It's not just the cover, it's the way it opens too.

I can't believe we've got to page 2 and nobody's mentioned Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company (that's Janis Joplin's band before she went solo, for those of you wondering).  I'm embarassed for myself as much as I am for anyone else.  I mean sure it's the obvious choice, but come on people!  Robert Crumb!

That cover shot looks beautiful!  I don't like their music at all, but would love to see more of their art.

KharBevNor - anything that looks vaguely prog or metal gets a pretty much automatic thumbs down from me.  I thought all those covers you linked to looked rubbish.  Just not to my taste at all, although I quite like the squiggly pen styles of the Limp Bizkit cover, despite the shit content...

Anything with Gothic looking lettering, whether it's Snoop or Twilight, also gets the thumbs down.

Why?

Mostly it just comes down to associations of images with what I consider to be bad music.

If you're meaning about Gothic fonts, I've always found them ugly, even when I was in primary school and I was reading the Germans' speech in Asterix comics, I remember not liking the look! :)  On album art I guess they connote attempts at looking evil, menacing or somehow arch, none of which resonates with me in the slightest, nor tickles my brain either.

From what I've read I think we're almost diametrically opposed, taste-wise.  :)

With those King Crimson albums though...what's 'proggy' about them? They could be for any band. Not to mention that loads of albums that aren't metal or prog bear similiar things.

I'm going to un-nominate the Porcupine Tree cover, because Deadwing pales in comparison to its predecessor both musically and visually. I remember the first time I looked through the album art of Deadwing, I was pretty disgusted. Normally, when it comes to album art, I either like it or I don't care, but I felt a strong distaste for that album.

Now for one I do like, Popul Vuh's Einsjager & Siebenjager:

Yeah, fair call, my knowledge of whose music they're representing probably colours my opinions.  I can explain what I don't like about each one, but not sure what the point is?

Semi-coincidentally had some friend recommend I check out the art of Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))))))))))), Southern Lord records) and was surprised that it's packed full of wireframe type geometric shapes, sans-serif fonts, super-saturated photos.. all the hallmarks of 90s electronica..  There was some Earth gatefold LP with beautiful close-ups of flower beds!

I don't think covers necessarily have to represent a certain style at all.

That said, I absolutely adore a proper, overall use of the black metal aesthetic. Particularly the old unreadable logo and grim photo combo.

Not to be an ass when such a newbie...but I really didn't see the point of links.  yeah, it's killer for dial up (does anyone have that anymore?) but it pretty much tripled the amount of time it took to get through the thread, just to realize most people were only posting metal covers.

Autechre - Ep5

I couldn't get a decent angle on it, but it's just black matt plastic with "autechre" engraved on the front and "ae" on engraved on the back. I thought it was pretty neat.

You know, I am reflecting here that one of the central arguments of vinyl lovers is entirely correct. I mean, look at this:

Doesn't seem like much, but I've got a version on a red vinyl 7" and it looks great. Which also brings me to the totality of the package as well. Someone needs to invent the CD equivalent of vinyl engravings.

^^^ I don't know what is going on with my Autechre cd, but the boxed looks seriously warped and out of proportion. It doesn't look straight. Gosh darn my camera skillz.

What can I say...Autechre has *really* good album covers.

Also, Disconnected by Funkstorung has fantastic production...a heavy-gauge embossed plastic sleeve over an embossed jewel case, with day-glo print all over.  Pictures cannot do it justice.

Despite the fact a lot of them are pretty badly drawn, there is something awesome about Scientist covers.

Hmmm...Have to include Mr. McKean. a pile of which can be seen here:

http://www.dreamline.nu/cdcovers/

And what the heck, I'll add this. Why?  Cause I did it (art) with the lead singer (typography and fudgings) and it's the closest I'll ever get to a "metal" sort of image.  There are so many things wrong with it, but it's out and the first major I did.  Call me biased.
