Phoenix shouldn't count. Since it's a phoenix.

Wow, really old thread...

Artistically, I wouldn't say they are amazing, but they are at least capable. Not as much can be said for many bands
people call artistic geniuses.

Huh?  I'm not quite seeing the link between an American prog sludge band and an English power metal band.  Aside from the fact
they both inhabit the same huge genre of metal, I don't see how any comparison is useful.
P.S. Hopefully, you were  joking and I look like a fool now for taking it seriously.

Unless, of course, you were just saying they are both currently trendy "heavy" bands for two very different demographics, in
which case  you are very correct.

Dragonforce are absolutely hilarious in a good way. They aren't a metal band that takes themselves seriously and this is evident if you : a.) listen to their music b.) witness their live performance which are absolutely entertaining if not completely ridiculous in a Monty Python meets power metal meets Spinal Tap kind of way! haha

When I saw them live they had fake tattoo sleeves on their arms and beer holder things on their mic stands. Oh, and did I mention they have trampolines on stage that the guitarists jump on while soloing at 300 notes per second?

I'm somewhat torn when it comes to this band because while they are fun and entertaining for someone who isn't really familiar or that are basically new to the genre of power/classic heavy metal (which consists of much of their fan base...there were skads of 15 year olds at the show I went to...), they sort of give power metal a bad name to those who aren't familiar with the genre who just write the entire genre off as more "metal nonsense". There are amazing bands within the power metal genre, and I'm happy to see that someone mentioned Kamelot because IMO they are probably one of the best. :)

Other's of note are (and keep in mind that these aren't necessarily purely power metal bands but similiar in sound):

- Evergrey
- Savatage
- Stratovarius (except the last couple of horrible records)
- Symphony X
- Blind Guardian
- At Vance
- Ayreon
- Masterplan
- Helloween
- Threshold

etc. :)

No way! America ruled! :D

Dimmukane:
I didn't even think Herman/Sam was that good, technically, either.  But that's just me.  I've gotten really tired of cheesy power metal as of late.  They're fun and all, but I'm just tired of all these bands with keyboards and Christopher Lee voice recordings and general instrumental wankery.  I know a guy in Utah, the most metal show they get out there is apparently Blind Guardian.  He saw As I Lay Dying in an Express store trying to buy jeans :P.
