I was going to mention the Civilisation games, but then I saw that you want stuff that "won't be so completely addicting so that I never get anything else done", so… never mind.

I'm still pissed off my computer can't run Civ 4.

I third the vote for Grim Fandango... It's an awesome game, but be warned,  I haven't gotten it to run on anything higher than windows 98SE. (YMMV)

Also, if you like Grim Fandango, you may want to check out the whole Monkey Island series.  It has the same off-color humor as GF, and as an advantage, it runs under ScummVM, so you can run it on any computer... so long as there's a build available.

Mine can run it, but when civs start growing to the point of covering the whole map, then it becomes a bit of a problem.

(By the way, just tried Sevomod 3.0! Pretty slick so far.)

Took me ages to beat that game on Monarch difficulty.  Then I was all, "but what have I won?"  And I realized that I had won nothing.

Fucking game.
