other favorites would be Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, Steve Niles & Ben Templesmith's vampire stories, Watchmen and From Hell.

Alchemist:
To avoid the innumerable references to the works of Gaiman and Moore (of which I consider myself a huge fan), I will instead direct the reader's attention to Blankets.  A coming-of-age story set against a background of strict Christian upbringing as well as a story of neo-adolescent love.  Very beautifully written, with characters that stay with you for months.
