident with good old Trent, IMO.  I'm not a huge fan but if I hear something like 'She's In Parties' or even think about Peter Murphy shouting about fish cakes I get pretty excited.  And a weird paean to a horror movie actor over what's essentially a reggae riddim is a pretty fine thing indeed.

Sorry, that's more than enough...

KharBevNor:
One of the things that made me stop editing Wikipedia was when I added a mention of the influence of reggae on Goth Rock, and basically got screamed at. Bauhaus and Alien Sex Fiend both went as far to actually do dub remixes of several of their songs.

Oh, and of course wit. I love it that some people STILL haven't figured out that what goth mainly is, is a joke. It's always been to a large extent self-parody, mixed in with its more serious elements. Goth is what happened when post-punk and no wave got so damn heavy you couldn't help but laugh and do something ridiculous with your hair. Every good goth band consciously or unconsciously understands this. This is what makes it something to be enjoyed. Stop crying! Start drinking absinthe and having long discussions about Byron. And goth is, in my opinion, just some of the most absolutely enjoyable music in the world.
