Ok, so I guess that they have announced that they are going into pre-production for this early 2007, and that they have signed up Heath Ledger to play the Joker.  After some initial shock I think that Ledger might actually be able to pull it off ok.  Being Australian he is at least partially mad already, so there is that.  I can imagine his face giving a creepy smile and it working, so there's that also.

I still have my reservations, but I liked the first movie so I will wait and see how they handle things.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Damn, I wanted David Tennant for the Joker. He would have been awesome.

I always thought Jim Carrey, back in The Day, would have been an excellent Joker. He basically played the Riddler as the Joker.

I was suprised by the quality of Ledger's acting in Brokeback Mountain. Maybe he can do it again here.

But seriously. If Dennis Leary wasn't busy with Rescue Me...

I'm not going to say I'm disappointed at the choice, because the last time Nolan made a questionable decision in terms of something we're familiar with (IE: the Batmobile) it turned out to be awesome. So, we'll see, but...is it too much to ask that Mark Hamill dubs over Ledger's voice? Yeah, I thought so. *sigh.*

Oh, hell yes he would've.

My picks for the Joker included Crispin Glover and Mark Hamill. Heath Ledger? Out of frickin' nowhere.

I still say Nick Stahl would've been great as Joker. But I have faith in Nolan's casting choices

i'm going to wait and see how ledger does, because he hadn't even crossed my mind when thinking about people to play the Joker.

perhaps this is like a trend for nolan now! because he signed up one fairly pretty man (cillian murphy) to play a fairly ugly villain, and now he's going to keep up casting various unlikely pretty men as largely unattractive evil doers!

personally, i've never thought heath ledger was pretty. he always came off too hairy. but, i mean, i do like him! a knight's tale is aces and outrageously underappreciated! (how fantastic was that dance scene with david bowie's "golden years".)

I watched that this weekend. Big giant freakin' 'MEH'.

Return of the Joker is way better, even if the end is totally out there.

Are you serious? Phantasm is the best Batman movie ever made.

Maybe it's because I prefer, you know, depth to my superhero.

You may need to retrace your steps my friend. I believe you have mislaid your soul somewhere along the ways.

I don't know how else to explain it. That is one of my favorite films ever.

Maybe if the Phantasm weren't so contrived, convoluted, and downright stupid it would've been better. Or maybe if it were actually an origin story instead of a shitload of flashbacks showing Bruce Wayne to be a whiny bitch.

Return of the Joker has ten billion times more depth and cements the Joker as the single greatest and most evil villian that Batman has ever fought. The Joker in Phantasm was just a throwaway villian. Meh.
