You just... like bands. Someone recomends a band and you get into them. You're not too futzed about genre, though you're either entering an indie phase and leaving a metal phase or leaving a metal phase and entering an indie phase. You get attached to bands, though.
Also (not looking at your profile) you're either an Aussie or know an Aussie, since TISM is pretty Aussie/viral through that Everybody Else Has Had More Sex cartoon

I prefer the term "elitist". Also, because I don't have an iPod (I prefer a decent sound quality hardware-wise and FLAC support), Winamp 2.x gets the job done without hogging RAM and there's no last.fm plug-in for that.

Well, I've heard of about half the bands, and actually heard even fewer, but sheerly based on the fact that you listed The Cancer Conspiracy, I can guess that you are totally awesome. Slint is cool as well.
