does anyone out there better at google than I am know the horizontal sync frequency and vertical refresh rate of a Compaq Presario V5207NR Notebook?

They didn't help much.  I was able to get the resolution thing straightened out this morning though.

sudo apt-get install 915resolution did the trick.

Now the wireless is the issue.

Your wireless card is probably not offically supported by Ubuntu. In which case you will have to use a wrapper (in this case ndiswrapper) to load the windows drivers in ubuntu. Here is a good how to:

You will need the original windows drivers for the wireless card before you start. Also if you search the Ubuntu forums for "ndiswrapper wireless" you should find a bunch of topics that may help you.

That was sort of the problem, and still not it.  The version of ndiswrapper provided through Synaptic wasn't current enough, so I had to download the source and build it myself.

That got the driver working and the wireless card recognized, but I can't get it to connect.

Fucking broadcom chips.

Do you get any errors, or does it just not connect? If you havn't already tried, try configuring the wireless card manually using 'ifconfig'. I don't remember any of the arguments you have to use off hand, but you should be able to search the Ubuntu forums/google and find what you need quickly.

Broadcom chips can be very evil at times.

It is working now.  I reinstalled with the same driver from a different source and it is connecting just fine.

Weird.
